INTRODUCTION
Delivering Business Value with IT at Hefty Hardware, this paper investigates the concerns and inadequacies in the IT and Business departments of Hefty Hardware. Thorough reading on the case is made and suggestions has been provided to successfully launch the savvy store. The case clearly communicates that there is no proper communication between the business and the IT departments. Cherly O’Shea, the VP of retail marketing at Hefty, is not at all happy with the way the IT is performing. She feels that IT personnel do not understand the idea behind the Savvy store program. She wants the IT people to support the Savvy Store and improve the customer experience, but IT people always keep talking about the internal stuff like infrastructure, bandwidth and technical architecture, which she is not concerned about. She feels that, she might have to go out of the company to get the savvy store accomplished.
The COO, Glen Vogel, also adds word in word with Cheryl and agrees that Jenny Henderson, IT account manager just acts as if she understand the project. Glen is worried about the value of millions of dollars invested in IT. But, CFO, Michelle Wright, doesn’t seem to agree with Cheryl and Glen and she believes that IT has done a great work in implementing the ERP systems, which is effective in preparing month end reports. Michelle also believes that they have the most cost effective and reliable IT.

...shampoos has to offer. I used to use inexpensive shampoo. The more expensive price is often a detour ant, but the improved ingredients, improved quality, and the satisfaction of knowing your hair not only looks healthy, but is healthy are all reasons why I prefer more expensive shampoos or the more economically friendly brands. Paul Mitchell and Suave differ greatly in cost. Most grocery stores carry products like Suave; which can be purchased for around a dollar a bottle. Paul Mitchell products on the other hand are carried strictly in hair salons and also are much more expensive. Paul Mitchell products tend to be around twenty to thirty dollars a bottle. This is one of the very few disadvantages of Paul Mitchell shampoo products. With the hefty price tag, Paul Mitchell also comes with much more quality than Suave. Suave is a very mild, concentrated formula that does not give the shine and softness that Paul Mitchell does. Paul Mitchell has different formulas for different types of hair. This allows you to have a customized shampoo that your hair will receive many benefits from. Once I made the switch from Suave to Paul Mitchell products I noticed a big difference in the weight and texture of my hair. Styling my hair became a breeze because it no longer required as much product to keep my hair in place for the entire day. Paul Mitchell shampoo contains no silicone. Silicone which is often times found in suave products provides a nice shiny appearance, but causes hair to......

...almost weekly during this period. The total number of recalls relating to accelerator issues were 8.8 million in the U.S. Cost of Recall Crisis Implementing cost cutting strategies that seemed to save the company money initially, back fired in the long run. After ignoring the oil sludging crisis that resulted in bad publicity, Toyota was forced to extend the engine warranty to 8 years. As customers became angry and filed lawsuits, the company decided to reimburse its customers for the cost of engine repairs. This expense was estimated at 8,000 to repair the entire engine. Failing to acknowledge the faulty accelerator problems in a timely manner and reporting it to the authorities, placed the lives of its consumers at risk. As a result hefty fines were imposed on Toyota totaling $16.4 million in civil penalty, which was the maximum. In the oil sludging crisis, Toyota also ignored the complaints and never admitted to manufacturing flaws, which was deemed as misleading by their investors and the public. This also resulted in a large number of lawsuits. Toyota was also faced with high inventory due to the number of recalls and bad publicity, as sales declined. On Going Issues Lean Manufacturing In 1999 Constructions of Cost Competitiveness for the 21st century was implemented, all relating to cutting cost and the number of components in a car by 50%. ...magine a criminal using your nanny cam to watch your house Can You Trust Your Fricge? TODAY'S INTERNET OF THINGS IS FULL OF SECURITY FLAWS. WE MUST DO BETTER By Alan Grau • Illustration by J D King or to scream at your child—or even to post footage of your home on a crime boss's website. And suppose your refrigerator were spewing spam e-mail, enraging people you'd never even met. The Internet of Things has been touted as many things. But what you haven't heard is that it could be your worst enemy. Yet all of these incidents have actually occurred, according to news reports. And it's likely that even more disturbing transgressions have been taking place unbeknownst to homeowners. For example, researchers have discovered that in some cases, they can hack the Internet of Things to intercept each document you print and divert it to a remote site, use your smart TV to bug your house, and even control the traffic light on the corner outside your home. For although the Internet of Things offers great convenience by linking our gadgets—an estimated 50 billion of them worldwide by 2020—it can also let hackers take control of your house, your car, and even your body. The vulnerabilities lie all around you. A recent HP Research study reported that the average Internet of Things gadget has an astounding 25 security flaws, and 70 percent have at least one such vulnerability. Many of these problems may yield to solutions like those adopted by......

...Hefty Hardware Case Study Issues in Case Study • IT department employers have lack of knowledge what is going on in business section of the company. Cheryl O’Shea, VP of retail marketing, said that IT staff always talks in a way that is not understandable to her, mostly in technical words. She assumes that they do not know what to do with Savvy Store program. She needs IT’s help to improve the customer experience. However, IT workers continue talking about the technology staff and issues which are not related to business. • IT staff is not familiar with basic business functions of business department. Glen Vogel, the COO, complains whether they are getting value for investing millions to IT. IT staff is not aware of how their warehouse operates. Therefore, when a new technology does not operate properly, they easily ignore and ask them to add it to the list for the next release. • Glen thinks that IT is not providing new business value for Hefty. Even though IT installed new ERP system, which is very helpful to function month-end and bench-making reports, as well as although reliability and cost-effectiveness for hardware and systems are reasonable, business staff believes IT is not helping to improve the Hefty’s business strategy. • IT leaders are not on track what are happening on business side. The people that run the Hefty Hardware agree that the IT were doing a good job keeping all the viruses out of their system and keeping the database up to date but they needed to do more they felt. They realized that there IT was keeping them ahead of their competition. Viruses have made their competition lose important information that has made them lose customers. Most of the time credit cards are stored in the stores database and if some one got into the store database and stole people credit cards the company would be at fault. The IT have an idea on what the company is doing but they do not know what occurs on a everyday transaction at one their buildings. The short coming of both the IT and the Business: 1) If the business is going to move faster and be more flexible they need to have help from the IT to produce this goal. 2) The CIO has to leave his office and visit some of the store fronts so that he can work out a way the IT team can help the company become more product if. 3) It has to speak in a way that the every day employee that works at the store front can under stand. Delivering Business Value with It at Hefty Hardware

...Delivering business value with IT at Hefty Hardware How effective is the partnership between IT and business at Hefty? The partnership between the two is not very effective at all in fact it seems to be toxic. The chief information officer at Hefty gets replaced about every 2 or 3 years because of this. Below are the identified short comings for both IT and the business. Issues in the case Through the case I was able to identify several issue between business and information technology. First being poor communication between the two. This problem was immediately made clear. On page 78 there was a good example of this when Paul Gutierez talks to Jenny about how the new technology meeting went. The IT team had the business team so confused during the meeting that they eventually just tuned out and IT never actually got to talking about how the new technology could be used for marketing and why it was a good idea. The next issue is the lack of integration between IT and business. Not only do they have problems communicating the points they are trying to get across in language that can be easily understood, but the business end feels as though IT does not know how to meet their goals. A good example of this is on page 76 where it is discussed that “IT people don’t even know some of our basic business functions” and “We don’t feel IT is contributing to creating new business value for Hefty.” Lastly it seems as though there is bad time management and planning on the IT......
