* TEHRAN: An Iranian schoolteacher has innovated an amusing way of encouraging young children to say their daily prayers — robotics. * LOS ANGELES: Disney is launching a digital movies app that allows fans to store movie purchases online and play them back over Apple devices and computers. * TOKYO: A tiny personal computer that is worn on the ear and can be controlled with the blink of an eye or the click of a tongue is being tested in Japan.
The 17-gram (0.59-ounce) wireless device has bluetooth capability and is equipped with a GPS, compass, gyro-sensor, battery, barometer, speaker and microphone.
Wearable computing is thought by many commentators to be the next big thing in technology, with products such as Google Glass at the forefront.
The device, known at the moment as the "Earclip-type Wearable PC" has a microchip and data storage, enabling users to load software, said engineer Kazuhiro Taniguchi of Hiroshima City University.
Its designs are based on traditional "ikebana" flower arrangements.
"We have made this with the basic idea that people will wear it in the same way they wear earrings," Taniguchi told AFP in a recent interview as he showcased a black prototype.
The system, which developers are hoping to have ready for Christmas 2015, can be connected to an iPod or other gadget and would allow the user to navigate through software programmes using facial expressions, such as a raised eyebrow, a stuck-out tongue, a wiggle of the nose or by clenching teeth.
The device uses infrared sensors that monitor tiny movements inside the ear, whichdiffer depending on how the eyes and mouth move.
Because the user does not have to move either hand, its developers say it can serve as "a third hand" for everyone from caregivers to rock-climbers, motorbike riders to astronauts, as well as people with disabilities. "Supposing I climb a mountain, look at the sky at night and see a bright star up there, it could tell me what it is," Taniguchi said.
"As it knows what altitude I'm at, which direction I'm looking and at what angle, it could tell me, 'The bright star you are seeing now is Sirius'."
Using a smartphone to connect to the Internet would mean you could be automatically put in touch with people in faraway places who are doing the same thing as you.
"This could connect you with a person who is looking at the same star at a remote place at the same time," enabling the people to swap impressions, Taniguchi said.
A second version of the device might be pressed into use to help relatives keep an eye on elderly family in greying Japan.
The earpiece, which could also function as a hearing aid, could monitor the wearer's health, including their pulse and body temperature, while logging how often they eat and sneeze, offering early warning of the onset of illness.
An onboard accelerometer could tell when the user falls and instruct the smartphone to pass information to relatives, or call an ambulance based on GPS data.
Tests are being carried out in Hiroshima, with the aim of commercialising the device from April 2016.
US chipmaker Intel has stepped up its investment in wearable technology with the acquisition of Basis Science, a firm known for its health tracking services and devices. Basis Science is known for its health-tracking device, the Basis band, which monitors the user's heart rate and calorie-burning, among other things. * Mr. Chen wants to shift BlackBerry’s focus toward its smaller software and services business. ...News Summaries #2 Hope Grows for Asian Stocks By DANIEL INMAN In the past few years, analysts have been putting the Asian stocks down, stating that the values of the stocks will most likely go down. However, recently, particularly late 2012 and early 2013, stocks have been on the rise. China’s fourth quarter gross domestic product yielded a growth rate of 7.9%, the first year-over-year rise by Chinese in two years. Analysts are predicting even greater increases in share values for the coming quarters. A decline in raw-material costs, from businesses rebuilding inventories and from lower interest rates, is reaping benefits for the Chinese companies. ICICI Bank Profit Beats Forecast By NUPUR ACHARYA India’s largest nonstate lender exceeded expectations with a 30% jump in its third-quarter net profit due to a high demand for loans. The net profit rose to 22.50 billion rupees, up from 17.28 billion rupees last year and surpassing the forecast of 20.89 billion rupees. The cause of this spike in net profit is due to a strong demand for loans from borrowers during India’s main festival season. The bank is boosting retail-loan business by pushing secured products while remaining cautious on unsecured loans. The ICICI bank expects to end the fiscal year with a massive 20% loan growth, and analysts expects even more growth to be coming up. ...In The News - Amazon Signs $600M Cloud Infrastructure Deal With CIA At first glance, when I saw this article, I was more curious than anything, and had no thought of how this piece of news could be blended into the BUSN-412 discussion thread. However, after reading through the article, it became apparent to me that Amazon’s deal with the CIA was still a business transaction, albeit with the Federal Government. My thoughts began to race as I pondered how this would be different from any other business decision reached by such an enormous company like Amazon. After all, they are a multi-billion-dollar company, who are in business to make money. In an article published by CRN, a very reliable technology news organization, unconfirmed reports state that Amazon has reached a 10-year, $600 million cloud computing deal with Amazon. Amazon, if confirmed, and already a major player in the building of Cloud Infrastructure, will have scored a very large victory in the tech world. With such a sizeable deal in the works, one could speculate about some of what went on behind closed doors. As it may relate to our week two discussion thread on SWOT, I would speculate that the CIA did its own SWOT analysis of Amazon. I am sure that the CIA would not have even considered Amazon for this venture, before scrutinizing Amazon from top to bottom. For the business managers that were involved in this process, it should have been the standard way to conduct business, save for the fact it was......

...Business Policy 3/15/14 The article that I chose to talk about is about Apple and Samsung; they have both been competing to be number one in the market for phones, TVs, and now watches and new advances in technology. Apple has a huge a range of customers who are very loyal to them and that are what had made them so successful in expanding their business. Samsung is also very successful because of the advances that they have been making with Android and the new Tizen strategy. Tizen is a new form of technology that allows manufactures to turn phones in watches and other everyday items. Tizen and Android are very similar and most people cannot tell them apart if the systems are switched. Apple has a huge disadvantage with Samsung because they do not move as fast as Samsung. Samsung’s disadvantage is that China can easily make knockoffs of the brand and sell them for as low as $35 compared to $700. * Samsung’s marketing strategy is to cover everything that they can internationally, spending 4 billion dollars. * Apple’s business strategy is to keep its loyal customers happy with the products that they currently own. * Samsung’s business strategy is to keep the customers that they have while trying to gain new customers. * Samsung and Apple’s main challenges are environmental because people care about what their phones can do. Which means applications like Facebook, Instagram, and Candy crush? * Another area that they are competing in is the tablet market,......

It was presented by Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale and the headlines of each individual story were read out in the studio. This was then followed by images and graphics appearing on screen as the voice-overs of the news presenters could clearly be heard explaining the story. The first story that was covered was about how the Vitamin B could potentially benefit people that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The first part of this story used graphics on the screen as well as the use of voice-overs to narrate what the diagrams and statistics on screen meant. The story then progressed into interviews with experts on the matter, all of a medical background and with extensive knowledge in Alzheimer’s disease and also the Vitamin B. These interviews were taken in medical rooms with clear equipment and charts visible on camera the whole time to reiterate the issue. ...The company “Nutiva” did a re-branding campaign the beginning of 2014 for its product line with new labels. Nutiva is the world’s leading brand of all-organic hemp foods, coconut oil, red palm oil and chia seeds. Their logo is: “Nourishing People and Planets. Revolutionizing the way the world eats”. They are a values-driven brand, dedicated to providing nourishing food and supplements. The beginning of this year, they launched a clean simple new look to the labels of their products which hadn’t had a packaging change in 15 years. ...In the News Apple has revealed a new promotional material that lets its users have the ability to switch between major mobile carriers for their data plans. Apple will now ship out in their new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 a built-in sim card that allows users to purchase wireless service on the spot. Previous ipads have always had the ability to let you hop between carriers just by swapping out the sim card; however, Apple has simplified this process further with one sim card that lets you hop onto whichever carriers is listed on their iOS. These carriers include AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S., and EE in the U.K. Apple does plan to expand the list of global carriers in the future. Why does this matter? Well I think this really takes the carriers out of the retail loop and makes it easier for Apple users to be able to switch seamlessly between the three major U.S. carriers for on the go data plans. It makes the carriers a lot closer to the interchangeable pipes that they’re afraid of seeing because it effectively lessens the powers of the mobile carriers since they rely on their control of the retail sales and service channels to prevent customers from switchovers and to be able to upsell additional products. Interestingly enough, Verizon has opted out of this new Apple sim so far, which shows the disproportionate strength of Verizon in our market as compared to the other three carriers. Verizon thinks that they have enough market power to tell Apple what to......

...News The News is a wonderful and scary thing at the same time. I personally steer clear of the news as it tends to blow matters way out of proportions and with being in the military I rather be briefed on things of national security by my superiors vice the local news that only gets pebbles from the locals. I think that the news can be good at times, but in my experiences it tends to stress society out way more than it needs to be. An example of this is I have been to Bahrain numerous times, and all my mother would see on the television is riots and unruly behavior there. I on the other hand did not watch the news, got the security brief from my superiors and carried on my mission. While I was there it was nothing as what my mother and the news had depicted. Every time I have been there it has been peaceful and the locals have always been so very nice. Audience The intended audience was originally for locals, as it was broadcasted on the local news channels. The written news article I chose was from New York Times. Since the incident occurred in Phoenix, AZ, I purposefully chose the New York Times as it is located across the country. This choice makes for a better comparison of data from across state lines. Credible MSNBC and the New York Times are both credible sources that individuals rely on everyday to hear anything from the weather to local in international news. Both of these reports were similar in nature. The New York Times tends to go more in depth, so their...
