...and a tall coffee. ―Where have you been? The Nekki has just fell five percentages last night. Ooo, you‘ve brought Starbucks!‖ Sandy exclaimed. ―I haven‘t had a blueberry muffin from them in ages. I used to stop there a couple of times a week for latte, but since they closed the one closest to here, I am latte deficient.‖ ―I know,‖ Ronnie replied. ―I had to drive three miles out of my way for this, but I really like their hazelnut Mocha on a cold November morning. I either have to make a drive or stop at Caribou to get my full-bodied grande Espresso. But it‘s just not the same.‖ Sandy replied, ―That is true. I used to sit and listen to the music while I sipped my coffee at Starbuck. As they open a lot more stores, the atmosphere of the new ones is not as enjoyable as the old ones. It is starting to feel like Dunkin Donuts. Starbucks has really grown since that first Seattle store in 1971. In the last three years, from 2005 to 2007, they have opened 6,442 stores.‖ ―Sandy, you seem to know a lot about Starbucks. Do you know why they closed the nearby store‖ said Ronnie. ―Well, Tom, our boss, has asked me to evaluate the impact of their expansion. I started looking at their free cash flows, return on invested capital and financial ratios. May I have a muffin,‖ Sandy said. 1/17 Starbucks Coffee Company ―Sure, take one,‖ Ronnie offered. ―Besides expanding locations, Starbucks offers a variety of products. I can buy the music I like listening to from Starbucks. They also sell......

...Modeling Culture in Trade: Uncertainty Avoidance* Gert Jan Hofstede Wageningen University gertjan.hofstede@wur.nl Catholijn M. Jonker Delft University of Technology c.m.jonker@tudelft.nl Tim Verwaart LEI Wageningen UR tim.verwaart@wur.nl Keywords: trade, culture, agents, uncertainty avoidance, negotiation Abstract A model is presented of the way that our cultural attitude towards the unknown influences the decisions we make in trade. Uncertainty avoidance is one of Hofstede’s five cultural dimensions. The paper presents a model of how this dimension affects trade. This influence has been explicated for the decisions regarding trade: partner selection, negotiation behavior, trust, and the interpretation of the trade partner’s behavior. It has been verified in simulations showing that the generic tendencies as attributed to uncertainty avoidance are reflected in the simulation results. Our approach is an example of instantiating generic knowledge on the influences of culture on decision-making in general. INTRODUCTION The international food economy is rapidly changing. Important issues are concentration and globalization, growing information intensity, consumer demands, and social responsibility [Kinsey 2001]. An important issue in current food trade research is the emergence and performance of international supply chain networks [Lazzarini et al. 2001]. Agent-based modeling extends the understanding of processes in society and economy. It enables simulation of the......

After the machinery and oil industry, this industry as a modern service industryandthe device to create connectivity among nations and various people in the world have been under public attention. Attention to this industry especially in the countries which are rich in historic, cultural and natural attraction resources is more considerable. Due to the lack of marketing, the role of this industry in the developing countries is paler than before. Development of this industry in Iran as one of the diversification strategies of country's income sources should be paid more attention by program makers and politicians' of the country. Today, marketing efforts are far more important than production and sales, so if a country has enough facilities andpossess potential of tourism but does not consider the marketing techniques and the introduction of this attraction in its programs, doubtlessly that country won`t be successful in growing and developing its tourism industry. Thus in order to gain progress in the tourism, giving attention to retrieval looks so essential and of course it is important to note that tourism development and marketing in the process are closely tied together and can......
