The Mentorship program at TVH

Group Thermote & Vanhalst (TVH) is a global organization that specializes in constructing and repairing forklift trucks. The organization’s expansion presents Paul Sanders, HR director at TVH, with a tough problem: TVH doesn’t have system to capture, store, and leverage employees’ knowledge. There is a massive inflow of young people who lack technical know-how, and specialized knowledge is lost when older employees leave the company.

In order to deal with this problem, Paul Sanders introduced a mentorship program. This program helps older employees transmit their knowledge and know-how to younger employees.
Paul realizes that the transition to the mentoring system has not gone smoothly when he gets a letter from Freddy Jacobs, One of his most respected employees. Freddy challenges him with the following:

“Lately we are doing nothing but explaining work process to the young guys. Our own work has to be put aside, and why? Moreover, the young guy at prepacking has never seen a forklift truck in his life, but he started oof in charge of three older people. We have worked together successfully for than 30 years, and I hope that you will deal correctly with this situation.”

After Paul finished reading the letter, he frowned. Experiencing workers were putting a lot of effort into teaching newcomers the tricks of the trade, but the older workers were now becoming upset because of the career opportunities given to the newcomers.
Paul Believes that insufficient transfer of knowledge is at the heart of many issues at TVH. How can he optimize his system to manage knowledge efficiently?

Questions

Application Case 15-1

...Melton then telephoned Ewing and asked who brought in the organizer. He repeatedly attempted to elicit this information, but Ewing said he did not know. Melton ended the conversation by telling Ewing to keep his ears and eyes open and to let him know if he heard anything. He also told him not to sign anything. (Melton is using cohesion E.G. THREATS to get the employees to do things his way e.g., continual quizzing for information, telling them not to talk to the union and don’t sign anything). On December 24, 1975, Larry Melton was terminated by the company (Melton fired! good job!), and he was replaced by Leo Nord (replaced Melton). At about this same time, the company announced that it was improving its sickness and health benefits program for employees, including a new benefit to cover maternity medical expenses for employees and their spouses (The company must feel threatened by the Union coming in. Why?). On January 30, 1976, the morning of the representational election, Leo Nord told Cecil Snow that if the union won the election, the employer would take the rent-free apartments away from the janitors' helpers and charge the head janitors for second bedroom in their apartments. (Use of cohesion to control workers e.g., unfair labor practices – to influence decision to Unionize. Is Nord any better than Melton or made out of the same mold? Why was Molten fired then, if these cohesive techniques are still being used?) On January 30, 1976, the union lost the......

Case-Study (Payroll Program)

...Case Study (Payroll Program) Ian Strayer Strayer University Professor Farzan Soroushi Cis 210 February21st, 2013 Abstract Building a payroll program for a large organization with offices spread across the United States has many changelings and most be done in a particular way. Thus having the right application architecture is important where the design is concerned, because the company has one large data center that each office connects to via a wide area network (WAN). Hence the appropriate architecture for this situation would have to consist of a WAN diagram to be used in management of this project, along with system documentation, and information technology architecture documents to provide a visual representation of the network. Wide area networks (WANs) cover a large, physical area. Many WANs cover entire buildings, cities, states, or regions. Thus the primary purpose of my WAN is to link together local area networks, of these other offices spread across the country Payroll Program * In this Payroll program the case study has been centered on having the proper application architecture that would be effective for the situation at hand. It would take into consideration where what equipment needs to be and where its physical location should be as to be effective for the organization. Thus an effective system would combine elements into an architecture, or design, that is flexible, cost-effective, technically sound, and able to support the information......

Mentorship

...of the mentor, within the context of the nursing profession. The placement area concerned is a 14 bedded acute elderly assessment ward, which caters for both male and female patients. Several students have been placed on our ward over the years, it is the mentors responsibility to provide students with appropriate support, guidance and supervision within the clinical environment, Myall 2008. One of the key issues that need to be considered in preparation for an effective learning environment would be making sure the student is aware of the situations that could arise on the ward, discussing typical events that could happen on a daily basis. clinical experience can be a stressful part of the nursing program, working in a unfamiliar area, working with difficult patients and the fear of making mistakes. Hutchinson (2003) believes that a teacher should aim to provide an environment in which learners feel safe to experiment, voice their concerns, identify their lack of knowledge and stretch their limits. One of the major factors affecting learning is the environment in which it takes place. It is the responsibility of professional staff to create and develop an environment conductive to learning (Price, 2004). This implies that the environment should be continually monitored to ensure it provides appropriate support and experience for students and responds to the changes that take place. The mentor could......

Case Application Living Large

...Case Application Living Large Case Application Living Large What growth strategy does Live Nation appear to be using? What competitive advantage do you think Live Nation has? It appears as though Live Nation may be using two kinds of growth strategies; Concentration, which focuses in its primary line of business (in this case the music industry), and “increasing the number of products and services offered or markets served in that primary business”(Robbins & Coulter, 2009), and horizontal integration by combining with competitors. In 2009, Live Nation announced they were merging with ticketmaster to “expand into a complimentary business” (Rapino, 2009). With the concentration growth strategy, Rapino is able to offer many products such as concert tickets, merchandise, videos, and albums when other companies only offer one or a couple of these products. Using the horizontal integration growth strategy Rapino is able to eliminate competition and keep profit inside the company. “The key to Live Nation’s growth strategy is the ability to connect to those millions of people who attend shows every year” (Robbins & Coulter, 2009). By keeping a database that includes contact information for every fan (or client) that Live Nation has ever had, Live Nation is able to “connect” fans to their artists with greater ease. By strengthening the artist to fan connection, the purchase of merchandise and tickets is easier and helps Live Nation to keep growing and profiting. ...

Human resource management consists of numerous activities. What areas were illustrated by Sam’s schedule on this particular day? There was a number of human resource management activities illustrated by Sam’s schedule on this particular day. The first was the management by objectives (MBO) program that Sam was worried about. This project had been in the works for over a year now, and needed to be implemented. The next HRM activity was supervisory training programs. Sam needed to think of ideas for these programs. It is an important role of HRM to keep their employees trained and up to speed with the job. Employee record keeping was the next issue. HRM has the responsibility to ensure that employee records are correct and easy to access with the program. Employee grievances were something that needed to be dealt with that day, as well. It is the job of HRM to make sure that the employees are happy and getting along. They need to keep employee satisfaction. An unhappy employee will not be beneficial to the company. Another issue that Sam had to deal with was the payroll. It is the job of human resources to make sure employees are getting paid correctly. The next HRM activity was the flood of applicants that came into the office in response to an advertisement in the paper. It is part of human resources duties to recruit,......

Why is it important to focus on motivating employees who survive a layoff? Most companies focus on layoff processes, but they should take more in consideration the layoff survivors who in fact experience more anxiety and tension. After the layoff, the survivors are the ones who “suffer” more. Their workload becomes heavy and as a result their stress levels are increased. It is important to focus on motivating the employees who survive a layoff because after that, they feel a lack of security on their job, due to the fact they don’t know when it will be their turn. Motivating surviving people reduces the negative feeling they experience during this layoff event, and the negative consequences. This is what company should do, if it wants to develop the organization......

Applications of Epidemiology-Case Study

...Applications of Epidemiology-A case study Analyze Good Health Hospital’s records and itemize recent nosocomial infections that occurred within the past year. In your report, categorize the different parameters (i.e. person, time, place and ethnicity and gender) used in the compilation of data into the information summative. Hypothetically, Good Health Hospital is assumed to have possessed nosocomial infections as in any real hospitals where patients seek admission for treatment. According to Center for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), and Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH), a healthcare associated infection (HAI) which is also known as nosocomial infection is an infection that a person gets while staying as a patient in a hospital or other health care facility (PADOH, 2008). Hence, it is clearly understood that patients always acquired nosocomial infections during the process of receiving health care services from health professionals in any hospital or healthcare setting. PADOH has also confirmed that HAIs are the primary contributors of most sicknesses and mortalities in the world. For example, in American hospitals alone, HAIs account for about 1.7 million infections causing 99,000 deaths each year. Therefore, based on the analysis of Good Health Hospital records, research had shown that a great number of recent nosocomial infections that had happened before were identified. Among the different kinds of nosocomial infections verified, few infection type......

... Case Application One Minerva Guzman, Kirsi-Marja Hayes, Tam Perkins, Shekinah Reubel HCS/514 November 17, 2014 Steve Kovak Case Application One Introduction Employee Motivation Motivating employees is not an easy job. Motivation is the level of desire you have to do something or the reasons why a person does something. A highly motivated person can learn just about anything with effort and hard work. Mostly established in the United States motivational theories are favored by way of North America. In other cultures theories equity, Maslow’s need hierarchy, and achievement need don’t work well. However, the want for stimulating work appears significant to all employees and Herzberg’s motivator essential factors may be widespread. Coming into an organization employees have different skills, needs, abilities, personalities, talents and interests. They have different views of what they think their employer has a right to expect of them and different expectations of their employers and differ widely in what they want from their jobs. Keeping Staff Motivated Google’s biggest challenge in keeping employees motivated is purpose and money. Once you take away the all you can eat, the on-site laundry, the biweekly massage, and the swimming pool and spa what is an employee left with. The perks are nice, but employees need purpose everyone doesn’t work for perks. With flexibility managers can make the most of motivation amongst today’s employees. What may work for one employee may not......

...Derrick Robinson-Pate May 25, 2015 MGT 300 Case Application 1. Keeping professionals excited about work that is routine and standardized and chaotic is a major challenge for Symantec’s managers. How could they use technical, human, and conceptual skills to maintain an environment that encourages innovations and professionalism? a. The main focus of the employees of Symantec is basically grounded on the technical side of things. They use their technical skills in order to design content and network security software for both consumers and different businesses. The content that is designed and created by Symantec reflects the harsh realities of today’s cyber threats, threats varying from different businesses to different government agencies. And although it is important to focus on the technical side of things, focusing on one task and not having any other tasks to perform could be deemed as being less encouraging for the employers to continue their work. Having a different variety of skills available for employers to use while working or performing tasks could be beneficial for Symantec. Using different skills such as human or conceptual skills, this allows the employees to communicate with different clients or any other sources and to also formulate or create new ideas. 2. What management roles would operations manager Patrick Fitzgerald be playing as he (a) had weekly security briefing conference calls with coworkers around the globe, (b) assessed the......

Chapter 2 Application Case

...Chapter 2 Application Cases An Accusation of Sexual Harassment in Pro Sports 1. Based on the lack of evidence and witnesses from this claim I believe that Ms. Brown Sanders did not have the basis for a sexual harassment suit. She stated that the sexual harassment went on for 2 years before she even filed a claim therefore, she condoned the actions to persist before her termination for “failure to fulfill professional responsibilities,” which also has little evidence to prove as well. 2. I personally do not think the jury made the right decision in regards to this specific sexual harassment case. There was absolutely no evidence or witnesses of any kind to prove or disprove either sides of the trial. Due to the lack of evidence I would have dismissed the case entirely until further evidence from either side could be presented. 3. The garden management should have provided some type of physical and very detailed proof of Ms. Browne Sander’s negligence within the workplace. Just simply stating that she, “failed to fulfill professional responsibilities” and that, “her performance had been subpar” was definitely not sufficient enough to defend against her allegations of sexual harassment. 4. First and foremost, I would be concerned on the overall internal and external reputation of the company. I would first make sure the companies employees are aware of the policies and programs that were set into place to show how claims of sexual harassment should be addressed......
