"Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” Oprah Winfrey

Do you know of someone who seems to get all the breaks life has to offer? Do you have a friend that seems to always be at the right place at the right time all the time? I very well might have just described either a friend or contemporary. Personally, I am from the belief system that you create your own luck! Thus, I very much agree with the speaker “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity”. This reminds me of when of a job I took many years ago that was a door to door sales opportunity. My responsibilities were very simple, I needed to walk in both residential neighborhoods and apartment complexes selling automobile maintenance programs for $34.95 apiece. I was typically given 7 or 8 programs to sell and if I ran out my boss would bring me more. Well, it became a nightly ritual for him to bring me extra programs. I didn’t complain, that’s for sure. When the night would end and my colleagues and I were discussing our different sells for the evening, several would say “Vickery must be the luckiest salesmen alive.” Well, I couldn’t disagree, many of my sales were luck, I thought? But, as I reflect back on those times I realize that I preparing for the objections that would be hurled my way each evening and I carefully, mapped out my territory so when I did knock on each door I was ready to solve their car maintenance problems. Additionally, I was willing to knock on 3 times as many doors as they were. The net result was I sold more however, it wasn’t luck at all it was merely, being ready for each opportunity. As luck would have it, our parents help guide, encourage and navigate us down the road less traveled. They offer us priceless pieces of wisdom that if accepted will train us to know which fork in the road do we take? Each of us have independent lessons we must learn and who…...

Second Chances

...Second Chances Cold blooded murder is cold blooded murder no matter if a 17 year old commits the crime or a 40 year old. When you are holding someone’s’ life in your hands and deciding how long they should serve in prison for their crime, I would imagine it to be a very difficult situation, especially if the person is under 18. But I also believe that the punishment should fit the crime. The Supreme Court ruled that it violates the 8th amendment for a minor to go to prison for life without the chance for parole. I agree with the Supreme Court’s decision because there are many extenuating circumstances that need to be taken into account, no matter if you are dealing with a minor or an adult. First and foremost murder is murder no matter who commits it, but when you are young and you commit such a heinous crime, I believe that you are mentally unstable. I think that these people should be helped psychologically. This does not mean that they shouldn’t go to prison and that they just get a pat on the back and a referral to a psychologist, this means that they should get a chance for parole if they mature and get mentally stable. The character of a juvenile is not as well formed as that of an adult so that person should get a chance to prove that he or she deserves a second chance. Secondly, juveniles are very easily influenced by peer pressure. They are forced into situations in which they don’t really know what to do, which could force them to act out and do something......

Luck in the Ancient Mariner

...familiar? Don’t our lives seem, sometimes, the result of a game of dice being played by someone/something bigger than ourselves, even bigger than life itself? Just the fact that we are who we are is nothing but a result of chance. This statement, beyond its recklessness appearance, has an explanation consisting of three moments of existences that are determined by the roulette. The first one goes back to before we’re born. Have you ever thought of how many billions of chances were there when your parents’ genetic material mixed to create you? I, for instance, could’ve been blond, tall and smart. Or short and dumb. Or anything. But, somehow, I turned out to be me, out of what appear to be infinite chances of who I could’ve been. And this process follows no logic or intervention from our part: is the work of randomness. The second moment, chronologically, involves our environment. Where we’re born, who our parents are, and the rest of conditions that welcome us to this world are the sort of aspects I include in this side of this pyramidal die. The third and final moment is composed of the things that are choices in our lives. This is also a consequence of luck because the construction of ourselves is the outcome of the decisions we make, which have a luck component. That construction of ourselves has, as building blocks, our routines, our habits. Let’s say, one day, I decide I want to be very athletic. So, that same day, I go out to jog when, suddenly, a branch of a......

Luck of the Poor

...The Luck of the Poor A person in poverty, we tend to imagine is someone who is poor and cannot afford a roof over his head. However, poverty can be a relative term that can include more than just the destitute and homeless. The definition of poverty depends on who we ask the question, how it is understood and who responds. For example, for the average middleclass person, not being able to afford a first class ticket makes him feel poor and on the other hand being able to afford a meal may make the homeless man feel like a million dollars. The broad point here is that poverty can depends on what the person’s idea of subsistence is; his basic needs and what he feels deprived of. In the U.S. the poverty line sets the threshold of income at $ 21,200 dollars for a family of four. That amount is deemed necessary a family to meet minimal food, housing and other basic needs. No one wants to be poor, so how do people fall into poverty? A combination of factors than can be broadly divided into two categories can be blamed for poverty. Individual causes such as lack of responsibility and motivation, poor choices can lead to poverty. Structural causes such as lack of adequate health care, poor educational systems, lack of jobs, social and political structures that includes the exploitation by people in power. I believe that structural causes are more to blame for poverty than individual causes. Individual causes such as poor choices, health issues and conflicts can lead to poverty......

Luck Is a Matter of Preparation Meeting Opportunity.

...Luck has always been a word that can stir up a debate on whether or not it exists. Some people believe luck exists and there’s nothing you can do to change your failure or success. Yet there are others that believe the actions you partake in to reach many opportunities will determine success or failure. Personally I agree with the following notion by Oprah Winfrey that says “luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” My reasons for agreeing are because the actions you take will always determine your outcome and preparation is a great factor when faced with any and all opportunities. First, I agree with following notion by Oprah Winfrey which states “luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity,” because the actions you take will always determine your outcome. I believe this because when you want to get somewhere you are not just sitting there waiting on to come to you about it. I feel that by going out and being in control and being a go getter will always determine your outcome. For example, I wanted my family to have a better lifestyle than what I experienced, so I decided to obtain a college degree. While making this decision I couldn’t just lie around and expect to get accepted just from doing research. I had to apply myself during high school, being that I had to make good grades. In addition, I had to go out and fill out applications to various universities and constantly make phone calls to ensure I took the right actions to get to where I wanted......

Luck Is a Matter of Preparation

..."Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity." When Oprah Winfrey made this statement I believe she was trying to address those of us who believe that luck is just a matter of a good thing falling into one’s lap. But, frankly, any opportunity given must be ready to be received, hence, preparation. Good things happen to people every day, but unless that person is ready to make the best of it, the potential that the opportunity once had will never come to pass. Needless to say I agree with Ms. Winfrey and the intentions behind this quote. I especially believe, for many reasons, both personal and not, that people must stop waiting on things to happen for them and work for what they want. This is the only way we can truly become and create anything great. Personally, I am in the midst of living this quote. Having been out of school and working for the past couple of years, I have yet to make the impact on the world that I once dreamed of. Writing this essay and taking the previous parts of this entrance exam, I have taken my first steps in preparing myself for bigger, better, and brighter opportunities that I know are awaiting me. Not if, but when I am accepted into your school I will do even more preparation and soon my luck will change. It will change because I have allowed it to change. I will have allowed myself to become open to any opportunities I seek. Because without going to school and making the necessary preparations I now realize that I have limited......

...each candidate. The first candidate mentioned in the case is Liz who is 34 year old African-American. After analyzing her situation in the company and her personal life, it seems that in her case disadvantages outweighs her advantages to be considered as strong candidate. The only factor that could be considered an advantage would be the fact that she is African American and her promotion to the managerial level means she would be the first African American to be a manager at the level. Her academic credentials and job experience is not the plus point in fact those 2 factors might be even considered as the disadvantages since other competing candidates have far better academic qualification and longer job experience. And also to make the matter worst she has had family problems in the past that lead her to lead a single life with one child. The second candidate is Roy, who is 57 year old happy father and husband. He has been loyal to the company and his position in the company for past twenty years and has had the job experience of nearly thirty years. The fact that could play for him to be the favorite would be his time of retirement. He is retiring and he could get the sympathy vote to be promoted from the concerned people or person for the last time before he retires. Although he has had long job experience, the fact that he is now old to be handling the stress of the promotion and the greater responsibilities could play against him. Luck or Opportunity

...Luck or Opportunity "Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity” is a quote from Oprah Winfrey, a famous American talk show host. The speaker is trying to tell people that good preparation for opportunity is the key to be successful, not luck. Luck is really being ready for something, perhaps unconsciously, so that you recognize it when you see it. When whatever it is comes along, it will seem to be a stroke of luck, but in reality it is not luck at all. It is something you have strived and worked towards, maybe without even knowing it, so that when it presents itself it seems second nature. I agree with Winfrey because I believe that preparation is more important. My agreement is based on the following reasons. The first reason is that opportunity is very transient and rare, so we must grab it whenever we meet it. In my opinion, grabbing opportunity means to get ready and be well-prepared. Take Oprah Winfrey for example. Before she became a well-known national TV host, she worked in a local station for many years and had gone to uncountable interviews. Without her experiences, she could not have gotten the interview for national TV host and become successful. Second, preparation is always advantageous and never harmful to us. Preparation requires motivation, activity and carefulness. Those who most frequently experience outcomes viewed by society as unlucky live lives which exhibit little evidence of motivation, activity and care. When preparing for......

Luck Is a Matter of Preparation Meeting Opportunity

...“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” Luck per say is an opinion of things suddenly fallen into someone lap. I believe that the idea of it sounds great and it does happen to people. Know my understanding for being ready for luck to happen is a grand thought, but it is not the smartest way to go for being prepared in life. Being a prepared individual is by far the best way to be for reliability sake, but the opportunity for luck to just fall in your hands is a rather lower possibility for things to go your way. I do agree with the statement, but it is very hard for me to say it is true in the sense for everybody to be readily prepared for luck to fall in their lap. For instance is education when I was younger graduating in from high school I started working for Delta Airlines. I was trying to go to college around my shift but I did not do well. I was trying to do well in life, but I was not ready for the college at that time and I was not that convinced that I knew what I wanted to learn. Know in this instance I did not know how to get prepared for luck do to the fact that I did not know what it really was that I wanted to really do for my education. Then next time I tried to go to school was in 2010. I had graduated in 1996 so it had been a lot of time between me trying to go to school to be ready for luck to fall in my hands. This time I was mentally strong enough to proceed and do well in my grades and attitude towards school. I was trying...

A Stroke of Luck

...A stroke of Luck Life can be iniquitous, and the system can make some really unfair decisions. When you try to do the right things for other people, but you are unable to manage the situation. Then life feels wrongful. In this story written by Jeremy Madison in 2010 it is the exact case, when a girl does not get asylum in the country. The story takes place in Britain, and our main character is a boy called Max. The story is told from an omniscient narrator. The story starts with a flashback from Max’s childhood, where his father left him and his mother. That’s why Max is careless about what he got. For example he don’t care about his mother who loves him from the bottom of her heart. Furthermore he don’t care about his school. He’s not interested in homework and exams, and often he just bunks of. One day he met this girl called Ishraqi, and she turned his point of view. Ishraqi is an immigrant from Iran. Ishraqi’s parents got arrested back in Iran at an Anti-government demonstration. Ishraqi is just a few days from getting her General Certificate of Secondary Education, but before the exam something happens. Ishraqi is going with a form of interpreter called Alexs and she tries to keep Ishraqi in the country. The biggest theme in the history is to value the things you have, and Max is a good example. In the beginning he argues with his mother. He thinks that it’s some nonsense she tells about school, homework and exams, but after the meeting with Ishraqi everything......

Chance in Science

...The Role of Chance in Science “Chance” in science is a relatively common occurrence. Similar to life, scientists cannot ever be certain on results or outcomes that their experiments may bring. Scientists could be attempting to find specific results and part of the experimental process could actually lead to more answers. The article, “Discovery, Chance and the Scientific Method”, by Fran Slowiczek and Pamela Peters provides several examples that prove the same point. For example, if Luigi Galvani had not have noticed the frog legs jerking when the metals touched, the study of “neurophysiology and clinical neurology” wouldn’t have come to be known in 1791. Even though he did not identify the importance of the two metals, the observations he made eventually led to other discoveries like circuitry. Slowiczek and Peters wrote, “to have meaning, every observation or discovery must fit into a pre-existing pattern of ideas in the observer’s mind. Just as a word means little out of context, a new observation or discovery needs a proper context in which to fit in order to be most meaningful.” So an experiment or experimental mindset is needed to watch for possible “leads.” If you are not thinking about possibilities that occur from different steps in any experiment, you are not likely to make those “chance discoveries.” Your odds of a “chance discovery” also increase when you are well educated on what to look for or something that might be suspicious during an......

Success and Luck

...because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success”. Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position. INTRODUCTION: - Everyone wants to obtain success - Hard work is the most important factor bringing success, but we can’t deny the role of luck BODY - Success is not for one who is lazy and never wants to try, or someone depending too much on others. These people easily get failures - Hard working people: + Be confident in themselves, dedicated to their work => efficient people => succeed. Ex: If a student wants to pass the exam, he will have to study hard + Experience difficulties, know how to overcome obstacles => become independent, more determined. Try to make dream come true, have more motivation for success + Example: Stephen Hawking, almost completely paralyzed and mute, has many space researches. Author of bestseller “A brief history of time” (1988). Make a flight into space, achive zero grativity in 2007 - Luck: + In some way, help you establish successful achievements Example: You graduated from a famous University but were not shortlisted for the job vacancies at a big company. At that time your friend invited you to work in his company => Lucky => cornerstone for future success + If one doesn’t know how to keep or develop his luck => fail completely after all. Luck then becomes useless + Can’t control luck, so don’t depend entirely on......
