Markowitz portfolio theory (MPT) is a theory on how risk-averse investors can construct portfolios to optimize or maximize expected return based on a given level of market risk, emphasizing that risk is an inherent part of higher reward. According to Markowitz portfolio theory, investors attempt to maximize portfolio expected return by analyzing risk, return, correlation and diversification.

Under certain assumptions and for specific quantitative definitions of risk and return, MPT explains how to find the best possible diversification strategy. MPT assumes that investors are risk averse, meaning that given two portfolios that offer the same expected return, investors will prefer the less risky one. Thus, an investor will take on increased risk only if compensated…...

Administrative Agency

...Administrative agency: Regulations Monika Felton Keller Graduate School of Management Legal, Political, and Ethical Dimensions of Business MGMT 520 Professor Melchiori November 5, 2012 Administrative Agency: Regulations The Administrative Agency The Federal administrative agency for which the chosen regulation controls is the United States Department of Agriculture, (USDA). The agency under the USDA for which the departmental proposed regulation falls is the Food and Nutrition Service, (FNS); the FNS works to reduce hunger among low-income populations providing greater access to higher nutritional standards with the aid of the U.S. agriculture (www.USDA.gov). The proposal addresses the administrative aspect of local educational agencies, (LEA), on the school lunch program and how best to ensure accurate documentation and assessment of family eligibility. The proposal affects section 304 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (Pub. L. 111-296) (www.USDA.gov). Why the Agency and Regulation is of Interest The proposed regulation is of interest due to the fact that it will directly affect the lives of thousands of low income children for which my job concerns. As a child case manager, approval of “free” lunches for low income households is often that bridge provides a large portion of daily and weekly meals for many clients. The regulation states that incomplete applications will not be approved; let it be noted that many parents lack the necessary data......

...to remember and understand alll these, it's depressing. My mental judgment tells me that you know what you are saying. Thank you. (That still I´m not) you don´t need to be a PhD in Economics (even as having one can help): you DO need a lot of PATIENCE, you need a discipline of reading everyday A LOT about global economic & political news (discarding the garbage from real-value information), you need a strategy and need to follow it, and you need to remember Peter Lynch´s famous phrase: ¨The main organ in Investing is not the brains: it´s the stomach!¨ . Good investing & best regards. Also, when the stock market drops due to some economic event, we often get dollar rallies. The reason is because everyone is selling thier stock and trading it for Cash. If everyone wants cash, cash becomes scarce and therefore it gains in value. remember than when everyone is SELLING stocks in a panic, they are trading thier stiocks for DOLLARS. Here is what I would do if I had pay-for investment service. 1. Wait for a time of max uncertainty. 2. Make a gutsy call in either direction, down is much preferred, fear works better. 3. Mention all publicly available bad stuff, refer to a model, but never ever disclose any details. Have people pay for it on my website. 4. If it does not work, blame the govt for interfering with free markets. If it works, claim victory. Either way, you win. Germany Okayed letting banks access the EU's super-bailout fund....

Agency

...Agency Costs (Fama and Jensen 1983) Contracting problem or principal/agent problem. Agent is person tasked to do something on behalf of the principal. Jensen and Meckling (1976) Definition: “ We define an agency relationship as a contract under which one or more persons (the principal(s)) engage another person (the agent) to perform some service on their behalf, this involves delegating some decision making authority to the agent”. Examples: Patient – Doctor (delegate authority to doctor to choose medication), Client – Lawyer, Client – Taxi Driver. CEO and management team are agents of the stock holders with aim to raise stock price as high as possible. Why hire agents? * To access their skills or expertise(main reason) * To free up time for other things (Opportunity Cost), Eg. Tiger Woods does not cut his own grass at home, he knows his grass. * To fulfil a legal requirement – eg. External Auditor, Priest for marriage. * To send a signal– eg. Hire best law firm or investment bank in a takeover situation, not necessarily because you need them but because it will intimidate the other side. Eg. Goldman Sachs is our banker. Signalling to market place The basic Problem Agents are utility maximisers concerned mainly with their own happiness. Ie. They do not behave exactly as principal wishes they would. “If both parties to the relationship are utility maximisers, there is a good reason to believe that the agent will not always......

Market Solutions to the Agency Problems

...Market Solutions to the Agency Problem in Periodic Financial Reporting Edgar Carlos Duarte Aguilar “The statesman, who should attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals, would not load himself with a most unnecessary attention, but assume an authority which could safely be trusted, not only to no single person, but to no council or senate whatever, and which would nowhere be as dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it.” Adam Smith Introduction Enron’s bankruptcy in 2001 was a milestone in recent times as far as corporate governance regulations it is concerned. Besides the executives, the external auditors were accused and found guilty as accomplices in distorting the accounting information the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) required from them as a public company that traded its securities in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). US Government’s reaction was to increase the regulation on the activities performed by all public companies by issuing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOA) and creating the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). It was now required that the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of each company signed a statement on the effectiveness of the Company’s internal control and that the external auditors issued a report on this management’s statement, besides their previously required report on the fair presentation of its financial statements....

...Bumpy Ride for Stocks Post-Fed By JONATHAN CHENG Stocks bounced in and out of positive territory and the dollar and the 10-year Treasury note fell after the Federal Reserve said it would buy $600 billion in longer-term securities by the middle of next year as part of its latest effort to prime the domestic economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 11 points, or 0.1%, to 11178, while the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell less than one point to 1193 and the Nasdaq Composite fell less than one point to 2533. [pic]Getty Images A financial professional looks over at his screen on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange in the middle of the trading day Nov. 3. The 10-year Treasury note sank, pushing the yield up to 2.634%. Gold and metals also fell as the Fed said it would maintain its existing policy of reinvesting principal payments from its securities holdings, and purchase a further $600 billion of longer-term Treasury securities by the end of the second quarter of 2011 at a pace of about $75 billion a month. The Fed said it would also "regularly review the pace of its securities purchases and the overall size of the asset-purchase program" as economic data flows in. Expectations of Fed easing had helped fuel a two-month surge on the stock market that has added 12% to the Dow. The Fed move was generally in line with market estimates, putting to rest the idea that the central bank would proceed on a more cautious step-by-step basis from the......

Stocks

...Stocks Stocks October 10, 2015 XACC/291 Stocks Many people wonder why preferred stock is referred to as preferred and what makes it more attractive to investors. Preferred stock shares are "preferred" because they have the preference over the common shares to receive dividends and company assets if the business is liquidated. If a company does not have enough cash to pay dividends to both the preferred shares and the common shares, the preferred shareholders must be paid first. Any Company or Corporation can issue two types of stock: Common and preferred. Common stock is defined as a partial ownership in a company and these are the shares that usually are referred to when discussing a company’s stock. Investors will always look at common and preferred stocks in many different ways. If I had to choose between preferred and common stock I would have to go with preferred stock. A Preferred Stock is very much like a bond, but usually without an expiration date. Typically Investors would buy preferred stocks for their income potential, and common stocks for their growth. Common stock, on the other hand, generally has far more opportunity for appreciation than preferred stocks to. So it can be a difficult choice and of course will vary but it seems that preferred stock would always be the more beneficial since they do not fluctuate much like common stock would. In addition preferred stocks can have several versions, but with common stock there is only one......

Agency

...Question 1. The first agency risk exists between the food suppliers and the Aegean Isles, Inc. One major reason contributing to Aegean Isles’s success is the high-quality and authentic Greek food, which depends on the quality of the perishable raw material and other non-perishable products served in the restaurant. Once the raw material is not fresh or other products are not high-quality, food served at the restaurants will not taste as good as before and this will definitely harm the restaurants’ reputation. If the new restaurant operates as a company-owned branch, the purchasing unit will be responsible for all the non-perishable inventories and perishable inventories needed. The restaurant managers only have a little authority. Therefore, Aegean Isles can execute better quality control on the products. Also, as Aegean Isles will choose reliable suppliers for long-term cooperation, the likelihood of this agency risk is not that high. However, Aegean Isles has constant suppliers. If one of these suppliers provides stale vegetables or fruits, all the five restaurants controlled by Aegean Isles will be effected negatively. The magnitude of this agency risk is quite high. If the new restaurant operates as a franchise, the franchise will be free to purchase such food as fresh products, domestic beer and wine from a local economy. The franchise may choose second-class products for economic reasons. Aegean Isles can not take much control on the quality of the products. The......

Media Agency

...media agency In association with: Selecting a media agency INTRODUCTION Whatever their size and experience, advertisers strive for quality, performance and productivity in all disciplines; and media strategy/media buying are no exception. In any discipline, questioning its process may occur at certain times in the lifecycle of an organisation, and this may lead to a media pitch. Over the past years, media planning and buying have come through many changes. Communication groups have turned their media departments into specialised companies and independent media buying shops have strengthened their skills and strategic capabilities. The companies are no longer mere buying points but real media agencies: their competencies have broadened to better meet advertisers’ needs. Today, advertisers face a highly concentrated and sophisticated media agency market, whose players have a high degree of professionalism. Selecting a business partner in this area is therefore a critical step for both the advertiser and the agency, and from both a strategic and financial perspective. In this context, this guide aims at helping advertisers and agencies to work together in an informed manner, focusing on quality and performance in their relationships. We propose methods, from defining the objectives to fine-tuning the contractual arrangements, which will allow the advertiser and its media agency to build a new relationship on solid grounds. Rather than identifying the “best” media......
