Mercutio Characterization In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Mercutio is a character who possesses the traits of being a comedian, being fearless, and being rude. The merging of these three characteristics brought a character that plays an imperative role in the play. He plays the role of Romeo’s close friend who eventually meets his demise after being in a sword fight with Tybalt. Romeo gets between the fight and the sword pierces Mercutio. Mercutio’s main characteristic in the play is that he adores joking around and making fun of others. In the play, he takes pleasure from making fun of the Nurse, Tybalt, and even Romeo. In Act 2 Scene 2 lines 125-130 sings about the Nurse being “an old hare hoar:” He is basically saying that she is really old and some other inappropriate statements in a witty way. In Act 2 Scene lines 19-35, Mercutio also makes fun of Tybalt. He says “More than Prince of Cats” when he is talking with Benvolio about Tybalt. He says that Tybalt plays too much by the book. Mercutio’s comedic trait is noticeable in the play. Another trait important to Mercutio’s personality in the play is his fearlessness. In Act 3 Scene 1 Line 73, he says “Tybalt, you ratcatcher will you walk?” He is trying to start a swordfight with Tybalt to defend Romeo’s honor since Romeo would not accept Tybalt’s challenge. His fearlessness brings him to his doom during the swordfight when Romeo gets between them which caused an enraged Romeo to kill Tybalt. Another attribute that becomes evident in Mercutio’s personality is that he is actually quite rude and has many witty remarks. In Act 2 Scene 4 Line 101, he says “Good Peter to hide her face; for the fan’s the fairer face” when he is talking to Peter about the Nurse. He’s that her fan is better looking than her face so peter should give her the fan. She takes much offense from this. In Act 2 Scene…...

...An essay is usually a short piece of writing. It is often written from an author's personal point of view. Essays can be literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article and a short story. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population provide counterexamples. It is very difficult to define the genre into which essays fall. Aldous Huxley, a leading essayist, gives guidance on the subject: Like the novel, the essay is a literary Abstract This article will examine the reasons why it is important both linguistically and psychologically to build a vocabulary quickly when learning a foreign language. The article asserts that very little can be achieved or learned in a foreign language with a small vocabulary and that by building a sizable vocabulary quite quickly one can soon be able to function adequately. Romeo and Juliet is an engaging play because of all the characters, the narrative techniques and the Theme. Romeo is a guy that will take a risk and be dramatic or romantic at that moment. In this moment Romeo kisses Juliet, and he just met her. Next, Friar Laurence is a sneaky character. He’s sneaky because he can makes plans and they are very smart plans. “Hold then, go home be merry. Give consent to Marry Paris. Wednesday is tomorrow. Tomorrow night look that thou lie alone let not the nurse lie with thee in thy chamber.” (4.1.92). Friar Laurence is telling Juliet a plan so that she can pretend to be dead and not marry Paris. Also, the Nurse is a dramatic character and she cares for Juliet. “She’s dead, deceased, she’s dead, alack the day”. Romeo and Mercutio

...Romeo and Mercutio Opposing Opinions of Love In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the views of love believed by Romeo contrast sharply with the views of Mercutio. Romeo's character seems to suffer from a type of agitated misery. He is in love with his own sorrow, quickly captivated and easily crushed again on a passionate roller coaster of emotion. Mercutio, is much more real-world and level headed. His perceptions are clear and quick, characterized by exact thought and careful evaluation. Romeo, true to his character begins his entrance in the play by wallowing in his depression over Rosaline who does not love him back: ROMEO (Act I Scene I Lines 185-193) Why, such is love's transgression. Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast, Which thou wilt propagate, to have it prest With more of thine: this love that thou hast shown Doth add more grief to too much of mine own. Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes; Being vex'd a sea nourish'd with lovers' tears: What is it else? a madness most discreet, A choking gall and a preserving sweet. (R & J) The references to "fire" and "sea" are signs that these are lines of passion rather than love. Romeo sees himself as subjective to his situation, "Doth add more grief to too much of mine own." and is swallowed up in his self-pity as well. Romeo is only forgiven these faults because he is young,......

...With close reference to Act 3 scene 1, explore the language and stage directions used to present the theme of conflict in Romeo and Juliet. A guide to writing your essay: This is simply a suggested structure. Remember to use the PEE structure in each paragraph. Use the title to focus your essay. Introduction • How important a theme is conflict to the play? • Where else in the play have we seen conflict? • Link these ideas to how conflict is presented in Act 3 Scene 1. Paragraph one • Irony- before this scene R&j marry. The Friar hopes this will reunite the two families! • Pathetic fallacy- repetition of words to do with heat- something is going to happen, tempers will be lost! • Warnings about the Capulets. • Mercutio tells of all the fights Benvolio has been in- words to do with conflict- foreshadows (predicts) the future fight. • Structure of a tragedy- this is the mid-way point. Paragraph Two • Tybalt’s entrance- highly dramatic. Think about what we know of Tybalt’s character. • Tybalt uses false politeness- looking for Romeo- tension, fight will ensue. • Tybalt and Mercutio fight with their words. • Does Mercutio draw his sword? How would the audience react? • How does Benvolio take control of conflict? (lines 49-52) - Are there any issues raised regarding a public/private conflict? (Lines 49-54). ...paragraph. The idea is to allow the author to develop an argument and support it with ideas. • Stated first and last The topic sentence appears both at the beginning and at the end. It is a technique that is used by authors in cases where the content of the paragraph is complex. The topic sentence that appears at the end aims to remind the readers about the content in the paragraph so that they do not loose focus. • Stated implied This is a situation where an author states an obvious topic sentence to avoid being direct. In this case, the topic sentence is not conspicuous. The readers have to read in between the lines to identify the hidden topic sentence. 13. Review Essay on Romeo and Juliet

...Review essay on Romeo and Juliet On 27 April 2012, I watched Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. It was directed by Ivan Heng from W!LD RICE. It brought laughter and tears to me, from the witty scenes to the tragic parts. This version was an exciting, refreshing, contemporary twist of the classic love story. The set, costumes, music, sound and casting gave this play a whole new spin to it. I felt the casting was perfect. The main characters, Romeo, played by Hansel Tan and Juliet, played by Julie Wee, really brought out the deep emotions of their characters. Their chemistry was amazing and it wasn’t hard to imagine them as star-crossed teenage lovers. Romeo’s character was strong, with Hansel pulling of his intense feelings brilliantly, such as the part in Act 3, Scene 3 that starts with “Tis torture, and not mercy” when he talks about being banished. Juliet’s transformation from a wide-eyed girl into a self-assured, loyal, and capable woman was well portrayed throughout the play. One memorable character was Nurse, played by Neo Swee Lin. Though I felt she that at some points her Singaporean accent would emerge, it somehow worked to make the character funnier and she injected much humour into the piece with her frequently inappropriate remarks and speeches. Act two, Scene three, where she meets Romeo was especially funny when she kept going for Romeo’s chest. It was hilarious! Every scene kept the audience engaged, from the beautiful, intimate scene where Romeo......
