Horizon Consulting Patti Smith looked up at the bright blue Carolina sky before she entered the offices of Horizon Consulting. Today was Friday, which meant she needed to prepare for the weekly status report meeting. Horizon Consulting is a custom software development company that offers fully integrated mobile application services for iPhone ™ , Android ™ , Windows Mobile ® and BlackBerry ® platforms. Horizon was founded by James Thrasher, a former Marketing executive, who quickly saw the potential for digital marketing via smartphones. Horizon enjoyed initial success in sports marketing, but quickly expanded to other industries. A key to their success was the decline in cost for developing smartphone applications which expanded the client base. The decline in cost was primarily due to learning curve and ability to build customized solutions on established platforms. Patti Smith was a late bloomer who went back to college after working in the restaurant business for nine years. She and her former husband had tried unsuc-cessfully to operate a vegetarian restaurant in Golden, Colorado. After her di-vorce, she returned to University of Colorado where she majored in Management Information Systems with a minor in Marketing. While she enjoyed her marketing classes much more than her MIS classes, she felt the IT know- how acquired would give her an advantage in the job market. This turned out to be true as Horizon hired her to be an Account Manager soon after graduation. Patti Smith was hired to replace Stephen Stills who had started the restaurant side of the business at Horizon. Stephen was “ let go” according to one Account Manager for being a prima donna and hoarding resources. Patti’s clients ranged from high- end restaurants to hole in wall Mom and Pop shops. She helped de-velop smartphone apps that let users make reservations, browse menus, receive alerts on daily…...

The machine can process 60 pounds per hour. What is break-even volume of shrimps needed to be processed each day to justify the investment into the machine? Case Study: Trust Issues Glaxo Smith

...unethical and socially irresponsible practices? One of the top three global vaccine manufacturers, GlaxoSmithKline agreed to plead guilty and pay three billion dollars to resolve allegations of fraud and failure to report safety data. This information was released by the Department of Justice office of Public Affairs as of July 2, 2012. GSK unethically published and promoted false and misleading accounts of studies and treatment guidelines to persuade physicians to use their drugs. Clinical evidence was misrepresented, safety risks were downplayed and sometimes flat out ignored, and GSK chose not to disclose the United States Food and Drug Administration’s rejection of some of the claims GSK was making to doctors. These products although rejected by the FDA were promoted for uses that were not medically accepted by federal health care programs and that the FDA had not approved as safe and effective. Physicians were persuaded to prescribe GSK drugs. Persuasion was brought on through a variety of gifts, payments, trips to Bermuda, Jamaica, spa treatments, hunting trips, and bogus consulting fees. To hear that one of the top vaccine manufacturer’s has deceived, and fraudulently misrepresented clinical evidence to increase their bottom line is disheartening. Where did GSK’s mission and socially responsible beliefs go? As stated earlier GSK has stated that they are transparent in their research regardless of its outcome and ethical prioritizing and performance with integrity is......

Case Study Smith Financial

...Managerial Communication Participant Name: Case Title: Main Problem and Reasons for the Problem Solution/Recommendations 1 | Page Case Analysis Form Muhammad Jehanzaib Khan (ERP 11660) Smith Financial Corporation (SFC) There were several fundamental flaws from SFC’s senior management and Miller, which eventually led to his termination. The old resource in the S&P had 3-15 years of experience in the firm and despite the post being vacant for over 1 year and none of them weren’t given a chance to lead this department and it was directly under Jones. The senior management hired Miller with a goal to restructure and reorganize the Information Department; the real need of it was not discussed with the existing team members. Problems with Miller’s Management and Communication Style: Since the very first task assigned to Miller, he made it clear that he wanted things to be done his way and imposed his decisions on the staff. Miller was given too much liberty and as he exploited the freedom given to him; a sense of disownment amongst the staff arose. Without considering the fact that SFC had invested in a new software platform Miller showed no sensitivity to the company’s investment and staff. Although Miller took comments of the data management team, in reality he adopted an arrow approach claiming the staff’s comments/feedback as mere excuses, by which he lost his credibility. This approach de-motivated the staff and it was seen that a few people associated with Lotus left SFC....
