The Photographic Essay

...Rooney October 2, 2012 The Photographic Essay W.J.T Mitchell believes that “Photography is and is not a language; language also is and is not photography.” (Mitchell 510) That would lead one to question where do images end and words begin? Mitchell would answer with the word “ekpharisis” (Mitchell 509), meaning that words give a voice to the photo. Victor Burgin and Ronald Barth have opposing views as to how this occurs. Roland Barth would argue that those words are written or implied, and are put there by the author. Victor Burgin believes that the words are put to the image by the viewer as he examines the photo, and that the images and words will be seen and heard concurrently. In the end, it would be agreed by both, that a reader’s emotions and experiences will guide how they “read” the words of a photograph. Victor Burgin’s idea is that the photo is a “message without a code” (Mitchell 510), and the image and the word are two separate forms of communication. If there is no caption on a photograph, the viewer would inject their own wording based upon on their own life experiences. “A photo is invaded by language the moment it is looked at and becomes an almost relic of the event it portrays.”(Mitchell) A viewer looking at a photo will immediately have thoughts come to mind, and those thoughts become the words of the photo. Roland Barth believes that a photograph has its own language that coexists within it, and he calls this a “photographic paradox” (Mitchell 512). ......

...Magellanic Clouds (LMC). The next year, Henrietta reported in the Small Magellanic Clouds 843 new variables. In 1907, Edward Pickering announced plans to re-determine stellar magnitudes by photographic techniques. The photographic magnitudes of a group of stars near the north celestial pole were to act for other stars as standards of reference. Henrietta was selected to measure these magnitudes known as the ‘north polar sequence’. The results were published in the Annals of Harvard College Observatory in 1917. Leavitt also spent a lot of time measuring secondary stellar magnitudes, based on the north polar sequence. Henrietta Swan Leavitt died in 1921 at the age of fifty – three from cancer. Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s death was seen as a “near calamity” by her colleagues. One of Henrietta’s colleagues remembered her as “possessing the best mind at the Observatory”. Henrietta made monumental contributions to the advancement of astronomy. During the course of her work, Henrietta discovered 2,400 new variable stars and as well as four novae. Henrietta’s main research interest was photographic photometry --- the problem of determining the magnitude or brightness of a star from a photographic image. Henrietta spent a lot of time searching Harvard photographic plates for variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Leavitt also studied Algol - type eclipsing binaries and asteroids. She was also a member of the American Association of......

Kodak & Fujifilm

...Management Concepts February 1, 2013 Abstract Kodak and Fujifilm shared the market of photographic films, digital cameras, supplying various products for the photography sector, and medical imaging equipment. Over time both companies had to come up with new and improved products that would keep the consumers wants and needs satisfied. Both companies had their very own style of management, which allowed them to advance with the innovation of new and improved technology. Kodak, until recently was the leader in the photographic and film market, with Fujifilm trailing by just a small margin. When it comes to ethics and social responsibility the companies are for the most part on the same level, but have some differences. Adapting to the changing market conditions affected each company’s management differently in many ways, and affected the growth and innovation process for both companies. After researching both companies the determination that all companies should be diversified in some way, in order to keep up in the changing market and economy, is crucial for growth and success. Since 1879 the world of photographic business has been growing and expanding across the world. Some of the most commonly heard photographic industry names include Kodak and Fujifilm. The founder of Kodak, George Eastman, went to England to try to get a patent on his plate-coating machine in order to make the photographic process simpler for many different people(Brooke_Ball, 1994). The......

Taxation Assignment

... Part B Identify the essential issues in the Question There are a number of issues raised in this question related to Michael’s income. Michael, who is a train driver, was approached by NASA to join a team of other amateur photographers to photograph designated portions of the night sky. NASA also agrees to pay him $3,000 for the maintenance of his photographic equipments per year. As a result of joining NASA’s amateur photographers’ team and strong following on his own website, people started requesting him to teach them photographic techniques. Michael charged people who attended his photographic technique classes. He earned $8,400 in total. The main issue being raised here is that are those amounts of $3,000 and $8,400 received by Michael assessable income or not? Identify the relevant law i.e. relevant legislation provision and cases Since there are two payments Michael received apart from his salary. The first amount of $3,000 Michael received from NASA was for the maintenance of his photographic equipments. The second amount of $8,400 was earned from his photographic technique classes. The payments are to be considered separately because of their different natures. To determine the first amount of $3,000 given to him by NASA was a assessable income or not. Also another important consideration to make is whether the payment is ordinary income or not. There are many relevant laws and cases that deal with the issue of whether the......

...dry photographic plates, which later lead to the idea of a convenient, simple to use camera that would become known as the Kodak. After the Kodak camera was introduced in 1888, the young company quickly grew. Eastman was big on advertising in newspapers, and periodicals, and he even made up his own phrase for the company, “You press the button, we do the rest” (History of, 2013). By 1897, Eastman Kodak was being advertised all over the world and would eventually become a major corporation. In 2012, Eastman Kodak filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, and had to start a re-organization which changed much of the way that Eastman Kodak conducts commercial business (History of, 2013). Fujifilm Fujifilm was established in 1934 in Japan. The company was started based on a Government idea to become involved in the photographic film manufacturing industry (History, 2013). One month after Fujifilm was started it began producing photographic film, photographic print paper, dry plates, and other photosensitive material (History, 2013). From the time Fujifilm was established in 1934 to the present day, the corporation has branched off into many countries around the world. Throughout the decades Fujifilm has transitioned from not only manufacturing photographic film, but also manufacturing products and doing research in the medical, scientific, and cosmetic industries. Fujifilm is now known as Fujifilm Holdings Corporation and is considered to be the largest photographic......

Kodak Versus Fujifilm

...George Eastman, the founder of Kodak wanted to make taking pictures easier and make it available to everyone. In 1883, Eastman revealed in grandeur, the invention of photographic film in roll. Five years later in 1888, with the slogan “you press the button, we do the rest”, George Eastman introduced the first Kodak camera to the consumer market. The cameras came preloaded with sufficient film for 100 exposures. He made a cumbersome and complicated process easy to use and accessible to nearly everyone and thus gave birth to snapshot photography. Eastman established his business on the principles of mass production at low cost, international distribution, extensive advertising and a focus on the customer. In 1889 Eastman and his research chemist perfected and introduced the first commercial transparent roll film, as a result, Thomas Edison developed the motion camera in 1891. A few years later Kodak marketed the Folding Pocket KODAK Camera, currently considered as the ancestor of all modern roll film cameras. By the time the 20th century rolled around, Kodak accounted for 90% of film and 85% of camera sales in America. Then, the evolution began and digital photography replaced photographic film and smartphones replaced cameras. As a result of the evolution, Kodak consequently experienced a decline in sale of photographic film, because of its slowness in transitioning and adapting to the change; in spite of the fact that they invented the core technology used in current......

Photographic Memory

...Photographic Memory It is not possible to have photographic memory, according to growing evidence it is impossible to recall images with perfect accuracy. There are some people that do have extraordinary memories like for example; Akira Haraguchi, at age 59, recited from memory the first 83,431 decimal places of pi. He is currently the record holder for the most remembered pi digits in the least amount of time studied. There are people that have Herculean memories, this means that they have skills memorizing a specific task, but can be incompetent recognizing someone’s face for example. Alan Searleman, a professor of psychology at St. Lawrence University in New York, says that the closest to having a photographic memory is having an eidetic memory. Eidetikers are persons who can vividly describe an image, for example they can scan a picture of a garden for 30 seconds and say how many petals are in the garden, but sometimes they forget after just a few minutes or they are not accurate enough. With this Searleman says that if they have photographic memory, they would not have any errors at all. Studies have also found that eidetikers are born, not made. You can improve your memory by practicing or learning tricks to remember things. And Searleman also found out that children tend to have more eidetic memory than adults, but once they start growing up they begin losing that ability, most of it at age six when they learn to process information more abstractly.......

...affected. Further analysis shows that the photographic key on the black and white photograph is low. In terms of lighting, the photographer has successfully used the elements of light and shadow to create balance in the photograph. The balance is consistent with the photographic principle of balance as described in earlier reading (Freeman, 2007). In the photograph, light is used to reveal selected parts. Similarly, the shadow is used to cover certain parts of the photograph that the photographer does not seem to reveal. This way, light and shadow are successfully used to represent the symbolism that is indicated by the title of the photograph. Eggleston’s photograph: "Memphis, C. 1969–1970" Hue, saturation and brightness are the main properties of color used as in the photograph. First, color hue is used to describe different components of the environment from which the photo is taken. Secondly, saturation is used to present different color intensities that define the photograph. Finally, the property of brightness is applied to describe the levels of the color intensities that give the photograph it reality. Moreover, the photograph presents a dull relationship between the colors used. This is aided by a slight contrast between colors in the environment and the clothing of the person in the photograph. The photograph also shows that there is an optimal use of the elements of color to create a good photographic balance. The use of dull colors......

Then George Eastman went out and purchased a photographic outfit with all the paraphernalia of the wet plate days. This was his first endeavor into the photographic world. He also purchased a tent where he could develop the pictures from his trip as he was taking them. George never made his trip to Santo Domingo, instead he became very interested in photography and he experiment ways in order to make the process simple. George began to make his own gelatin emulsions from a formula he had gotten from the British magazine. ...Kodak and Fujifilm David Ingle BUS 302 November 3, 2014 Troy Hudgins Kodak and Fujifilm There have been two major players in the photographic film industry since the early twentieth century, Kodak and Fujifilm. This writing will look at the history of each company and what their respective core business is. This writing will also compare and contrast the management style of each company to embrace innovation. Management’s approach to ethics and social responsibility is important to look at when comparing companies because of the potential affect on profitability. Finally, this writing will discuss the extent to which management of both companies has been able to adapt to market changes, as well as recommend three ways any company should build flexibility into its decision-making process to make adaptation to market changes smoother. History of Kodak Kodak began its journey in 1878 when, a man by the name of George Eastman, demonstrated the convenience of dry plates for photography. One year later, in 1879, Eastman was the first person to invent a machine allowing for the mass-production of dry plates. Ten years after George Eastman demonstrates the convenience of dry plates over the wet plates used during his time, the name Kodak is born and the company placed the Kodak camera on the market. ...earlier examinations of the unique properties of photographic articulation, interpretation and use, employing the inherent ambiguities of photographic imagery. Responses to ethnographic photographs of a rural farm community were recorded during group interview sessions and analyzed in relation to additional ethnographic data gathered in order to study sociocultural continuity and change across generations in farm families. Discussions of photography in the emergent traditions of visual sociology and anthropology have been concerned with two principal areas: the use of still photographs as a methodological tool in social research, and the use of photographs as a means of presenting social research. The use of still photography as a research method has been fruitfully addressed by a number of scholars (see in particular Bateson & Mead, 1942; Becker, 1974; Byers, 1964; Caldarola, 1985; Collier, 1967; and Wagner, 1979). 1 Using pictures in social research requires a theory of how pictures get used by both picture makers and viewers. In order to use photographs either as data or as data generators we need to have some notion of how viewers treat and understand photographic images, whether those viewers are informants or researchers. Ruby (1973, 1976) has drawn attention to the pitfalls awaiting people who take up photography as a research tool with too little awareness of the social practices surrounding photographic production and use.
