Geothermal energy is created through power plants similar to the ones that burn coal. However, the heat that turns the water into steam to spin the turbines is derived from the magma in the earth’s mantle, and indirectly from the earth’s core. This is a pretty much renewable, emission free source of energy.
The more common way of harnessing the heat from the earth’s mantle is with Flash steam power plants. This is when plants drill down to natural reservoirs, pump cool water down, and pump the hot water up. The water that’s pumped up is way hotter than the boiling point of water (212°F). With Flash steam power plants, the water needs to be between 350° and 700°. When this water is given room to expand, it turns immediately into steam and spins a turbine.
Another type of power plant is the Dry steam. This power plant just pumps water down and, and steam up. This is the oldest and simplest design. Water for this design must be above 300°.
The last and latest design is the binary power plant. This can take water that is as low as 135°. When the water is pumped up, it goes through a heat exchanger, which transfers heat from the water to another substance with a lower boiling point, like butane. The second substance is then used to spin the turbine.
Some of the pros to geothermal energy is that it is pretty much completely reliable, completely renewable, is a steady source of energy, and doesn’t release a much smaller amount of harmful emissions than burning fossil fuels (only water vapor and a little CO2 and a very small bit of NOx). Some of the cons are that you can only use geothermal energy in areas where magma is closer to the earth’s crust, which means that certain places, for example the East coast of the US, don’t have very easy access to geothermal energy. Also, goethermal drilling may have caused earthquakes, although it hasn’t been proven. 1. Just a few feet underground, the water and soil stays at a temperature between 120° and 140° yearround, so if this gets tapped into, it can help heat offices or homes. 2. Reykjavik, Iceland, which heats 95 percent of its buildings using geothermal energy, is considered one of the cleanest cities in the world. http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/geothermal-energy1.htm 3. The most active geothermal resources are usually found along major plate boundaries where earthquakes and volcanoes are concentrated. Most of the geothermal activity in the world occurs in an area called the Ring of Fire. This area encircles the Pacific Ocean. 4. California had 36 geothermal power plants, which produced about 80% of U.S. geothermal electricity.
Nevada had 21 geothermal power plants, which produced about 16% of U.S. geothermal electricity.
Utah had two plants, and Hawaii, Idaho, and Oregon each had one geothermal plant. 5. Twenty four countries including the United States had geothermal power plants in 2010, which generated a total of about 63.9 billion kWh. http://www.eia.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=geothermal_home-basics-k.cfm A. I think we should expand on the use of geothermal energy, because it would create jobs and provide clean and renewable energy for many people. B. There isn’t very much pollution associated with geothermal plants, so the builders of the plant would probably be responsible for making sure not to pollute during the construction, and after, the planet could pretty much handle any emissions released. C. It would probably be best and easiest to educate people online, either through websites or by sending people emails about geothermal plants and how they would help their towns. D. The average person can help by being aware of the benefits and drawbacks to geothermal plants, and voting for them if one is proposed to their town.…...

Body Hair Removal Cream

...Body Hair Removal Cream NASC 121-001 Yimeng Wang These years, people are paying more attention on their appearances. Big evidence is that women tend to be more careful with body hair. The society nowadays has a value that it’s not polite for women to show their body hair in public. As a result, women have to shave before they go out. Since there’s the demand, many ways for shaving have been invented. The most common way is to use a razor. But since it’s a little complicated, and not that convenient to use, the body hair removal cream has been invented. I have been using this cream for couple of weeks. One thing I found interesting is that there is always a bold sentence on the product said that “don’t leave the product longer than 10 minutes”. I can’t help asking why? After checking the ingredient table on the product, I found out that the hair removal creams are mainly alkaline chemicals such as sodium calcium, titanium dioxide and calcium thioglycolate. These alkaline chemicals are used to dissolve the protein structure of the hair, which can make the hair easily be wiped off. Take keratin, as an example of the proteins in hair. The alkaline chemicals can destroy the chemical structure of keratin, and in that way weaken the root of your skin, which as a result makes the hair easily to fall off. Most of the time, there is always a wired smell in hair removal creams. That smell owes to the combination of calcium thioglycolate and sodium hydroxide. When the chemicals......

Keeping Hair Healthy

...Have you ever looked at your hair and thought "what in the world did i do wrong?" You just don't know what's wrong so you buy all sorts of hair products and it gets worse? Well I have a couple tips from what you should do to your hair to what you shouldn't even think about doing. First of all your hair doesn't only depend on what you put in your hair but what you put in your body. For example eating salmon, beans, eggs, and milk helps your hair grow healthy and gives it a natural shine after 6 months if you keep on eating these foods. You should also drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. Studies have shown that massaging your scalp helps blood flow through your head which makes your hair grow longer. You also need to take care of the outside of your hair. Make sure to stay away from heat! Straighteners, curlers, blow dryers etc. These will cause split ends and your hair to dry out. Make sure that if you do use these products to deep condition your hair a lot but not too much. Certain hair products are supposed to be really good for your hair follicles and helps rebuild them. Another important product you should stay away from is hair dye and bleaching your hair. These will completely dry out your hair and cause it to break. Try to use natural hair products as much as you can. For example putting coconut olive oil is one. However the best one is the natural oil that comes from your scalp. It's all natural but everyone produces...

Effects of Hair Die on Hair

...The Anatomy and Chemistry of Hair and Hair Dye Many different plant extracts were used for hair dye in Europe and Asia before the start of modern dyes. Indigo, known primarily as a fabric dye, could be combined with henna to make light brown to black shades of hair dye. An extract of the flowers of the chamomile plant was long used to lighten hair. The bark, leaves, or nutshells of many trees were used for hair dyes. Wood from the brazilwood tree yielded brown hair dyes. Another hair dye was derived from a tree similar to the Mulberry tree. Other dyes were produced from walnut leaves or nut husks. Some of these plant-derived dyes were mixed with metals, such as copper and iron, to produce more lasting or richer shades. Outside of the many colors that hair can be dyed, there are many different method used to color hair. Hair dye and the hair coloring process is a matter of chemistry. The first safe commercial hair color was created in 1909 by French chemist Eugene Schuller. He used the chemical Paraphenylenediamine. Hair coloring is the result of a series of chemical reactions between the molecules in hair, pigments, as well as peroxide and ammonia. The choice of which method to use will depend on the desired shade and longevity of the color. Temporary hair dye lasts for between one to three washes. This type of hair coloring involves no chemical reactions within the hair. Pigments are applied to the surface of the hair, without penetrating any further. These are easily......

Hair Research

... Abstract Hair and health have an existing relationship, yet little is known about the relationship between stylist hair care practices and encouragement of self-care in the African American community. The hair cosmetic industry has undergone a revolutionary change over the last two decades, dramatically veering from merely cleaning to repair, increasing the tensile strength, reducing oxidative damage, and stimulating growth. Unfortunately, the psychological and physical consequences of improper hair care by stylists have resulted in “hair stress” in the African American community (Winfield, 2008). The problem under investigation is what are physical and psychological processes of growing healthy African American hair, where people look good on the outside and feel good on the inside. This study utilizes a content analysis approach for using YouTube tutorials to support the “Growing Hands Theory” that encourages proper hair care practices related to physical and mental health for people of African descent. Core Concept Definition Healthy Hair Healthy hair is a result of hair care and self-care. Hair care varies from different hair types because all hair is not the same, but all hair benefits from individuals having appropriate nutrition, hydration, exercise, stress management, and restorative sleep. Strausfogel (2013), focuses on internal and external strategies for better hair growth. Many of these products that......

...There are few countries in the world that have benefited more from China’s rapid economic growth than Australia. The boom in exports Australia has enjoyed due to surging Chinese demand, especially for raw materials, is a key reason –perhaps the determining factor– why the country avoided a recession after the 2008 financial crisis. Trade with China is also spurring investment and creating jobs. But simultaneously, Australians are becoming uncomfortable about their growing relationship with China. They fret that the economy is becoming too dependent on China for its growth. They worry China will use its economic leverage to put political pressure on the country, or employ its growing economic power to become a strategic threat. They don’t much care for Chinese companies buying Australian assets. Australians worry that what helps their wallets hurts their country politically and strategically, and the more powerful China gets, the bigger that potential danger. Hugh White, head of the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University, explained the sentiment to me this way: “As China keeps growing strong enough to fulfill Australians’ economic aspirations, it grows more powerful and undermines U.S. primacy and our strategic aspirations. People are conscious that with the benefits we get from Chinese growth, there is a certain degree of vulnerability.” 这个世界上极少有国家能像澳大利亚那样从快速发展的中国获得如此多的利益。不断飙升的中国需求让澳大利亚的出口,特别是原材料出口,享受着长期的繁荣。这也是为什么这个国家在2008......

...Rolando and Rosa have been operating their own hair salon for the past six years. They have been very successful and now are interested in franchising their particular hair system throughout the United States. They are aware that the hair care industry is a $16 billion activity in this country. Rolando and Rosa specialize in hair care for women, men, and children, and believe they can provide their services on a profitable basis for other franchisees. Every franchisor and franchisee must keep a set of financial records. Too often the franchisor or franchisee is a beginner, opening a business for the first time, and is not fully aware of what it takes to run a business, particularly from the point of view of managing the finances. I can be a good example to this when I opened my first business about 10 years ago and how I was not prepared from the managing and finance aspect, which led me to sell the business. A franchisor or franchisee may see financial statements as complicated, technical documents prepared by professional accountants and understood only by loan officers. The prevailing attitude may be that financial records are useful only for filing taxes, borrowing money, and reporting to regulatory agencies. The new franchisees must consider that accounting and financial records are basic to any business, franchised or otherwise. Simply put, accounting is a process of measuring and reporting the financial information of the franchise. It is the process by which money...
