Gender Inequality in “The Friday Everything Changed”

In the short story “The Friday Everything Changed”, Alma Niles, a girl who is well-liked among her peers is joined by many other girls such as Minnie Halliday and Doris Pomeroy to rise against tradition and decided to defy the rule: That getting water for the class was a boy's job. The story is trying to tell us that gender should never be something that should hold one back from doing what they can do. We arrived at the conclusion that the story is discussing about gender inequality because it is truly what the story is about. a little girl, Alma Niles, who decides that girls should be allowed to carry water to the school instead of just the boys doing. It’s sexist in the way that society's image of boys and men being stronger than females so they get to do the “hard” jobs. But Some people such as Alma Niles have the determination to want to be treated as equal as the boys. On that fateful Friday, Alma ask the teacher Miss Ralston “Why can't girls go for the water too? “Silence filled the room instead of a spark of uproar where everyone instead of just bursting out laughing at Alma right away. This act of righteousness triggers the boys in the class and they start to bully Alma but, the girls stood up to the boys and protected her. The following Monday, the bullying persisted as the boys did not allow the girls to play softball with them but, either way the girls had to wait for the boys to pick out who they want on their team and force the girls

Freaky Friday

...not see how hard that person’s life may actually be. In both Freaky Friday movies, the mother and daughter switch places and come to realize how each of their lives is no walk through the park. “A journey soon begins...its prize reflected in the other's eyes. When what you see is what you lack..then selfless love will change you back" this quote was stated by mother and daughter in both the original and in the remake. I believe that the 2003 remake surpassed the original 1976 film of Freaky Friday in three ways; theme, acting, and photography. In both the original and the remake, the theme was the same. The theme was that the mother and daughter switch roles to see that each of their lives isn’t as easy as they seem. The main idea in the original was clear, yet it wasn’t believable. There were instances in the movie that couldn’t possibly happen in real life such as, the police drove out of a cave during a car chase after the daughter and the car turned into a triangular shape and the car the daughter drove was in perfect shape. There were other unrealistic occurrences in the original film, such as when the daughter drove the car into the water and the car just stayed afloat. I’m sure the directors of the remake cut these scenes out entirely due to the improbability of a 13 year old driving and a car staying afloat in a sea of water. Acting is a major issue in any movie. The acting in the 2003 Freaky Friday surpassed the 1976 original version. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie......

Black Friday

...Karla Young Mr. Carter Macro Economics 28 November, 2011 Black Friday The Friday after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday,” a marketing and media phrase used to describe the shopping frenzy that occurs on that one day. Black Friday traditionally has signaled the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In examining the origin of the term “Black Friday,” the earliest known published newsletters which made reference to the term was in 1961. Rick Romell, a reporter with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, wrote that the term “Black Friday” got spun positive, remained little used for more than a decade and then exploded. This one day shopping blowout puts retailers “in the black” profit wise for the year. Bonnie Taylor-Blake, neuroscience researcher at the University of North Carolina suggests that the “Black Friday” tag originated with Police in Philadelphia, who each year faced massive headaches as fans in town for the Army-Navy game combined with swarms of holiday shoppers to create a traffic-clogging mess. The term spread outside of Philadelphia and really gained traction around 2004. The term has now become part of mainstream conversation and is in itself a “holiday.” The question-does a successful Black Friday boost the economy? Some market commentators argue that retail sales for Black Friday have a history of being greatly exaggerated. But even if the 16% increase over last year is accurate, can the US consumer maintain these elevated spending figures...

First Fridays

...First Friday People are everywhere! The streets are crawling with people, far too many for the sidewalks to hold. Everyone’s attention span is so weak. It seems every step there is something new drawing them in, far different from what they last saw. Never before have I seen such a vast assembly of odd and interesting things. First Friday is called an art walk, but it's more like an an art festival. It's held every first Friday of the month in Downtown Phoenix. For four blocks, the streets are lined with booths. The booths hold paintings, jewelry and every kind of art imaginable. No one booth is alike; each is just as different as its creator. The old bungalow houses that own these streets have been converted into art galleries by their live-in residents. For a few nights a month, these galleries are filled with one of a kind pieces of art. As you walk down the street, it’s hard not to be interrupted by a seemingly random performance. Four teenagers doing spoken word poetry in trance a small group of people, just as a man playing a violin draws in a few people to hear his instrument. These are small crowds compared to the tip-toeing people huddled around some of these acts. It reminds me of a schoolyard fight. Everyone is crowded around, jockeying for position. All I can see are the backs of people and bobbing heads, each trying to get a better look. I hear the boom and bass of hip-hop music coming from the center of one of these circles, so I decide to approach.......

Friday Night Lights

...Friday Night Lights Questions 1. For Brian Chavez, football does not play as large as a role in his life as it does for the other players. Chavez is very smart and works hard at school, therefore he plans to have a career from his education, not from football. Boobie Miles is relying on football as a career and does not perform in school, therefore football plays a very large role in his life as he is relying on football to make money as a career. The people of Odessa are similar to Boobie as they only care about football, not education. Football does not play a similar role in my community. Chavez will be much more prepared for life after football as he has a good education to fall back on, whereas Boobie has made his life revolve around football, therefore when it is finished he will have nothing. 2. They are making “unwitting sacrifices” for the people of Odessa and they are also the “strange and powerful god” to whom they were being sacrificed. 3. Conclusions can be drawn that there is not much going on and not much to do in the town of Odessa therefore the high school football team is everything to the town. My community back home in Australia does not put a lot of value into high school sports. 4. Labeling them as “the hearty, hair-trigger temperament of the place” gives us the view that they are very eccentric and passionate about their team and place and they are not afraid to be temperament about something they care about. Black Friday: the People and the Craze

...Black Friday: The People and the Craze Kevin Leonel Sonilal COM/156: University Composition and Communication March 16th, 2013 Professor Karen Nowak It is in our human nature to desire goods whether it is for necessity or luxury. Our appetite for shopping dates back hundreds of years to the bazaars and markets of old times. Over the years, our fascination with shopping has increased and evolved. There are more smart and sales-conscious shoppers. As a result, the markets and vendors have evolved in order to accommodate the evolved shopper. It has resulted in the creation of mass markets, industrialization, and cultural attitudes. With the increasing amount of shoppers, and countless markets and vendors, companies are competing to gain shopper interest; they invent new products, create persuasive advertising, and offer sales on current merchandise. For companies, their largest revenue gain comes around the holidays. Therefore, they make big pushes for consumer sales on those designated days. However, a large portion of their revenue comes from one non-holiday, the man-made holiday, Black Friday. On this day, consumers spend more time and money in preparation than they do on their goods. There is a significant change in their attitudes and behavior; they become more competitive and more aggressive. This single day affects both producers and consumers. The combination of aggressive shoppers, sales, and limited quantities can be a recipe for chaos and......

Black Friday

...Black Friday is the annual shopping holiday that occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving. It is mostly a shopping ritual to those people living in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Black Friday is a significant day to many retail stores because it is referred to as the start of the Christmas or holiday shopping season. The origin of the popular Black Friday dates back to before 1961, in Philadelphia, where it was formally used to describe the heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. It was always seen as extremely disruptive to the Philadelphia Police Department and always transpired on the day after Thanksgiving and thus the name Black Friday came about. As the years passed, an alternative reasoning for the title came to be known which denoted that retailers traditionally functioned at a financial loss recognized as, “in the red” from the months January to November. “Black Friday” therefore signifies the point at which retailers finally start to return a profit, “in the black”. Over the years more and more stores have begun opening at extremely early hours to help consumers get a jump-start on the sales. Some retailers have even started the trend of opening up at midnight. The Black Friday craze is tremendously popular, so popular in fact, that many incidents including violence has been seen in some cities in the past. We wanted to research if Black Friday should be considered a ritual. Our research process included secondary and primary sources. Our primary sources......

...Young at Art Museum in Davie so art surrounded me everywhere. Although, until I visited the very first First Friday held this fall, I never really experienced art so authentic and got to meet the people behind it. I went to First Friday with my roommate Kasey, not really sure what to expect but the second we got there, I was enthralled. The different exhibits, the vibrant people and even the exotic-looking food trucks reeled me in. I’m an aspiring photographer so when I go to exciting places like these, it’s inevitable that I stop to take a picture every five feet. I’m also really into vintage clothes so I was really obsessed with all the clothes in the stores there too. I absolutely loved the interpretive dances, installations and photography that I saw and I was able to add a lot more shots to my portfolio because I got some great ones there. My absolute favorite part about that night was a man we met named Jay Snodgrass who was inside sitting in one of the galleries with a fold-up table and an old type-writer. He was offering on-goers at First Friday poems on demand for free, but of course he accepted donations. Kasey and I both got one after he asked us about ourselves. He challenged us to not stop talking about ourselves as he wrote. The finished product made absolutely no sense to me but still, the aesthetic of it was the cherry on the top to my first, First Friday....

...Everything in the world is good to me. I like everything. I hope everything is great. Great is the definition of something. The definition of something is scary. Love is just a four letter word. To be in a relationship one must commit to someone love someone and be there for someone. I think that being in a relationship is great. Poems can say words that other people cant and sometimes I don’t have the words to say to someone so put it in a love song. My heart beats for you my heart loves you my heart help me to express things that I could not say on my own. A special world for you and me A special bond one cannot see It wraps us up in its cocoon And holds us fiercely in its womb. Its fingers spread like fine spun gold Gently nestling us to the fold Like silken thread it holds us fast Bonds like this are meant to last. And though at times a thread may break A new one forms in its wake To bind us closer and keep us strong In a special world, where we belong. - Sheelagh Lennon -My love, I have tried with all my being to grasp a form comparable to thine own, but nothing seems worthy; I know now why Shakespeare could not compare his love to a summer’s day.
