...INFORMAL PROPOSAL A Sample Informal Proposal Below you will find a sample proposal asking for new pencil sharpeners for a small private grade school.  After each section, we'll provide a commentary to explain how what has been written works as part of a proposal.     The Header To: Rev. Mark Smith From: Nicole Johnson Date: March 10, 2011   Subject: A proposal to purchase new pencil sharpeners for the classrooms of St. Mary’s School  Purpose I write this letter to propose a solution to a recurring problem at St. Mary’s School.  The problem is that the pencil sharpeners in the classrooms are very old and do not work effectively anymore.  Students and teachers continually become frustrated because it is difficult to sharpen a pencil with the current sharpeners, and pencils that are sharp are crucial for effective learning. I suggest that we order new pencil sharpeners for each classroom so that the students will have pencils that work well and will therefore be able to write without the frustration of worn down pencil points. * Commentary On the Purpose: Because the audience is the pastor of a church that has a grade school, and because the pastor is not using the classrooms in the school every day, he may not know how bad the pencil sharpeners are.  Thus, the problem is stated clearly at the beginning in the purpose section of the proposal Problem of Ineffective Pencil Sharpeners There are 217 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade at St.......

Eco Pencil

...INTRODUCTION Pencil is a writing or drawing instrument consisting of a thin stick of pigment (usually graphite, but can also be colored pigment or charcoal) and clay, usually encased in a thin wood cylinder, though paper and plastic sheaths are also used, ferrules and end-plugs. These days, typical yellow writing pencils and children’s coloring pencils are generally considered to be a commodity. The wood cased pencils produced by pencil manufacturers are the most common type of pencils. The industry has long been characterized by a high degree of international trade, particularly in the supply of base raw materials or component parts needed to produce pencils. It is said to have been difficult to transport for it came from different parts of the world. The wood-casing pencils are generally the most expensive raw material component of a finished pencil. While pencil manufacturers strive to minimize the cost of producing the pencils and to sell all for more than the cost in order to achieve a profit, there can be alternative raw materials that can maintain the desired quality level and quantity of production of these pencils. And in connection with this, the proponents want to make use of used papers in substitute for the major component of pencil which is the cedar wood. Eco pencils are said to be environmental friendly because we will have no trees to chop, no wood slates to grind and no hexagonal shape to cut by grinding wood. Each is made from one page of recycled paper...

Pop: Pencils of Promise

...Melissa Eder 4/1/2013 Persuasive Speech “Pencils of Promise: Take action for PoP” On December 2012, Sophia Bush came to Panama to spend her holiday break. While she was here in Panama some friends saw her and took photos with her and posted them on instagram and as I checked Sophia Bush’s instagram profile, I saw a lot of photos and ads supporting the “Pencils of Promise” organization. That’s when I realized that the main reason she came here, to Panama, was to give poor children presents and food, and to see how schools are here, in order to build new schools or improve the ones we already have through the “Pencils of Promise” organization. That same day I did some online research to see what was this “Pencils of Promise” organization is. Pencils of Promise believes every child should have access to quality education. They create schools, programs, and global communities around the common goal of education for all. This organization was founded in 2008 by Adam Braun, a college student who was backpacking across the globe. “It began with a question. A small boy begging in the streets of India. “What do you want most in the world” I asked. The answer: A pencil.” Pencils of Promise focuses on building strong structures and sustainable education programs. By forming long-lasting, collaborative relationships with communities. They increase access to quality education and positively impact students and parents in high-need communities. At......

Poem

...when I wake. pencil I am a little pencil That made of wood and lead My head is long and pointed My body is smooth and red I once was long and handsome But now I soon must die? I like to write quite nicely But master does not try He treats me very badly And often shaves my head He cut's me so unkindly That I must soon be dead? He sucks me too I hate it And put me in the ink Have I no cause to grumble Just tell me what you think Pencil My drawing teacher said: Look, think, make a mark. Look, I told myself. And waited to be marked. Clouds are white but they darken with rain. Even a child blurs them back to little woolies on a hillside, little bundles without legs. Look, my teacher would surely tell me, they’re nothing like that. Like that: the lie. Like that: the poem. She said: Respond to the heaviest part of the figure first. Density is form. That I keep hearing destiny is not a mark of character. Like pilgrimage once morphed to mirage in a noisy room, someone so earnest at my ear. Then marriage slid. Mir-aage, Mir-aage, I heard the famous poet let loose awry into her microphone, triumphant. The figure to be drawn — not even half my age. She’s completely emptied her face for this job of standing still an hour. Look. Okay. But the little dream in there, inside the think that comes next. A pencil in my hand, its secret life is charcoal, the wood already burnt, a sacrifice. A pencil......

...The art of sharpening pencils BY MATTHEW JAMES TAYLOR ON 8 OCTOBER 2007 Welcome to the world of pencil sharpening - this may sound like a dull topic but there is actually a lot more to it than you think. There are a number of different sharpening styles and methods; all good artists should know them. The trick is using the right one at the right time. Sharpening styles There are four main points to select from; the one you choose will depend on the type of pencil you use, and the style of your drawing. The standard point Everyone knows about this one, its trademark conical point is the most common and the most versatile of sharpening styles. If you're looking for a good all-rounder for most types of pencils then this is the best. Plus if you don't have a sharpening knife then you probably don't have a choice. There are a couple of drawbacks with this style however. The standard point can get blunt quickly, particularly if you are using softer pencils such as charcoal. On larger drawings you will find yourself constantly sharpening the damn thing. Often lower quality pencils will contain a smaller diameter core of graphite; if this is slightly off-centre you will find the wood comes so close to the point on one side that it's almost unusable. This can very be frustrating. . The chisel point This is a rarely seen style where the end of the pencil is cut with a knife into a chisel shape. The main benefit of the chisel is its ability to draw two types of marks on......

...government restrictions. Dixon Ticonderoga Company being one of the oldest public companies in the United States is known predominantly for its No. 2 yellow pencil which was introduced in 1913. They were recognized as the second largest pencil manufacturer in the country at that time with annual revenues amounting to a little over $100 million dollars. (fundinguniverse.com) Within the 1990’s, Dixon was threatened with foreign competition where the Chinese began dumping pencils on the U.S market. Eventually, antidumping duties were placed on Chinese pencils, raising their prices in the process. This tactic by the American government proved futile as the Chinese produced a better product which continued to flood the US market. Trading has become much easier as barriers keep falling and businesses are now finding more opportunities internationally with the shift towards globalization. The Dixon Ticonderoga Company realized that this venture was going to improve sales and open new avenues for their slowly declining business. The company lost over $200 million dollars worth of business between the period of 1991 and 1999 leading them to explore cheaper ways in which to produce pencils, lower costs and eventually improve overall business. Steps included finding wood for production of pencils at a cheaper purchase price, making pencils out of recycled paper cases, purchasing erasers from a Korean supplier and lastly establishing a manufacturing operation in Mexico. An entirely......

... Project Design Problem Statement * The purpose of this project is to make a resistor from a pencil. I would like or want to figure out how electricity is trapped or contained to form the energy in a circuit to make electrical appliances work. In my experiment: I will create my own resistor out of pencils, along with my own circuit board to see the effects a circuit has on energy. *What a resistor does is slows down the flow of electricity through devices, which now days many devices use: dimmer switches, fan regulators, lights, and what I’m typing on a computer, and many more things in everyday living. Relevance of your testable question * Graphite will be the main material used on this project: which is the pencil lead. It is an electrical conductor, which allows many electrical possibilities. It is one of the allotropes of carbon, which in the next paragraph I will give a brief description from Wikipedia. Graphite is considered a semimetal, so there are many electrical possibilities that can be done with it. Along with many other uses for it. Allotropes (Graphite) “unlike a diamond, graphite is an electrical conductor. Thus, it can be used in, for instance, electrical arc lamp electrodes. Like wise, under standard conditions, graphite is the most stable form of carbon. Therefore, it is used in thermochemistry as the standard state for defining the heat formation of carbon compounds.” (Definition retrieved from Wikipedia) Literature......

A Pencil and Paper Algorithm for Solving Soduku

...A Pencil-and-Paper Algorithm for Solving Sudoku Puzzles J. F. Crook T he puzzle Sudoku has become the passion of many people the world over in the past few years. The interesting fact about Sudoku is that it is a trivial puzzle to solve. The reason it is trivial to solve is that an algorithm exists for Sudoku solutions. The algorithm is a tree-based search algorithm based on backtracking in a tree until a solution is found. If all a person needs to do is sit down at their personal computer, punch in the numbers given in the puzzle, and then watch a computer program compute the solution, we can reasonably ask why a person would bother to struggle to solve Sudoku puzzles. The reason is that people enjoy struggling with pencil and paper to work out Sudoku solutions. Herzberg and Murty (2007, p. 716) give two reasons for the enjoyment of this struggle: First, it is sufficiently difficult to pose a serious mental challenge for anyone attempting to do the puzzle. Secondly, simply by scanning rows and columns, it is easy to enter the “missing colors”, and this gives the solver some encouragement to persist. This paper develops an algorithm for solving any Sudoku puzzle by pencil and paper, especially the ones classified as diabolical. down into nine 3 × 3 subboards that do not overlap. We call these subboards boxes and number them from 1 to 9 in typewriter order beginning in the upper left-hand corner of the board, as displayed in Figure 1. The......

The company was founded in the 1870 by Joseph Dixon as The Joseph Dixon Crucible Company. He introduced the No. 2 yellow pencil to the United Sates, and came to be the world’s largest dealer, and consumer of graphite world wide What began as a small business in Salem, Massachusetts with the discovery of graphite as a stove polish and an additive in lubricants, foundry facing, brake linings, oilless bearings, and non corrosive paint and manufactured lubricants soon expanded nation wide with annual revenues of a hundred million dollars and more. In 1982 Joseph Dixon Crucible merged with Bryn Mawr Corporation forming the Dixon Ticonderoga Company (www.dixonusa.com). However, in 1990 business was not as easy (refer to Appendix 2). The Company was faced with some foreign competition .Which could put the American pencil industry out of business. “The Chinese were dumping pencils on the U.S market” (Hill, 32). The American pencil industry felt threatened and heavy antidumping duties where placed on Chinese pencils which raised their price. However the Chinese still had a better product and continued to eat up the American market. The Dixon Ticonderoga Company had to realize that the economy was shifting more and more towards globalization. The global market place is where business now lies. Trading......
