The structure of Washington, DC.'s city government has changed several times since the City of Washington was officially granted a government in 1802. From 1802 to 1812, the mayor was appointed by the President of the United States. Washington's first mayor was Robert Brent, appointed in 1802 by Thomas Jefferson. As time progress, the city's mayors were selected by a city council, popularly elected, etc. The purpose of a mayor varies across the country. Some cities are run by city councils who appoint a city manager. Others are run by a mayor, who is usually elected by the citizens. Mayors may have strong or weak powers, depending on the position given by the council. A mayor with strong powers makes executive decisions and has veto power over council decisions. On the other hand, when the city council makes executive decisions, the mayor has no veto power. From 2007 to 2011, Adrian Malik Fenty served as the sixth mayor of the District of Columbia. Many believe Fenty was an outstanding mayor and that the work he completed is legendary. Currently, Muriel Elizabeth Bowser serves as the eighth Mayor of the District of Columbia. Although Fenty benefited the nation’s capital in tremendous ways, Mayor Bowser has attempt to escape his shadows by decreasing the unemployment rate, increasing police presence in communities, and creating pathways for the middle class. During Fenty’s tenure, he added police officers to the streets and expanded community policing vision. For example, "Beefing Up" which is the policy of accepting anonymous text message tips from residents to cut down on any retaliation. According to Paul Wagner, reporter from FOX5 News “The homicide rate in the District dropped 25% in 2009; the homicide closure rate rose to 70%”. It is safe to say that, Adrian Fenty made the District a safer place and gave residents opportunities to participate in doing so. Also, Wagner stated “With Fenty, the homicides were at their lowest level since 1964, and that both violent crimes and property crimes had experienced a double-digit decline”. Not only were Fenty’s actions successful, but they were legendary because he made changes that the District had not seen for several years. The Fenty Administration awarded over $2 million from federal stimulus dollars for workforce development grants. The grants supported work skill trainings to help prepare and gain connections for jobs. “In 2010, The District of Columbia continues to show growth in the number of available jobs… it is ranked third in the nation for the largest percentage increase in new jobs “(DC Gov). Fenty not only provided many with jobs, but he made sure that everyone was experienced before walking in the door. To decrease the unemployment rate, Fenty thought of plans to benefit his representation, while essentially helping others. Lastly, Fenty renovated multiple libraries, parks and recreation centers. “Under Fenty, 16 neighborhood and school playgrounds were opened and nine play courts and fields were completed… thousands of affordable housing units were established or renovated “(LiquiSearch). Fenty modernized places within communities that a vast amount of children and adults rely on. In addition, Fenty implemented the "Housing First" program. The program provided permanent housing support for the city’s homeless. Throughout Fenty’s tenure, he worked extremely hard to assure that the District’s community was safe and that beneficial places within communities were modernized. Also, Fenty insisted in making sure that residents were interactive in having a healthy community. He not only provided many with jobs, but he made sure that people were able to have experience before starting the job. Everyone could benefit from Fenty’s contributions in a certain way and the contributions that he made changes that the District had not seen in a long time. Recently, Mayor Bowser decided to put more police officers on the streets in neighborhoods affected by violent crime. “There have been 103 slayings in the District of Columbia this year, a 43 percent increase over this point last year”( FOX5 News). This goes to show that, violence in the District has dramatically increased and severe actions must take place. However, residents did not agree with Bowser’s plan. Also, the article states, “Shouting "Jobs, not jails!" and "More police is not the answer!" the protesters accused the mayor of failing to address the root causes of violence”. Many residents disagreed with Mayor Bowser’s action because they believe that the primary cause of violence is not having jobs to occupy everyone, especially the youth, and that having police officers work overtime in brutal neighborhoods would increase violence instead of decrease. In solution, Mayor Bowser decides to extend the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), as a beginning to providing jobs, which decreases the unemployment rate. Aaron C. Davis , reporter from The Washington Post states, “Bowser redirects $5 million in taxpayer money to expand the District’s summer youth jobs program to age 24”. Yes, Bowser’s plan will decrease the unemployment rate, occupy a vast amount of the youth, and provide work experience. However, the program only last for six weeks, and providing a temporary, basic- level skill job will not benefit anyone, above eighteen in the future. Any male or female, over eighteen should be provided with a full-time, age appropriate job. Yes, temporally decreasing the unemployment rate, and funding summer job programs that expose more youth to the real world is acceptable and boosts Bowser representation. However, in reality, is not beneficial for the extended age group. Currently, Bowser planned to close the city’s main homeless shelter, D.C. General Hospital, and replace it with smaller shelter facilities around the city, in each ward. Ryan McDermott, reporter from The Washington Times, states “D.C. residents disagree with Mayor Muriel Bowser’s plan to put a homeless shelter in every ward, criticizing not only the proposed sites but also the lack of transparency in the planning process”. It will take plenty of time to build shelter facilities in every ward. Residents fear that closing D.C. General before building shelter facilities will put tons of homeless back on the streets, adding to the amount of homeless already in their community. Also, Mayor Bowser’s lack of communication about future plans destroys the public’s trust in her. Residents simply ask for concrete plans, that the community is part of its process, but she repeatedly fails to do so. In conclusion,…...

...MULTINATIONAL MANAGEMENT COURSE OUTLINE (2007-09) The globalization of the world economy and the related liberalization of the Indian economy are radically changing the business landscape. The international capital flows into India have increased several-fold since the onset of liberalization; Indian companies are becoming multinationals in their own right--a trend certain to intensify in the coming years. All in all, multinationals are becoming more ubiquitous as an instrument of economic and business activity. The business leaders of tomorrow need to be trained today in the unique requirements of multinational management. It is toward this objective that the proposed course in Multinational Management is being offered. The course combines a number of sub-disciplines from the fields of social sciences and business administration. It is broad in sweep; its depth is pitched at the PGP level. The overall course is divided into four modules, as follows: Module I--International Business Context-- provides an historical perspective on globalization and presents a viewpoint on its future direction. It also covers some of the globalization drivers including international trade and investment and how they spawn multinational activity. The phenomenon of domestic and cross-border corruption and bribery, often an inherent part of such activities, is discussed. Finally, it postulates how countries and companies can develop competitive advantage and defines the......

...Jaipur Engineering College & Research Centre, Jaipur Manual Of TCP/IP Programming Lab (7CP8) Session 2007-2008 Computer Engineering Department Prepared By: Mahesh Jangid cc Exercise No. 1 AIM: Study of Data Communication System, Connectionless and connection oriented service, programming with TCP and UDP. Theory: - [pic] Networking Basics • computers running on the Internet communicate to each other using either Transmission Control (TCP) or the User Datagram (UDP) protocol • when we write Java programs that communicate over the network, we are programming at the application layer • however, to decide which Java classes our programs should use, we need to understand how TCP and UDP differ UDP (User Datagram Protocol) • connectionless - sends independent packets of data, called datagram, from one computer to another with no guarantees about arrival • each time a datagram is sent, the local and receiving socket address need to be sent as well TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) • connection-oriented - provides a reliable flow of data between two computers _ data sent from one end of the connection gets to the other end in the same order • in order to communicate using TCP protocol, a connection must first be established between the pair of sockets • once two sockets have been connected, they can be used to transmit data in both (or either one of the) directions UDP vs. TCP: Which......

...year as Food Inc. which had already changed my perspective on what I choose to eat along with a couple other influences. This film was even more graphic on where meat actually comes from, how it is mass produced and how the animals are treated. Actually seeing the cattle bathe in their own feces will definitely make me think twice before I choose a steak sandwich for one of my cheat meals. I also had no idea how chicken farms were privately ran under contracts with large industries and after all the work they only get paid $18,000. I also had no idea that E. coli was caused putting cows on an all corn diet and could be easily reversed by putting them back on a grass fed diet but instead they treat the meat with ammonia to kill the E. coli. Mmmmm I love ammonia in my steak!!! It truly is unbelievable that the Government and FDA allow these companies to get away with whatever they want when food should be at the top of their priority list seeing that heart disease and cancer and increasing every year. I am glad this assignment was available for extra credit but think everyone should be forced to watch and learn the information provided in this film. ----------------------- THE MOVIE FOOD, INC. ...When Carol Teinchek and Bruce Marshall first started Sundown Bakery, the business was fairly simple. Carol ran the shop up front, while Bruce ran the bakery and ordered supplies. When the business began to grow, Carol hired two part-time clerks to help out in the shop. Marina had moved to the country 2 years ago from El Salvador, and Kim was a newly arrived Korean who was working his way through college. Bruce hired Maurice, a French Canadian, as an assistant. The ovens were soon running 24 hours a day, supervised by Maurice, who was now master baker, and two assistants on each of three shifts. Marina and Kim supervised the shop, since Carol was usually too busy managing general sales distribution to spend much time with customers. Bruce still spent 3 or 4 hours a day in the bakery whenever he could get out of his office, but he spent most of that time coordinating production and solving problems with Maurice. Within the next year, Sundown expanded from its original location, adding two new shops as well as two kiosks in local malls. Carol and Bruce hired a new operations manager, Hans Mikelson, who had formerly been regional manager of a national chain of coffee shops. Mikelson had plenty of new ideas about how to operate an expanding business: He had a Web site created, added an extensive range of drinks and meal items to the menu, and instituted two dress codes—one for all counter help and another for kitchen......

...In other words, the population is very large, making a census or a complete enumeration of all the values in the population impractical or impossible. The sample represents a subset of manageable size. Samples are collected and statistics are calculated from the samples so that one can make inferencesor extrapolations from the sample to the population. This process of collecting information from a sample is referred to as sampling. The data sample may be drawn from a population without replacement, in which case it is a subset of a population; or with replacement, in which case it is a multisubset. A complete sample is a set of objects from a parent population that includes ALL such objects that satisfy a set of well-defined selection criteria. For example, a complete sample of Australian men taller than 2m would consist of a list of every Australian male taller than 2m. But it wouldn't include German males, or tall Australian females, or people shorter than 2m. So to compile such a complete sample requires a complete list of the parent population, including data on height, gender, and nationality for each member of that parent population. In the case of human populations, such a complete list is unlikely to exist, but such complete samples are often available in other disciplines, such as complete magnitude-limited samples of astronomical objects. An unbiased (representative) sample is a set of objects chosen from a complete sample using a selection process that does not......

...Running head: ETHNIC GROUPS AND DISCRIMINATION SCOTTISH 1 Ethnic Groups and Discrimination ETHNIC GROUPS AND DISCRIMINATION SCOTTISH 2 The first Scots began coming to the New World in the early 1600's, Emigration picked up during the Cromwellian Civil War in Britain, as many Scots from both sides were transported to the American Colonies in the mid-1600’s. The Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745 also saw numbers of Scotsmen transported to America, as did the Highland Clearances which came somewhat later. Scottish emigrants who had gone to Northern Ireland as colonists of the Ulster plantations in the first half of the 16th century also immigrated to America in the early 1700's. These people, who were referred to as the "Scotch-Irish" were by far the most numerous group of Scottish Colonists to come to America. Between 1715 and 1776 some 250,000 of them arrived, mainly in the Chesapeake Bay region, and settled all along the east coast, particularly in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, North and South Carolina and later in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and beyond. A second wave of Scottish immigration came during the late 1800's and most of these Scots settled in the northeastern U.S. in the larger industrial cities, and included such worthies as Andrew Carnegie and Alexander Graham Bell. (Craig Cockburn) Some were transported; they...
