Hum 176 Week 3 Question1

...HUM/176 Week 3 Assignment Hello, I hear so many good things and am so fascinated with what you can do with the Internet. Finding all this information so quickly must make your life very easy. But please tell me: how do you assess the value of all this information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? Also, I have heard the term “digital divide.” What exactly does it mean, and how do you think this divide could be bridged? Thank you for helping me to understand these issues! Best regards, Your friend Dear Friend, I just wanted to see if I can help you understand a little about the internet and answer some of the questions you had. In the beginning you had to have a phone line, but the big cable companies started to use the cable system to transfer the data making it faster and more reliable. Private companies would start-up web browsers and search engines, internet service providers and email; all quickly changed the landscape and the culture around us. Many people became rich and powerful, but along with them came the scammers and those that were less ethical. Because of them the reliability of what you were reading, viewing or watching became suspect. There was so much money to be made because the net had exploded into almost every household in America. You had asked how to check the reliability of what you are reading; there are many ways to do this. The simplest way is to look at the internet as a vast array...

If he or she is married, use a flat tax rate of 15%. If he or she is single, use 22%; if he or she is divorced, use 23%; and if he or she is widowed, use 13% (I realize that these are not very realistic). Identify the composition that you listened to, and determine whether you would characterize the chosen composition as either the Classical or Romantic style of music. Explain the key features that lead you to your conclusion. Briefly, identify one (1) modern musician who you believe was great at one type of music yet pioneered another. I listened to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in its entirety. I’m not musically inclined and I do not have the ability to read or write music, however after listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 is Romantic more than classical. Although you can find some of both characteristics while listening like the frequent changes in the tempo that is typically found in Romantic music and the texture of Classical music which is essentially homophonic. While listening to the first movement, the gentle sounds of the instruments warming up softly with violins played with a structure rhythm and drums adding to the volume. The next two movements was at a faster pace. There was some emotion present in the way the music went from fast to slow as the volume build from soft to very loud. The final movement seemed more relaxing to......

Points of View: the Role of Video Games

...Points of View: The Role of Video Games HUM/115 Critical Thinking in Everyday Life Point of View: The Role of Video Games Step One: Topic Several incidents that involve gun and physical violence have been said to be inspired by video games. While it is true that the theme of many video games involve taking action in realistic gun fights and gruesome battle scenes, being involved in these activities also have purposes of teaching and honing the player’s mind. Without understanding the efforts and concept behind creating this virtual recreation, it is more challenging to show people that these games are not all meant to relay lessons of violence and destruction. That there is more, such as enhancing strategy skill, dexterity, and proper gamesmanship. Step Two: Two Articles From the “Opposing Viewpoints in Context” section of the University Library, I have chosen these two articles support my opinion on the subject of video games. “Violent Video Games Are Not Linked to Real-World Violence” by Torrey Meeks and “Violent Video Games Promote Teen Aggression and Violence” by Craig A. Anderson. Both sources provide many references and clearly explains the positive and negative effects of video games. References such as past events and factual examples. In both articles there is a background for each of the authors, which is evidence of their credibility. Step 3: Summary In the article written by Meeks, he states several how other media besides video games can be a stronger......

Point of View

...Point of View There are three different points of view (also known as perspectives) a writer can use: First Person, Second Person, and Third Person. First Person: Writers using the first person point of view write from their own point of view: “I believe” “I think” “I saw” To understand first person perspective, imagine you are telling your friend about your day. Usually, when you tell someone about your own experiences, you use the first person perspective because it tells the reader what you thought, felt or did. Second Person: Writers using second person point of view write from the reader’s point of view: “You believe” “You think” “You saw” To understand the second person perspective, imagine you are giving a speech to your class- mates about how to bake a cake. Instructions are often given in the second person point of view because it tells the reader what to think, feel, or do. The second person can also be used when a writer is addressing a familiar audience. Third Person: Writers using the third person point of view write from an anonymous observer’s point of view: “He/She believes” “The philosopher thinks” “The witness saw” To understand third person perspective, imagine a camera that views what is going on around it: The camera cannot say, “I think this is good,” or “I think this is bad.” Also, it cannot say, “You think this is good,” or “You think this is bad.” The camera can only show what it records and allows the......

The Point in Point of View

...The use of point of view is what allows authors to paint a descriptive and always evolving story line through the use of words. It gives the reader the keys to unlock their imagination and let their mind run wild with possibilities. An example of two different narrative styles can be seen in Margaret Atwood’s “Death by Landscape” and Richard Ford’s “Great Falls”. Using completely opposite methods to convey their stories these authors achieve a very similar effect on the reader. These methods include: foreshadowing, mystery, and highlighting the protagonist characteristics’. Both stories leave the reader with a feeling of empathy and a burning desire to know the truth. “Death by Landscape” is a handcrafted masterpiece written in third-person, about a young girl named Lois. Atwood however, takes it one step further in that of limited omniscience. By doing this, both the reader and Lois have the same feelings and reactions to Lucy’s disappearance. She “stepped sideways, and disappeared from time.” (Atwood, 35) The mystery and lack of closure that surrounds Lois also surrounds the reader. The same can be said for Ford’s “Great Falls”, who portrays the narrator as a young boy named Jackie. Ford does something unique by using Jackie as a distant narrator. He doesn’t want to know what is going on despite knowing something is wrong. “I have never known the answer to these questions, have never asked anyone their answers.” (Ford, 575) Although they use different styles of......

...Should Assisted Suicide be Legal? Stefan C Sooter HUM/115 October 12, 2015 Beverly Sessoms Should Assisted Suicide be Legal? As I type this opening paragraph for my essay, I should precursor this by saying that I'm beginning this piece as a non-advocate for assisted suicide. It's not just about my religious views, but also for the fact that I believe that with modern medical miracles, anything can happen. If you tap out of the fight too early, you may never know what could have happened. I understand that the situation can feel hopeless, and one can be in so much pain that one may feel like they can't take anymore, but I've witnessed first-hand desperate situations turn into miracles. My father was diagnosed in 2009 with Stage 3 Esophageal cancer. The chances of him living, especially at 65 years old, were thirty-three percent, at best. Today, he is one hundred percent in remission and living his life as a healthy senior man. That example alone is my reason for not believing in assisted suicide. A publication in the Evening Chronicle states that assisted suicide may be a dangerous law to pass. If legalized, it could set a precedent for those that are disabled or terminally ill to take their lives as to not be a burden to their family or friends (Anonymous, 2010). The author also goes on to discuss how legalizing assisted suicide could, "create pressure, particularly on those who are newly physically challenged, to end their lives. We should be fighting for proper......

...Points of View Amanda B. HUM/115 April 18, 2016 Nora Clarke Points of View Healthcare System To put it simply I think our healthcare system is broken, especially since Obamacare came into action. More and more people are unable to afford the high cost of the insurance plans, and if you do not get the coverage, you get a fine at the end of the year. The Affordable Care Act was supposed to have been created to help people, but with the high cost of plans and outrageous deductibles & being fined if you do not get coverage, it seems to have hurt people more than help them. Healthcare Crisis Countdown: [ALL Edition] "Polls find at least 60 percent of Americans want public financing of the $2 trillion healthcare system, something that would work the way Medicare does for older citizens. The government would foot much of the bill from private hospitals and physicians" (Francis, 2006, para. 14). I believe the information that is provided in the article is not reliable. The author quotes others’ work and talks about percentage ratings of various things having to do with the healthcare system but, he does not show any proof. There are not graphs stating how, whoever conducted the study, came up with those numbers and no external link content anywhere to verify the information at hand. The author David R. Francis seems to be credible from the research I had done on him. According to “The Fiscal Times” (2016) website, he is a very well-known author for multiple......

Hum 176 - Week 3

...Disney Movies are more than entertainment; they are a piece of pop culture that generations of children will remember forever. It all started in 1937 when Disney released its first feature length film, Snow White. To date, Disney has released more than 300 films. Each generation will have its own memory of their favorite Disney movies. For instance, any child born in the last 15 years will remember Toy Story. It was released in 1995 and followed by Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3. Disney really made an impact on kids with Toy Story. It was a wonderful story about a boy and the friendship between his two toys, a lovable, stuffed cowboy named Woody (voice by Tom Hanks), and an astronaut toy named Buzz Light-year (voice by Tim Allen). Today, Toy Story and the characters are a big part of Disneyland Amusement Parks. There are Toy Story rides that excite kids of all ages. It seems with every Disney movie launch there are mass toy sales and fast food restaurants selling “Happy Meals’ with Disney movie character toys. It is almost impossible to avoid the media and advertising explosion after a Disney movie release. What is nice about Disney movies is that parents can feel good about their kids watching them because Disney represents “wholesome.” A parent can be assured that the content of the movie will be age appropriate for their child. Disney movies are an icon in American pop culture. What Disney movie do you remember the most?...

...Each individual short story has its’ own point of view and voice. Within short stories there are different types of narrative and also different types of irony being used. Each individual author has their own way of telling a story; also they have a certain way to portray their story to an audience. For two specific short stories Everything That Rises Must Converge and Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter we can analyze to see what point of view and voice is being used. Everything That Rises Must Converge is a story that takes place in the 1960’s. A recent college graduate, Julian who escorts his mother to her weekly weight-loss class at the YMCA. His mother attends these classes to reduce her high blood pressure. He escorts her there every week because she refuses to take the bus alone since integration. His mother is extremely prejudice and Julian was the total opposite. In Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter this story is about the life of Mrs. Dutta, an old, widowed Indian woman who had moved into her son’s American home two months prior. Mrs. Dutta struggles with not running a house and in the midst is writing a letter to a dear friend back home contemplating weather to be truthful or to be honorable to her family. First I would like to review witch point of view is being used both stories. For the first short story Everything That Rises Must Converge, the story is being told from a third person point of view. The story has someone who is not any of the characters stating the events...
