How businesses are organised to achieve their purpose P3
Organisations such as Tesco and Apple are organised in structures, they are organised in structures because it is to divide up work; so that the workers know what they are doing and to establish lines of control. In the organisational structure the lines connected together tells us that they report to someone that they need to report to, for example the board of directors has the highest power in the business. In the organisational structure a line is connected from the board of directors to general manager.
Tesco’s purpose is to sell products from their supermarket, also to advertise what they would sell. Also what they offer in their stores.
Tesco Organisational Structure

This business is broken down into sections, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is in charge of the four important sectors of the business of Tesco. Director of Finance, Director of Human Resources, Director of Marketing and the Director of Operations.
Director of Finance – this department takes care of the budget, they work with all departments to plan and manage their budgets.
Director of Human Resources – HR department takes care of the customers’ needs and their problems.
Director of Marketing – Marketing team work with the management and the sales team, the director of marketing oversees development and implementation of support materials and services for chapters in the area of marketing. The Director of Marketing works with the board of directors, executive director and other management staff.
The Director of Operations- also known as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is known to be one of the highest positions in a business. The COO is responsible for daily operation of the company. The COO works alongside the CEO, the COO of the company is like the vice president of the company.
This business is broken down into sections because, it is to divide up work so that everyone in the business knows their role what to do. And with every one of the employees doing different things in their jobs, if they do it well everything can come together.
The mission statement for Tesco is that they want to create value for customers to earn their lifetime loyalty. They also infer that they deliver this through value, no one tries harder for customers. They lastly say in their statement “to treat people how we like to be treated”.
The aims and objectives for Tesco are that Tesco want to outshine their competitors, maintain being the number one retail company in the United Kingdom and to maximise their profit.
Tesco’s mission statement is really important for them to succeed. In order to succeed their mission statement they need to have aims and objectives to complete. This business knows in order to complete the mission statement which is a big statement to accomplish they need to work on the small things first. The aims and objectives also have to be realistic.
A SMART objective would be really important for Tesco so they can stand a chance of completing their aims and objectives to complete their mission statement. SMART stands for:
S- Specific: there is a clear definition of what you are trying to achieve.
M- Measurable: this means that the achievement can be looked at.
A- Achievable: a target set that can be reached if you stretch a little, because Tesco is the number one retail company in the UK it can be achievable to maintain being number one.
R- Realistic: this means that the target is sensible so that you stand a chance.

Apple’s Organisational Structure
Apple’s purpose is to delight customers, stakeholders and shareholders.
This organisational structure is split in sections just like the Tesco organisational structure. We have the CEO Tim Cook and then below the CEO we have all the Senior Vice Presidents of their own departments such as the General Counsel, Software Engineering, Internet Software Services, Technologies, Worldwide Marketing, Industrial Design, Hardware Engineering and the Operations Department. They also have the Chief Financial Officer. This business is broken into sections because all these Senior Vice Presidents are the boss of their own departments, it’s to divide up work just as I referred to Tesco, so that everyone can do different things towards their job. Apple’s mission statement is “Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.” This mission statement from Apple doesn’t sound like a mission statement, it is just a list of products from their company. This implies that Apple cannot come up with any mission statements ever since the most talked about CEO passed away. The aims and objectives of Apple are to sell products to be able to gain value from shareholders. This business will strategically plan a way around their mission statement by just simply selling their products that have been currently made. A SMART objective for Apple would help them even though their former owner; Steve Jobs, they just need to keep moving forward by selling the products they can and brainstorm on what new gadget they can produce. Every single department of the company work towards the same objectives, but everyone needs to play their part in the right way. In order to complete the objective different things need to be completed for things to fall in place. So far overall without Steve Jobs things are going good for Apple, their iPhones are very popular around our society, they also still seem like the number one tech brand in the world.

The type of structure that Apple has is a hierarchical, on the top is the CEO Tim Cook then below him is all the Senior Vice Presidents of their departments. Tesco also have a hierarchical structure, on top of the chain is the CEO then it drops to the directors of the Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Operations. Many organisations fail to reach their full potential simply because the people lower down do not share the vision of the leaders or understand how their own efforts contribute to overall success, this does not apply to Apple because in every department, they share the vision of what is right for the business and for the customers. Clarifying your people’s objectives is the next step to improving their performance. This also applies to Tesco.

Apple’s Departments
The finance department for Apple, deals with the company’s money, their market value made more than 337 billion dollars, in early August 2011. Accountants deal with the finance department, they would send this information to the CEO Tim Cook then they can decide on what they want to spend the money on.
Human Resources is responsible for recruiting the most talented people in the world, helping them develop new skills, and supporting them throughout their careers. From benefits to training, communications to employee relations, HR keeps our employees engaged so that we can continue to create exceptional products and customer experiences.
The production department provide Apple’s online sites and applications with features and functions as they coordinate and inspire cross-functional teams of engineers, project managers, merchandisers and designers.
The Marketing department of Apple willing to go the extra mile, to maintain themselves as being the best technologic gadget company. The Marketing department has a passion for innovation and an uncompromising commitment to bringing great products to market.

Tesco’s Departments
Tesco employs specialist's accountants for its finance functions Management accounting department, this is where they plan their finance for future periods; Tesco also plans to set and allocate budgets to their departments. Tesco plans to make predictions about what should happen in the coming months. They look at their cash flow forecasts, what they have incoming and what they have outgoing should happen. Tesco also looks at how many goods they need to cover their costs.

The human resources department which is known as the support service to Tesco they do various types of actives such as helping a new store prepare for opening day, launching a new clothing range, producing training to help colleagues give warm and friendly service to customers and making sure our cafes and restaurants comply with health and safety requirements.

The marketing department is made up of areas such as local and stores marketing, price and promotions, brand marketing as well as working closely with the customer/site research team to understand customers and trends.

The information technology department make good use of technology, when you want to check out the products that want to be bought, instead of going to the till for the shopkeeper to check out your stuff you can use the self-checkout scan. This way you can checkout your products faster than going to the till, this is an example of how Tesco use their technology to make customers happy.…...
