The Honorable Mayor Michael Nutter
Office of the Mayor
Room 215 City Hall
Philadelphia, PA 19107

Dear Mayor Nutter

The Public Act No. 11-52, “An Act Mandating Employers Provide Sick Leave to Employees”, that you vetoed, is of paramount interest to me because I am a Disabled Veteran. This issue directly impacts myself and fellow disabled American Veterans in the workforce. It was your final decision to veto the Bill. I understand your reason for doing so, but please allow my point of view to be heard.
Your reason in the veto letter was that the “burden businesses would face in meeting the requirements of this bill would deter job creation and decrease the competitiveness of our city at a time when we can ill afford it”. On the contrary Your Honor, I believe that passing this bill would increase the city’s competitiveness by drastically boosting morale in the workforce. In my opinion, it would create even more jobs, as passing the Bill would reduce workplace hostility in the event of an employee placed in an unexpected medical situation. I am a Disabled Combat Veteran. I am still obligated to provide for my family as well as myself and the passing of this Bill would support veterans, like me, similar to the way we supported our Nation in time of need.
Although I have read reports online, of your decision to veto this Bill, I understand that I am not in your position to fully understand your decision. Therefore, I do look forward to your reply expressing your opinions, and your current stance on this issue. Thank you, in advance, for taking time out of your schedule to consider my viewpoint on this matter. I believe it is a critical issue and would like to see the legislation pass this Bill to ensure workplace morale and job security for all employees in the City of Philadelphia.

...Mic Check, One-Two Suzanne Fields, the author of “Bad Raps: Music Rebels Revel in Their Thug Life” wrote her article on May 21, 2001 for insight on the news. In her article, Fields talks about how rap music has negative effects on our younger generation. She personally believes that the lyrics in these songs have a harsh effect on our youth and that it is the worst genre of music out right now. While reading, I found her opinion to be extremely biased and unfair. I also found myself disagreeing with almost every bad thing she stated about the rap genre since many other genres can have the same types of effects on younger people when they listen to them. Fields starts out her article by saying that rap music “expresses the worst kind of images” and is harmful to our younger generations. She thinks that the lyrics “employ vulgar street idioms” and are too harsh. She also states that she believes their lyrics come from “a world of broken families, absent fathers, illegitimate children and matriarchal dominance, often subsidized by welfare.” (Fields) Fields continues her argument against rap music by saying that the reason for the harsh lyrics is because language and experience of poetry and romance are absent from the lives of the rappers and their audiences. Fields personally does not know the true lives of the rappers, so she shouldn't be judging them just off of their lyrical content. Fields continues her article against rap music by using a couple facts about other......

University Composition and Communication I

...UNIVERSITY COMPOSITION AND COMMUNICATION I New or Used Car My daughter just got her driver’s license when she turned 18 years old now that she’s going to college and she is working a part time job, we are looking into different options of buying her either a new car or used car. We want to find the best car for her. Some of the factors we are considering are gas mileage, car repair bills, the reputation of the different dealerships, and would she be better off in a new car or a used car. We have fights everyday over to the use of my truck, if we were to get her a car of her own there would be no more fights. Regardless of what option we choose, new or used, it would still be new to her and she will be very happy about getting it. When she’s driving back and forth to school she is putting a lot of miles on a car. She has to go to school about twice a day for a short period of time. When she’s working, that’s not as bad as its, less than 2 minutes from our home. So on a normal day she starts outgoing to school, back home, where she does homework for about an hour, and then to work for 2 hours. After she’s done working she comes home and gets ready to go back to school for two more hours. With all the driving she does, we want to make sure she gets a car with good fuel performance. That way she’s not using all of her pay check to pay for gas. I don’t want her to buy a car and have to invest hundreds to thousands of dollars into fixing the car due to how much she has to......

...Expectations of English Composition As I stumble through the door of my first English Composition class in college, I am baffled by my professor’s seemingly enormous expectations for my meager writing skills. My anxious mind anticipates the same question as I stare blankly at the white dry erase board; “Will my past knowledge of high school composition correlate with the academic rigors of college English Composition”. The curriculum of college English is far more demanding and time consuming than the simplicities of high school English. I am presented with great expectations to thrive in the pressures of writings essays and reading other authors’ pieces. My presumptions will lead to positive academic achievements in English composition as I absorb the significant impression of college writing skills. My past high school teachers valued student composition as simplistic and predictable. Writing about weekend ventures and family endeavors became very arduous and tedious as the topic always presented the identical situation, ‘Write an essay about your experiences of a fun family experience or weekend event.’ Therefore, my essays were based upon the same idea as other student’s writings, never exploring into the uncharted, creative world of thought provoking essays. Writing in high school became very dull because teachers expected each student composition to be based on the same topic. Teachers identified each student’s essay as monotonous and repetitive since it was based......

...When I take the time out to read an article in either a newspaper or magazine that seems to be unsubstantiated it makes me wonder. When I open the thought process of curiosity then it leads me to go in search of the truth. I look for information on whatever caught my attention as false or exaggerated in the article. Depending on what the story is determines how I approach where I will look for the related information at. I am still learning and discovering the best ways for me to approach research. I went to college many years ago fresh out of high school and attended a college on campus. I was able to go to the library there to get a lot of my research done. I was struggling with being a new found single Mom and I did not complete my degree at that time. Now this has always been one of my biggest regrets. I now look to the internet first example www.gogglechrome.com or www.bing.com to start my research on any particular subject. I still am I fan of the good old fashion library. I find I am struggling with all that is out there to do research. Narrowing down the search is still something I am working on. Now that I have been in the telecommunication industry for well over ten year I want an opportunity to move up with a company. I am looking to add much more to my resume under education then just High School diploma. So I have started back on the journey of higher learning again. It has been many years and a lot has changed. ...Karen D EN130.1.1 English Composition II Assignment 6_06 December 4, 2013 Compare Online Shopping with Traditional Shopping Online shopping and traditional shopping has as many similarities as differences. Online shopping allows you to shop from the comfort of your home as opposed to traditional shopping, whereas, you would have to leave home to shop. Although traditional shopping allows you to try on, touch, and test a product, online will allow that and even if it’s unsatisfactory, the consumer has to go through the motions to return and exchange. There is, however, more convenience with traditional shopping when it comes to payment for merchandise. With traditional shopping, the options are far more than online shopping. For example, you can pay with cash with traditional shopping with the event that you don’t have credit cards and such. Unlike with online shopping where you must pay with a form of cards. Furthermore, with online shopping, you have the convenience of shopping at a store that is not in your local area, though you would have to pay for shipping and handling, you still have the flexibility to shop at a far away store. As opposed to traditional shopping you would only have access to what’s there near your hometown. Another advantage is having a store that offers online shopping; it would allow you to buy items not normally found in the physical location. Also, if you are a person that doesn’t like a lot of crowds, then online shopping is the......

...Pincumbe Composition 5002 August 24, 2014 Final Preventing a cold can be as easy as listening to your body, while curing hiccups and insomnia might require using some unusual techniques. In this essay you will find helpful hints to help you rid a cold or hiccups and how to get some sleep at night. My experiences are based on old wives tales and tricks I have used on myself and I have proof that some of these tricks might work for others. Because I have not suffered a cold in many years, I thought I must be doing something right so I would like to share with you my regiment. Also, I will share what I have learned about how to cure hiccups and what my son and I have done to cure our hiccups. These tips are based mostly on old wives tale and tips from the “Help From Heloise” books by Eloise Bowles. Now my tips for curing insomnia are based on my experiences with the insomniac women in my family, who struggle to sleep at night or find themselves awoken from sleep in the wee hours of the morning. However, I do not have this problem of insomnia. So I became curious of the fact that these ladies were not sleeping at night only because I could not understand what they were going through. Sleep to me is like milk, “it does the body good” and I ensure I get the right amount of sleep. My tips to my family were based on my own sleeping rituals or from what I have read on WebMD. This essay is based on tips I have collected over the years, tips that I standby and I hope this...

Ritual Essay-English Composition

...reflection of one's life, which serves to confirm emotionally the reality of the loss, and bring closure to survivors. Funeral ritual do not just acknowledges an end of life but a life span as whole (both life that was lived and end of life). They offer the living (mourners) a possibility to assemble and remember the things that are relevant to them about the life of the person who died such as his or her accomplishments, friendship, guidance or love. Assembling for funeral ceremony is place for us to think about the moments we shared with the deceased and to share those memories with others. This is helpful to mourners the more we share such memories of the deceased this reconciles our grief. When my grandmother died, during her funeral, I met a man who told me how my grandmother took care of his needs when he lost his parents at the time he was in High school and my dad affirmed the man’s story. As a bereaved person of the family this man’s story gave me the awareness that my loved one (my grandmother) did not touch the lives of her immediate family only but people in her community as well. This gave me a big sense of relief that she lived a good life and if her life has come to end, we should not only be grieved but we should celebrate the positive impact she made in her community as well. To get over their grief, mourners need to acknowledge the reality of death not only on mental level, but on an emotional level as well. This is why before a traditional funeral an......

...Chico, “The economy also lags behind that of the state with lower income (regional per capita income $32,965 while for the state it is $43,647) in 2011, a higher unemployment rate, and a higher poverty rate.” (Jensen, 2014, p.4) In addition, between 2006 and 2014 the unemployment rate was at the lowest of 6.6% in 2006 and peaked at 16% in 2010 (retrieved from Shasta County Economic Forecast). There are no new large constructions under development or major corporations planning expansion here. The local shopping outlet is less than half full with stores. The airport use to house three airlines and is now down to one. With unemployment high, means no jobs and the county crime rate has increased significantly over the last couple of years. I believe the lower income paying wages play a big factor with crime, which will include people with drug addiction and less educated people in the county. The less educated factor is plays into the lower wages, as people with degrees are more apt to get their foot in the door for a higher paying job. As noted by Mr. Jensen in his economic report of June 2014 “in Shasta County only 19.7% of people over 25 years+ hold a bachelor’s degree vs. the California average of 30.2%.” Health facilities and access are a major concern in the county. The local community clinic no longer accepts new patients due to the capacity of providing services to their current clientele. If you live in the rural areas of the county and need emergency or trauma......

...their physical appearance. All of this leading to a loss of interpersonal social interaction. Negative Effects on Job Performance When there is a loss of interpersonal interaction, this has a waterfall effect that causes problems in other areas of a player’s life. In a study that was performed with participants that played EQ and felt that they were addicted, a participant talked about the effects on his job performance (Chappell 2006). He had not been in too work nor communicated with anyone since he was so engrossed in playing his MMORPG that his work had filed a police report. He meet the police at the door an informed them that he was not missing and handed them his office keys, company laptop and credit cards. In his words “I didn’t blink an eye” at doing this (Chappell 2006). After a month and losing his place to live he informed his system that he no longer had a job due to downsizing and asked if he could stay with her until he found new employment. While his sister worked he acted as if he was looking for a job by arranging his clothes to look like he had been out searching or at interviews. When he did get a response from an employer, from his resume that was posted online, he told them that he had already found a position and no longer needed one. Since this act he was playing for his sister’s benefit cut his play time down to 16-18 hours a day from 20 hours he was resentful towards her (Chappell 2006). ...Thomas Edison State Collage 2004-05-ENC-101-OL009: English Composition I Fast food, Gardening and Budgeting Money are activities that you can gain knowledge through participation, observation or both participation and observation. The question I would ask, “How do you know things?” I bet everyone ask that question sometime in their lives. I know, I have asked that question a few times. When I think back on how I learned to do a few things I know that I did and did not have the knowledge to do, but through participation, observation or both participation and observation I did gain knowledge. Like fast food, I can remember going to McDonalds with my family for a hamburger. I was very young and did not know what a hamburger was. I observed my brother eat his hamburger, taking a big bite and chow it down in two bites. My father had bought me a hamburger, wanting to be like my bother I took a big bite as he did. Almost immediately, I spit it out! I did not like the taste of the mustered on the burger. That is, when I discovered I did not like mustard. My father bought me another hamburger that was plain and I ate it all up. That day I gained my knowledge both by participation and observation, though the stronger of the to was by participation. Though observing my brother did teach me how to eat a hamburger in two bites. Something that I learned by observation was budgeting money. My mother used to pay all the bills in our family.
