...[8]:288, 290-291 When the Marshall Plan went into effect in 1947, many European countries began receiving aid from other sources. Faced with this competition, the World Bank shifted its focus to non-European countries. Until 1968, its loans were earmarked for the construction of income-producing infrastructure, such as seaports, highway systems, and power plants, that would generate enough income to enable a borrower country to repay the loan. 1968–1980 From 1968 to 1980, the bank concentrated on meeting the basic needs of people in the developing world. The size and number of loans to borrowers was greatly increased as loan targets expanded from infrastructure into social services and other sectors.[9] These changes can be attributed to Robert McNamara who was appointed to the presidency in 1968 by Lyndon B. Johnson.[7]:60-63 McNamara imported a technocratic managerial style to the Bank that he had used as United States Secretary of Defense and President of the Ford Motor Company.[7]:62 McNamara shifted bank policy toward measures such as building schools and hospitals, improving literacy and agricultural reform. McNamara created a new system of gathering information from potential borrower nations that enabled the bank to process loan applications much faster. To finance more loans, McNamara told bank treasurer Eugene Rotberg to seek out new sources of capital outside of the northern banks that had been the primary sources of bank funding. Rotberg used the global bond......

Library System

...A Library System 1. Inception We have been asked to build a computer based library system that will handle the bookkeeping aspects of a library and provide user browsing facilities. The first thing to do is to go and find out about the target library or libraries to see what they do now and what they would like to be able to do. We get the following data: 2. Requirements Books and Journals. The library contains both books and journals. It may have several copies of the same book. Some of the books are for short term loans only. All other books may be borrowed by any library member for 3 weeks. Only members of staff may borrow journals. Members of the library can normally borrow up to 6 items at a time, but members of staff may borrow up to 12 items at a time. New books and journals arrive regularly and sometime disposed of; the catalogue needs to be updated. The current year’s journals are sent away to be bound at the end of each year. Borrowing. It is essential that the system keeps track of when books and journals are borrowed and returned. The new system should produce reminders when a book is overdue. It may be desirable to allow users to extend their loans if the book is not reserved. The system enforces the rules for borrowing given above. Browsing: The system should allow users to search for a book on a particular topic or by a particular author etc. The user should then be able to check if the book is on loan and if so to reserve the......

Automation of Inventory System

...The same case applies in Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative, Inc., better known as CENPELCO, who currently has no automated fixed asset inventory method nor does it use barcode or other types of technology to track fixed assets on its daily operations. CENPELCO currently relies on manual inventory methods to maintain their fixed asset information in their Accounting System and as a result, the inventory system becomes prone to human error. Due to the inefficiency of manual inventory, security is also being risked. If not properly monitored, theft and loss of items can actually take place. It is also time consuming to take note of several details each time an item is brought in and out of the stock room which will most likely be a loss for the cooperative. In CENPELCO, there are corresponding forms for every incoming and outgoing item (from the warehouse room). These forms serve as the basis of comparison when inspecting; that is, the amount of item that goes in or out must tally with those written in the forms. Afterwards, all the transactions will then be encoded manually in Microsoft Excel and Bin card for future reference. In addition to the complexity of the process, the employee/s responsible on this task also needs to check the stocks once in a while so as to monitor which items are already getting below the allowable minimum quantity. To have proper accounting for materials, equipment and supplies, CENPELCO conducts physical inventory periodically (at least......

...distinction with data and information in the context of information systems. Data are collection of facts and figures which relay something specific but which are not organized in any way and which provide no further information regarding patterns and context. For data to become information, it must be contextualized, categorized, calculated and condensed (Davenport & Prusak, 2000). Information thus paints a bigger picture; it is data with relevance and purpose. It may convey a trend in the environment, or perhaps indicate a pattern of sales for a given period of time. Data, information and knowledge can all be viewed as assets of organizations. Many organizations realize they own a huge amount of knowledge and that this knowledge needs to be managed in order to be useful. There are two types of knowledge: namely explicit and tacit knowledge (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995). Tacit knowledge was originally defined by Polanyi in 1966. It is sometimes referred to as know-how (Brown & Duguid, 1998) and refers to intuitive, hard to define knowledge that is largely experience based. Tacit knowledge tends to reside within the head of the knowers, whereas explicit knowledge is formalized and codified, and is sometimes referred to as know-what (Brown & Duguid, 1998). It is therefore fairly easy to identify, store and retrieve (Wellman 2009). This type of knowledge most easily handled by Knowledge Management System, which are very effective at facilitating the storage,......

With the help of machine people perform their job comfortably and quickly and ultimately it increases people’s efficiency and effectiveness. In case of library the term “automation” basically means computerization of library activity. Computer influences all fields of human activity. Pandey S.K.
