Notes: The History of Computers

• The first man-made computer was the abacus, which was invented by the ancient Chinese thousands of years ago. • The first modern electronic computer was the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) and was first used in 1946. It was used by the United States military for weapons research. It was built using over 18,000 vacuum tubes. These tubes had two major problems—they consumed great amounts of electricity and they burned out quickly (were unreliable). • The second-generation electronic computer was the UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer), in 1951. This machine was smaller than the ENIAC and used only about 5000 vacuum tubes. It was designed for use in commercial businesses, like banks and department stores. • In 1964, IBM (International Business Machines) created the System/360 Mainframe Computer. This machine used transistors, which consumed less electricity and were far more reliable than the vacuum tubes. • In 1977, Radio Shack created the TRS-80 computer. This was the first major desktop computer used in homes throughout the United States. Its base price was around $400 and had only four kilobytes (4000 bits) of memory. Compare this to our classroom computers, which have 128 megabytes (128,000,000 bits) of memory! The monitor was monochrome (green), had no graphics capability, and could not handle lower case letters. • The circuit board is what enables modern computers to be built small and run fast. • The computer’s “brain” is called the CPU. CPU stands for Central Processing…...

With uses such as internet surfing, communication, homework and finance tracking and business the personal computer has been a valuable asset. As the computer evolves during the next 20 years the possibilities seem endless. Here are some of the ways computers may evolve in the next 20 years. As technology develops and improves so does the personal computer. Smaller and faster computer chips are constantly being developed which personalize the computer even more. Stronger and more powerful micro processers will create a more realistic visual environment which will make interaction with the personal computer even easier. The next generation of chips will also provide better interaction through speech and visual recognition. Current programs are able to recognize and respond to your voice but future programs will also be able to read your lips through visual recognition which can be useful to those who are unable to speak. As you dictate to your computer it will recognize when you leave and it will stop dictating. As further developments are made in interactive software our personal lives will become simpler. Pc Games

...PC game "Personal computer game" redirects here. For video games in general, see video game. For other uses, "Computer Games" redirects here. For the album by George Clinton, see Computer Games (album). PC games, also known as computer games, are video games played on a general-purpose personal computer rather than a dedicated video game console or arcade machine. Their defining characteristics include a lack of any centralized controlling authority and greater capacity in input, processing, and output. PC games reached widespread popularity following the video game crash of 1983, particularly in Europe, leading to the era of the "bedroom coder". From the mid-90s onward they lost mass-market traction to console games before enjoying a resurgence in the mid-2000s through digital distribution. The uncoordinated nature of the PC game market and its lack of physical media make precisely assessing its size difficult. Pc Gaming

...CIS 10 | PC Gaming | | Ryan Mills 4-24-2014 | PCs are a good choice for gaming for a multitude of reasons, including but not limited to price, reparability, upgradability, value, versatility, performance, game selection, game prices, and more. Computers are an ever-evolving platform. It grows in power, capability, and value almost every single year. The cause of this improvement is partially because it is free of control from any single entity. Rather than being regulated by a single company, control and improvement influence over the PC belongs to everyone equally. Everybody has the freedom to create and/or sell software and hardware for it. It's being constantly improved by competing companies and individuals all over the hardware spectrum, and all of them are trying to offer you (and game developers) the best experience possible. A common misconception is that pc gaming is more expensive than consoles. It is not. Especially if you only plan to target console performance. There are already graphics cards available on the market for $150 that surpass the PS4 and XBox One in terms of frame rate, resolution, detail, value, and power draw. A lot of people incorrectly believe that you have to spend upwards of $750-$1000 to get a PC fully capable of handling games. These inaccuracies can be attributed partially to the highly vocal and misinformed masses, and to the availability and hype of the expensive PC hardware we see advertised a lot. You see it more because......

Pc Upgrades

...PC Upgrades Michael Ganoe I replaced the keyboard and mouse with the Logitech MK320 wireless ones. The approximate cost would be $40 plus tax. I also installed the device driver and software to be able to use the wireless keyboard and mouse. I choose the MK320 because I liked the looks of it and because of the relatively low cost. I unplugged the current keyboard and mouse from the pc. I used the provided cd to install the device drivers and software. Once installed I paired the keyboard and mouse with the pc. This allows easy use of the mouse and keyboard without the limitations of the wired version. I replaced the pc memory with the G.Skill Trident X Series 8GB. The approximate cost would be $75 dollars plus tax. I choose this memory card because 8GB is more than enough memory. I removed all media from the pc. I turned the pc off. I unplugged the power supply to the pc. I unplugged all attached cables from the pc. I lifted the plastic shield on the back on the pc stand. I used a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the cover. I removed the cover. I then pressed outwards on the tabs on the right and left sides of the memory card to release it. I held the card by the edges and removed it from the compartment. I then oriented the new card with the notch on the edge facing forward and to the right. I held the card by its edges and slide it all the way into the slot pushing downward until it snapped into place. I put the......

...incorporates the basic elements of a program charter discussed in your lecture materials for Week 2. Remember, the Charter is a high level document so it does not require the detail of your project scope and specifications and other project documents. Please note that there are important differences between project charters that focus on the iron triangle (scope, cost, schedule) and program charters that focus on the Program Management Domains and Program Benefit Delivery. The Project Management Office was introduced to AtekPC because of the continuous changes and stresses that were on the personal computer industry. The industry was in transition with falling profit margins. “The PC Industry was experiencing tremendous cost pressure and was undergoing a period of consolidation. As profit margins fell, PC makers were launching cost reduction strategies aimed at further improving efficiency of their supply chains, while lowering the cost of distribution” (Hupp, Keil, & McFarlan). Corporations and consumers were keeping their personal computers for a longer period of time before buying a new one because of the difficulty of transitioning to a new computer and the cost associated with upgrading. This turn in the industry caused AtekPC to re-evaluate their current processes and implement a PMO. This implementation was a sufficient reason because if they needed to make a change within their information technology sectors and create new innovative products in order to make......

Upgrading a Pc

...Upgrading a PC Rodolfo Garcia Jr. EET250 Computer Configuration I ECPI University Abstract This paper covers the topics of upgrading a PC with new components such as RAM, Wireless Devices, larger Hard Drive, and a new Optical drive. This paper will discuss the prices and benefits of performing these upgrades. Keywords: Motherboard, CPU, RAM, PCI, SATA, technician, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, USB, Hard Drive, Optical Drive, DVD, Blu-Ray, HDMI, 1080p video. Upgrading a PC As technology changes, so does the needs of the average PC user. When technology outpaces the capabilities of your PC, many people choose to upgrade their device instead of purchasing a completely new system which sometimes happens after a couple of months. There are several ways to upgrade a PC to keep it up to date with the emerging technology. When the motherboard and CPU are relatively newer, they are often capable of keeping up with the newest demands placed on them, however other components could benefit from an upgrade to improve performance and stability. Some of the most common upgrades include new or additional RAM, wireless devices such as a keyboard and mouse, larger and/or faster hard drive, and a new optical drive that is capable of handling the demands of new video and storage capabilities. Upgrading RAM is probably the single best option for improving speed and performance of a system. When it comes to upgrading RAM there are a few things to keep in mind such as the......

Pc Industry

...From the mid 1970’s the structure of the PC industry had experienced a huge growth and changed dramatically. In 2001, 40% of the PC shipments were accounted by the top four PC vendors namely: Dell, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and IBM. Dell, a direct-sales pioneer, grew exponentially in the 1990s and emerged as the worldwide market leader in 2001. During 2001-2002 it was the most profitable among the market leaders. Compaq came up with a full range of PCs ranging between $1,000 and $10,000. Whereas, IBM, which at once had a market share of 30%, was at this time going through a dramatic restructuring to stop its market share and profits from deteriorating further. Whereas, HP maintained a comparatively smaller share in PC sales. Besides these main vendors, there existed other well-known brands such as Acer, Fujitsu, Gateway, NEC and Toshiba. Also, there existed PCS without brands which were assembled by small retailers, resellers accounting for about 23% of the market in North America, 50% in Europe and over two-thirds of the market in China. DELL: Dell’s distinct and successful business model mainly focused on direct sales and build-to-order manufacturing. Shipping of the products was provided in 36 hours, which was how Dell was able to maintain the inventory of as low as six days compared to Compaq’s 26 days inventory. Their model helped them achieve the goal of offering products to customers that accurately matched their requirements and liking. COMPAQ: Compaq was......

Pc Mainframe

...One of the major disadvantages to the mainframe is the cost. Starting in the tens of thousands of dollars, into the hundreds of thousands, the cost of a mainframe is simply too much for small companies that needs them. Another major cost about mainframes is the skill level of employees you would have to hire to maintain and run the programs. Most cutting edge mainframe design is not so much interpret by single task computational speed, typically defined as MIPS rate or FLOPS. A PC is a ‘is any general-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and original sales price make it useful for individuals, and which is intended to be operated directly by an end-user with no intervening computer operator.’ A PC generally use windows processor spreadsheet or some type of presentation. Before PC was so advance user were creating their own programs, now there are thousands of developer out there creating programs. “From the buisness view the mainframe has many rewards over the PC. The small footprint of a mainframe is more eye-catching to larger companies; not only due to the small space requirements, low power and cooling requirements make mainframes more attractive as well. The mainframe also makes setting up remote offices faster and lower cost. By installing dumb terminals rather than individual personal computers, the setup time and administrative overhead is reduced dramatically.” A smaller company on the other hand who might not have the financial resources......
