“Priming” happens when a thought, image, emotion, memory, etc. becomes salient in the mind due to some internal or external stimulus. Spreading activation triggers related concepts in the mind after an initial schema has been primed. The following studies and resources detail experiments in “embodied cognition,” which is the process by which metaphors related to the physical world activate schemas in the interpersonal and social world.
Ackerman, J., Nocera, C. & Bargh, J. (2010). Incidental Haptic Sensations Influence Social Judgments and Decisions. Science, 328, 1712-1715.
Williams, L., & Bargh, J. (2008). Experiencing Physical Warmth Promotes Interpersonal Warmth. Science, 322, 606-607. http://www.yalez .edu/acmelab/
For this assignment, choose from one of the following two options:
Option A: Imagine that you are a professor of social psychology, and you are in the process of designing an experiment. Your task is to devise a clever way of activating a thought/idea/etc. in someone’s mind (without explicitly saying it), which would then trigger the activation of another related concept. This concept MUST involve some aspect of social behavior, and cannot utilize an experimental design that involves simply reading a list of related words. Your write-up must include, in scientific language, an experiment that tests whether your priming strategy will work. Explain how you will operationalize your variables (independent & dependent) and what results you would expect to find. Be sure to explain what spreading activation is in plain English. Your proposal must be scientific, and must describe in detail at least 1 study/experiment that psychologists have performed on the…...

Mat 221 Week 5 Assignment

...Assignment 5 1 Assignment 5 DeJuan Stanley MAT 221 Prof Timothy Kilgore June 2, 2014 MAT 221 Week 5 Assignment Buried treasure. Ahmed has half of a treasure map, which indicates that the treasure is buried in the desert 2x + 6 paces from Castle Rock. Vanessa has the other half of the map. Her half indicates that to find the treasure, one must get to Castle Rock, walk x paces to the north, and then walk 2x + 4 paces to the east. If they share their information then they can find x and save a lot of digging. What is x? The key to solving this equation is to use the Pythagorean Theorem which has a right angle in the equation with a & b equaling side c. Based on the example we know that we will have to use the formula A^2 + B^2 = C^2. What we know is that Ahmed’s half of the map is 2x + 6 = treasure, which would be how far he would need to walk, (A^2). Vanessa’s map needs to show her how to get to the North of Castle Rock, which is 2x + 4, (C^2). We are trying to solve for X (side B). Vanessa is forming a 90 degree angle from point B and walk (2x + 4) until she made it to C. The formula we would use to solve for X is the following: (2x + 6)^2 = x^2 + (2x + 4)^2 4x^2 + 24x + 36 = x^2 +4x^2 + 16x + 16 The next step would be to combine like terms, multiplying, adding, and subtracting. 24x + 36 = x^2 + 16x + 16 -24x -24x 36 = x^2 – 8x + 16 -36 -36 Now we have a......

Psychology Assignment 4

...Psychology Assignment 4 Task 44: Define the principles of Classical conditioning. The study undertaken by Ivan Pavlov is still today the most well known example of classical conditioning. After studying the digestive system of dogs in 1927, Ivan noticed that his dogs would salivate at the sight of the lab assistant bringing them food. Through the process of classical conditioning, soon the sight of the lab assistant alone was enough for the dogs to salivate. Pavlov believed that the dogs had learnt to expect food from the assistant by association; he then investigated his theory further by beginning to experiment with a neutral stimulus, in this case the sound of a bell. Pavlov sounded a bell as food was placed in front of the dogs, it did not take long for the dogs to produce saliva at the mere sound of the bell. The process of Classical Conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning as it is also known as works as follows: Stage 1 – Food in this experiment is the unconditioned stimulus (UCS). The UCS equals salivation which is the unconditioned response (UCR). Salivation is an involuntary automatic response to a certain stimulus. This is a reflex controlled by the lower part of the brain; no learning is required to produce this response. At this stage before learning has taken place, the sound of a bell will cause no response or an irrelevant response from the dogs. Stage 2 – Acquisition is the initial stage of learning, after repeatedly pairing food with the sound......

The data included are fictional and were created solely for this assignment. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D scale) is often utilized to measure depressive symptomology (Radloff, 1977). It is a self-assessment that is completed by the individual. The CES-D contains 20-items rated on a 4-point scale (0 = Rarely or None of the Time to 3 = Most or All of the Time). The phrase “Within the past week did you…” prefaces the questions in order to emphasize recent depressive mood. Scores are summed and can range from 0 to 60. Traditionally, individuals with scores over 16 are identified as “depressed” (Weissman, et al., 1977), though due to high false positive rates, a score of 27 is considered a more useful cut-off (Zich, et al., 1990). The full scale can be accessed at: http://www.chcr.brown.edu/pcoc/cesdscale.pdf. Items 4, 8, 12, and 16 are reversed to avoid “yay-saying” or “nay saying” (Radloff, 1977). Several studies have validated four subscales across a variety of subgroups (i.e., depressive affect, well-being, somatic, and interpersonal) (Gliem & Gliem, 2003). Reliability and Subtest Scoring You will continue the analysis of the CES-D data by learning...

Psychology Writing Assignment

...Writing Assignment #1 PSY 101-Online June 27, 2011 Writing Assignment #1 We see operant conditioning all around us from children in school to working adults. This method of learning that applies to voluntary behavior occurs through rewards and punishments. Knowing that there may be a reward at the end of a task will help motivate someone to stay focused and complete the task to the best of their ability. There are two different kinds of reinforcements that play a huge role in this operant conditioning, which are positive and negative reinforcements. In both cases, the behavior increases. Punishment on the other hand is completely opposite where the outcome causes a decrease in the behavior when following a response. There are also two kinds of punishment which is punishment by application and punishment by removal. It's important to use both forms of punishment wisely so you won't cause any abuse to a child physically or emotionally. Positive Reinforcements There are multiple ways to use positive reinforcements when either correcting or strengthening a behavior. However, not all positive reinforcements are the best ones to use. There are cases when parents will reward there children with food. They might say things such as, “If you are good, I will give you a cookie.” This can be a dangerous approach when adding such a pleasurable outcome because it could lead to obesity or other health issues if it is consistent. I have found that the positive......
