LASA 2: Exploring Personality Theories

Part I: Apply the personality theories to your personal life experience by answering the following questions. (Each paragraph below should be 200–400 words.)

1. The Five Factor Model of Personality: Explain where you fall on each of the five dimensions or traits in this theory. Discuss whether you feel you were “born with” this trait or if you feel this trait developed through experiences in your environment (such as family experiences or other learning experiences). Based on your experience, explain whether personality traits are primarily biological (innate) or environmental (learned) (Nature vs. Nurture). (1 paragraph)

The Five Factor’s I will be discussing are Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to experience. Starting with Extraversion, I think that this was a trait that I learned through experience. As far back as I can remember, I was very shy and reserved and to the best of my knowledge it’s not something I am sure of where it originated. I do know that through time and experience, I became an out-going and talkative person. My mother and father pushed me to do things on my own. There was a point where I would even order my own sub at subway. Through learning the satisfaction of being independent and being able to “talk for myself” I became assertive and talkative. Secondly, speaking of Agreeableness I believe I learned this trait. My father is a quiet, reserved and cold man. Although he is full of love, he strays away from confrontation and does not seem to act upset when he has hurt a person’s feelings. Thirdly, I think that Conscientiousness came with experience. I grew up in a household that was full of everything filed perfectly and everything had a “spot.” Fourth, I believe I was born with Neuroticism. Mental illnesses have been a gene passed down through…...

...Personal Responsibility GEN/200 August 9, 2012 Personal Responsibility Although many people do not stop to think what personal responsibility really truly means to them, they have never realized that living without it could not only jeopardize their way of life and career goals, but also their relationship with others. I like to believe that I live with personal responsibility every day just to live happily and to help me succeed in my goals. I have set goals in the past and achieved them using my experience as a female veteran and as an adult. It has been proven that if an individual does not have a grip on responsibilities, then they do not have a grip on self-esteem and self-worth (Morling, Rothbaum, & Rusk, 2009). When an individual that does not have personal responsibility, their personal life could really lack fulfillment and pleasure. An individual that is lacking personal responsibility cannot live to their full potential and have everything they have ever wanted on a mental and material level. If a person lacks a main aspect to live the right way, they cannot become satisfied with their life and are not doing anything to take charge of the problems that they have acquired along the way from incompetence. If there is a lack responsibility, then they do not have any confidence (Clouder, 2009). Confidence is a feeling that anyone should have about life as an adult. An individual might find it hard to take charge of their life the way they want to......

Gen Y

...Gen Y A SDSU associate professor Jean Twenge is concerned that Generation Y is becoming a narcissistic society. Social websites are increasing and the new trend Gen Y is doing is “self promoting”. Technology is becoming more advanced and Gen Y’s are more obsessed with their cell phones and I-pads rather than spending quality time with their families. Children prefer to watch popular shows such as “Sweet 16” and “Keeping up with the Kardashians” than the ABC news. Gen Y’s are too focused on the “self” and have lost their ability to live in a society that is not focused on the “self”. Online social websites such as Facebook, and YouTube are some of the highest rated websites. People are fascinated to either self promote or to gain self-confidence by watching other’s life style online. There is no boundaries sharing their information online and almost everything is about the self. People on YouTube advertise what they wear and what products they buy. YouTube gurus are trying to influence their viewers to gain self-esteem by looking a certain way. And in order to look confident you must by certain products. A college degree is not enough in a competitive work field because a certain image is now required. Twenge mentioned in her article that the competition is fierce. To get hired you must look and dress a certain way. Therefore, Gen Y’s are focused on the self and improving their self-ego and confidence to beat the competition. Everywhere we go we see people with some type......

...Money Management Korey A. White GEN/200 November 17, 2010 Abstract Managing money by putting a certain percentage of your income in categorized accounts gives you a better understanding of where your money is going. There are three account types I have chosen for this paper. Financial Independence Account, which is for retirement. The Fun Account, which is used to reward myself for working. Then there is the Life Expenses account used for everyday life activities and needs. Upon reading this paper you will have a clear understanding of how these accounts play a role in helping me manage my money. Money Management Managing my money is my day-to-day problem. When I was in the military, I did not have to worry about money management, because I lived on base and ate for free. So the only bills I had were my car payment and my cell phone bill. Because of those being the only bills I had, I was able to go out and splurge and buy whatever I wanted. Now that I am no longer in the military that way of living has stuck with me even though I have more responsibility and less money. After doing some research on how I can start managing my money, I have found three main ways to help me with money management. They are Financial Independence Account, Fun Account, and a Life Expenses Account. Although it is possible to manage money effectively, managing money is difficult when I spend it as fast as I receive it. Developing a Financial Independence Account will......

Our eyes began to open and shut, our head bobs up and down and we feel as though we can’t go anymore. This is definitely a sign that it’s time to get some rest. Sleep is a way our bodies rejuvenate itself after a long day or night. After reading this section on “Sleep”, I now have a better understanding of what my body goes through. I could never understand why some times when I would take long naps, I would feel more tired than before I went to sleep or why some nights I would wake up in the middle of the night and be super energized. Our bodies go through a cycle of four continuous stages and depending on what stage we are in, when we wake up, may determine how our body feels. I also found out that taking a 20 -30 minute nap or “cat nap” as some may call it, is better than taking a nap for a hour or longer. Waking up in Stage 3 or 4 is your deepest sleep, where your......

Gen X

...like to be slackers, they are not fortunate enough to have that luxury. During this generation, divorce was on the rise and many children born during this generation were raised by divorced parents. Due to this, they had to become self-sufficient at a young age, becoming “latch key kids”; they had to do many things for themselves. This generation had to make a way of their own with very little help from their Baby Boomer parents, or even society. According to the U.S Census Bureau, as of 2012 there were 49,197,918 Gen X’ers. Met-Life surveyed a total of 1,000 individuals born during this generation and found that slackers they are not. 75% of these individuals are working, with 65% working full time and 10% working part-time. Only 3% of the 1,000 surveyed did not complete their high school education. Their annual income varies depending on other factors but ranges from 36 thousand a year to 46 thousand on the low end of the scale. (Demographic profile America's Gen X, 2013) Another misconception I noticed while researching this topic is the ongoing accusations of selfishness. Thought of as a disaffected crowd with tattoos and piercings, they only care about themselves. This generation has taken on the responsibility of parenting their own kids, as well as bringing their elder (and sometimes ill) parents into the home to take care of them. According to an article posted in the Wall Street Journal dating as far back as 1996, it stated that 24% of people under the age of 32......

...Research Strategy Paper on the Lack of Self-Confidence GEN/200 Research Strategy Paper on the Lack of Self-Confidence Johnson Pope, an English poet, said, “Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.” However, I definitely do not have that quality. Self-confidence describes a person who has faith on themselves. A problem that affects me every day is my lack of self-confidence. My self-confidence affects me in my decision making, career, and social skills. It also affects me when I am passing up opportunities that can be rewarding. An example how my self-confidence affects me is when I will not stand a chance competing against another person. I do not do well in a challenge. I give in easily. I doubt about myself and my abilities to do any task. The fear of rejection and failure hunts me every day. My lack of self-confidence overly preoccupies me with what others think. What I need to do is build confidence and take charge of my life to overcome my problem. One of the methods I can use to work on my self-confidence is looking for a support group. They are a lot of internet support groups or blogs about self-confidence that I can rely for support. I feel that if I can share my feelings without face-to-face time, I can open up more to my feelings and assist me better. Another place that I can use to gather information is to see a Psychologist. Psychologists are trained individuals and with a tremendous amount of experience that can be use in......

...Personal Ethical Statement Corrie Robinson GEN/200 7/12/2014 LaTishia Wheaton MS/AJS Personal Ethical Statement My preferred ethical lens is results and reputation. People who have this lens are reported to listen to their intuition, and to determine the greater good for everyone’s character traits and virtues that will better serve the community. My blind spot is unrealistic role expectations. Meaning that I tend to not be accountable to those who depend on me as long as I have satisfied my own needs. This behavior leads to complacency, leaving problems unresolved in the long-term, and leaving people on their own fending for themselves. I also tend to rely too heavily on virtues associated with people’s roles in life forgetting that people are human and can make mistakes despite their role. According to my ethical lens, I show strength in free will and compassion. I contribute self-reliance and accountability to my environment. I am not afraid to pursue my passions. I also like to help and encourage the people that are around me to pursue their passion’s as well. According to my ethical lens, I also possess the ability to put myself in other people’s shoes and take an objective view of their personal lives and challenges while living my own life and fulfilling my personal responsibilities within my role. If I don not assure myself that everyone has free will, I run the risk of reducing my decisions off of narrow and financial......

...potentially able to start leading small business. From their developed work and experience, Gen Y are very confident and willing to work without instructions to follow. They will be the leaders for the next four decades; by giving Gen Y chances and opportunities, it will open more doors and more leading takes position. Generation Y is dominating the Canadian workplaces for the next decades; they will have to be motivated and cared while treated right from the present business world leaders. They will eventually learn and succeed, gaining the experienced and enlightened by the present leaders. As Millennials Graff stated, “I think Gen Y is an outstanding workforce”; “we just have to bend a little more to get the best out of them”. While on the other hand we have Generation X, who were the witness of their parents sacrifice to their company and also grown up with high expectations. To protect their self-esteem they coddled Millennials and given them awards for everything they did. Generation Y is not lazy but confidence. Gen Y questions to authority contrary to the previous generations who suffered in silence. “They will not tolerate being treated poorly, and that’s been seen as a lack of respect”, said Montalbano. Additionally, Gen Y "want leaders who are inspiring, genuine and authentic", which makes they impressed by competence but not traditional authorities or titles. While in collaboration work, Gen Y needs to know the reason and the meaning for their work, that causes......

Gen Y

...1) Recently, some marketers have noted that it is easier to develop communications programs to Generation X members than Generation Y. Briefly describe the characteristics of Gen X and Gen Y and whether or not you believe this to be true. There is some debate as to whether Gen X’ers (born between 1965-1978) or Gen Y’ers (1978 to 1986) is more easily targeted by marketers. Each of these groups has their own identifying characteristics. Generation X consumers are typically characterized as self-confident, yet distrustful of those of previous generations (and of marketing practices). They also tend to be less optimistic than their Gen Y counterparts. They are demanding consumers, less concerned with brand names and image and more concerned with quality. Gen Y consumers love to spend. They process information quickly, are quick to adopt new technologies and are more optimistic about the future. In the eyes of some, they are “shameless consumers”. Compared to Gen X they are less rooted in social mores, and buy because they like to do so. While marketers may argue that Gen X is hard to relate to and more cynical and skeptical than the Y’ers, once you have their trust, they will become loyal and remain so—making them an attractive segment. The key is getting their trust. On the other hand, reaching Gen Y is not as hard. They will buy based on wants rather than needs, focus on image and brands, and consume as a way of life. They are easier to reach given a proliferation of......
