Devine Possibilities I remember having dreams as a child to grow up, go to college, and obtain my Bachelors, Masters, and PhD. Things do not always go as we plan, but I am in the Master’s program now aiming for higher heights. To be a great leader, you have to equip yourself with the necessary tools and be able to visualize possibilities. A vision is something you can see (Baker & Orton, 2010). My leadership vision is to help transform patient care to higher heights by leading by example, being supportive, building trustworthy relationships, and treating patients and staff with dignity and respect. This paper will examine my vision.
Vision
Leaders have to possess “soft skills” which are interpersonal skills or people skills. Developing these skills are not always easy (Sherman & Pross, 2010). In order to help transform patient care, the staff needs to see that their leader does not just talk, but can walk the walk. When the staff witnesses a leader doing and not just supervising, they respect them more. With respect comes trust, and when ideas are brought to the table, the staff will be more receptive to new ideas (Curtis & O'Connell, 2011). I would encourage my staff to participate and share their ideas, because providing quality healthcare is a collaborative effort. Effective leadership involves influencing attitudes, beliefs, behaviours, and the feelings of other people (Curtis, De Vries, & Fintan, 2011). Involving the staff in this collaborative effort to increase patient satisfaction provides a sense of empowerment. Empowering the staff reduces resistance to change and encourages staff to ask questions and make decisions (Curtis & O'Connell, 2011). The whistleblower also needs to weigh the responsibility to the public’s best interest versus his loyalties to his company and his colleagues. The codes of ethics stresses the responsibility to the public outweighs their allegiance (Beauchamp & Bowie, 1997, pg 328). Another conflict is personal in nature. The core of our loyalties lies with our family, and to some extension, the company that provides employment. We are loyal to our colleagues since we often spend more time with them then our own families. The telephone booth which symbolizes egocentrism and opportunism clearly demonstrates the theme. The sole purpose of the telephone booth in the context of the film is to facilitate attempts at personal gain, which jeopardize the well-being of the community, Tullymore, and culminate in Lizzie Quinn’s death. Furthermore, the chicken dinner more extensively signifies the sharing of wealth under different motives which establishes the theme. In the first circumstance, Jackie, his wife Annie, and his friend Michael are inspired by lust for riches which leads to moral insecurity. Most poignantly, at the climax of the film, the church serves as the embodiment of the theme.
