...English 111 Kennedy, Cecilia Proposal Paper October 27, 2010 To Finish or Quit? High School dropouts represent an important problem that affects thousands of students each year. Roughly one third of all students will drop out of high school without having received their diplomas. According to The National Center for Education Statistics, "only 86% of the class of 1998 graduated." Some examples for not graduating could include pregnancy, poor influences, no friends, poor grades, or simply lacking the motivation to finish. Dropping out of school is not only an educational problem but a significant social problem as well. Indeed, it has obvious psychological, economical, and social ramifications. For example, dropouts may undergo a loss of self-esteem and turn to drugs or become a financial burden to society. Nearly every student struggles with meeting their personal goals pertaining to grades. Some students may strive for all A's while others struggle to complete an assignment. Students who are struggling to receive credit may find it easier to quit. For some, this option may be less embarrassing than trying to graduate and fall short and not being able......

A Leader

...Who is a leader? A leader is a person or animal that holds a dominant or superior position within its field, and is able to exercise a high degree of control and influence over others towards achievement of a goal. He is a teacher who leads his group by mentoring and constantly communicating his vision and objectives. He sets the pace and create conducive environment for the followers. The place of leadership cannot be over-emphasized in both humans and animals; an illustration is the case of the black ants who are always confused without a leader. A leader has a deep understanding of his subject matter, and a strong orientation towards achievements. He understands how to recognise, recruit, develop, and deploy talents, focusing on applying the best talents to best opportunities. He also knows when it is time to make changes and cut losses as required. Regardless of sentiments, he does the right things and never compromised core values. He builds trust and engenders confidence with his stakeholders in order to succeed. He thinks big regardless of the physical or geographical boundaries of his current role, since limited thinking yields limited results. He is externally oriented, hungry for knowledge of the world, and adept at connecting developments and spotting patterns. Possessions of powerful motivation to increase his knowledge base and to convert his learning into actionable initiatives are always in his thoughts. He questions, challenges, confronts and never accepts......

Leader

...something to add to the house. He tells me to make everything better than what it is so everything can look nice. I tell him that’s a lot of work and then he answer me with something I’ll never forget, my father tells me “You do the hard things in life first, and everything else will come easy”. It’s true; life only gets easier when the hard things are out of the way first. That made me realize right there that working hard really will pay off in the end if you put your best into it. From the moment my father told me his life story, my life was steered into the right path. I wanted to prove to him that I could become something special and give him what he deserves. I just want him to know how proud I want him to be of me because I want to be successful. My father has opened up my eyes to a different world. A world called reality. From that day on my life has been devoted to become a better scholar, gentleman and to become a better soccer player. Doing my duties on and off the field, I know I can become a better person by just what my father has taught me about his life experience, because I know that all he wants is for me and my brother and sister to have the best and to have the things he never could imagine for. I feel as though being a better man is sort of a job that I can never quit from. It’s a job that I work for every single day of my life and the only pay I get is the gratitude from my father, friends and family members that I have here. Not only do I have to......

Quit Smoking

...Why Quit Smoking? You can reduce your risks. Smoking is the most important preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Smokers have a higher risk of developing many chronic disorders, including atherosclerosis — the buildup of fatty substances in the arteries — which can lead to coronary heart disease, heart attack (myocardial infarction) and stroke. Controlling or reversing atherosclerosis is an important part of preventing future heart attack or stroke You can modify or control six major independent risk factors for coronary heart disease: • • • • • • Cigarette and tobacco smoke High blood cholesterol High blood pressure Physical inactivity Overweight or obesity Diabetes Smoking by itself increases the risk of coronary heart disease. When it acts with the other factors, it greatly increases your risk from those factors, too. Smoking decreases your tolerance for physical activity and increases the tendency for blood to clot. It decreases HDL (good) cholesterol. Your risks increase greatly if you smoke and have a family history of heart disease. Smoking also creates a higher risk for peripheral artery disease and aortic aneurysm. It increases the risk of recurrent coronary heart disease after bypass surgery, too. Why We Quit By Yvonne Raley •In the U.S., more students drop out of college than graduate--yet six out of every 10 jobs require a postsecondary education. What causes so many students to squander their future? In her 20s, Diana dreamed of becoming a scientific illustrator. She had not yet attended college, so she was thrilled when she received an acceptance letter from an undergraduate graphic arts program in New York City. But her excitement gave way to anxiety during the first days and weeks at her new school. Fretting about her performance, Diana sought out her professors for comfort and advice. She found them aloof and difficult to contact, however, because none of them posted office hours. When Diana reached out to the chair of the art department, he either was unavailable or expressed little interest in her concerns. Diana's academic fears were unfounded--her first semester grades turned out to be quite good. But lacking contact and support from her teachers, Diana felt lonely, dejected and lost in the crowd. She was so disillusioned, in fact, that she abruptly dropped out of college--and never went back. Now 38, Diana teaches English as a Second Language part-time for an international language school. Her pay is $10 per hour, and she has no opportunity for advancement. ......

Communication includes writing and talking, as well as nonverbal communication (such as facial expressions, body language, or gestures), visual communication (the use of images or pictures, such as painting, photography, video or film) and electronic communication (telephone calls, electronic mail, cable television, or satellite broadcasts). Communication is a vital part of personal life and is also important in business, education, and any other situations where people encounter each other (Encarta, 1998). The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not there was a communication gap between the supervisors and the customer service representatives and/or unit leaders within organization, XYZ. The data was collected from the customer service representatives and/or unit leaders through the use of a multiple choice single answer survey. The survey was distributed via face-to-face (drop-off-survey). Eighty seven percent of the surveys were returned to the researcher. Although once rumored that there was a lack of communication within the organization, the result of the research was quite the opposite. Majority of the participants straddled the fence when asked about the overall satisfaction of communication within the organization. They thought that their supervisor's communicated well. And like other organizations they usually received most of their information through the grapevine. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Trust in the Lord with all you heart and lean not......

I Quit

...Well, I didn’t quit. It was worse than that.  It was the middle of a meeting. I was bored out of my mind. Plus I was nervous because my new boss told me “don’t worry about it” when I asked about a raise.  “Don’t worry about it” means “**** you.” And my leg hurt. I had fallen the day before on the way to my lunch with my work friends. So in the middle of the meeting, I excused myself for the bathroom. I limped out. I said goodbye to the receptionist. I didn’t take my coat, my bag, or any of books. My name might still be on my door. I took the elevator 49 floors down. I went up to Grand Central, took the train 70 miles north. I never went back to work. They tried calling me and emailing me. Even many years later I got an email from the boss saying, “we’d still love to have you”. I never responded to any of the emails or calls, even that last one. You can judge me. It wasn’t the most ethical way to leave a job. And I’m not very good at confrontation. But sometimes it’s too much. Sometimes all the BS adds up until you can’t move anymore, until you can’t get out of bed. What’s so bad, honey?... says my imaginary friend who loves me every day. A) For every dollar of value I create, 50-80 percent of it is eaten by the boss or his boss, or his boss, or some machine. B) For every dollar I take home, 40 percent is taken by the government, 10 percent is taken by healthcare, and another few percent is taken by transportation to work. C) I was deluded......

Leader

...technologies, competition, new ideas, profitability expectations, new leadership, and employee turnover. Organizations expect leaders to be a catalyst for change, therefore, the leader cannot afford to stick his or her head in the sand whenever change is occurring and hope the situation will quietly pass them by. Learning to manage high-velocity change is one of the most important leadership skills for a person to master for themselves, their employees, and the organization. What Leaders Need To Know About Managing Change Many of the changes that occurred in the last 18 months were unpredictable, or at least unpredicted, like the crash of the housing market, the collapse of numerous home mortgage and lending institutions, the near meltdown of the big-three U. S. automakers, and the millions of unemployed workers. The implication of the unpredictable nature of change for organizations is clear: although in many cases they may not be able to anticipate change, they can always be fast adapters (Lawler, et al., 2006). In uncertain and rapidly changing environments, organizations are challenged to accomplish two often-conflicting objectives: performing well against a current set of environmental demands and changing themselves to face future business environments (Lawler, et al., 2006). To meet these objectives, the organization must be able to count on the leaders at all levels to understand and adapt to these ever-changing environments. Simply stated, the challenge......

...followers towards the goal attainment. The attributes of being able to affect others with own action is what makes an individual a leader. I have learned that leadership is not a position but indeed it’s an action. Leadership is way more than an authority over others. It’s an art of extracting work from the followers by telling them what to do and how to do. Numerous factors that influence how the leadership is exercised are “legitimacy”. It says that leadership is about getting the work done by imposing authority over the individuals working under you. Second factor is “Intentions”. It implies that results of a decision taken by the leader must be aligned with what the leader desired to achieve. Third factor is “Initiative”. It says that leadership is not something which is routine. Leaders tend to respond differently in different situations on the basis of their experience and judgments. Fourth factor is “Morality”. This factor explains that as a leader, individuals have to make choices. The choices that they make will define the moral dimension of how they are leading. The last factor is “Behavior”. It is based on the importance of being able to motivate the follower with the conduct of leader. (Kennedy, 1994) The things that I have learned about leadership that will be helpful to me and the organization I will work for are that there is no need for a leader to fake if he doesn’t know something.
