Chapter 6 Conditioning and Learning

In the text book Introduction of Psychology the chapter that I will be writing about would be on chapter 6 Conditioning and Learning. Conditioning and learning in the world of psychology has many interested theories about behaviors. Learning is a permanent change in behavior due to experience and it starts from our childhood stage in our lives. There are two types of learning, which is associative and cognitive behavior. Associative learning is a simple type of learning that affects many aspects of daily life. Cognitive learning involves making use of information rich higher mental process. In associative learning there are many practices and theories of associative learning such as reinforcements which is any events that will increase a response. Classical conditioning is an antecedent stimulus that doesn’t produce a response is linked with one that does. Another one would be operant learning is based on the consequences of responding. These are part of associative learning and have happened in many times in a human being life, including mine. At first this theory was experimented by a scientist from Russia Ivan Pavlov. He began with animals and observing there behaviors. What he has discovered for example if he is studying a dog, he rings a bell being a neutral stimulus the dog would not response. Immediately after, he placed meat powder on the dog’s tongue, which causes a reflex salivation. This process was repeated numerous times, and by repetition, every time when the dog hears the bell as conditioning took place the dog learned that the bell means there will be food in place. That’s pairing two stimuli; in this case it creates a learning response. Conditioning affects emotions, which applies to visceral or…...

...Michael Lin English 131 10/20/10 Appropriation in Culture In the documentaries Rip! : A Remix Manifesto and Walking on Eggshells: Borrowing Culture in the Remix Age, intertextual conversations arose when both films discussed appropriation by citizens in a positive light. In Walking on Eggshells, the director focused on one specific area of appropriation which looked at how common appropriation had been in the past. Moreover, he argues that artists sometimes wish to share their music, thus arguing in favor of mass appropriation. In Rip!, the director expands on those ideas by arguing why copyright laws are evil by applying that concept to different fields like medicine and plants. Due to the ridiculousness of copyright laws, mass appropriation should be allowed and such an act will benefit our culture because many new works could be created. The main premise behind Walking on Eggshells is the prevalence of appropriation. Examples throughout history were used like Picasso’s paintings being similar to old African paintings. Moreover, in television, cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny referenced famous people like Mozart to entertain children. Finally, in music, Daft Punk was essentially a fusion of the works of Mozart and Beethoven. With so many instances of appropriation, it is hard to punish everyone for committing it. Moreover, artists sometimes do not care about money, and so they are willing to let their music be downloaded for free or be remixed because they......

Dubstep

...or popular genres can be identified as far back as 2007, with artists such as Britney Spears using dubstep sounds; critics observed a dubstep influence in the song "Freakshow", from the 2007 album Blackout. Benga and Coki's single "Night" still continued to be a popular track on the UK dance chart more than a year after its release in late 2007 and became a popular song within the United States in the few years thereafter. However the year 2009 saw the dubstep sound gaining further worldwide recognition, often through the assimilation of elements of the sound into other genres, in a manner similar to drum and bass before it. At the start of the year, UK electronic duo La Roux put their single "In for the Kill" in the remix hands of Skream. They then gave remix duties of "I'm Not Your Toy" to Nero and then again with their single "Bulletproof" being remixed by Zinc. The same year, London producer Silkie released an influential album, using 70s funk and soul reference points, a departure from the familiar strains of dubstep and UK garage. The sound also continued to interest the mainstream press with key articles in magazines that began to give more public attention to those people in the dubstep music industry and began to bring in to the mainstream. In a move foreshadowed by endorsements of the sound from R&B, hip-hop and recently, mainstream figures such as Rihanna, or Snoop Dogg collaborated with dubstep producers Chase & Status allowing both their music to......

This I Believe

...up so you can all reunite. This is a scenario that happens everyday to so many different people all around the world. Music can stir up emotions in you that cause you to do things differently. Whether it’s taking an action or simply thinking in a different way, these are all acts that music has the power to cause. Music is constantly playing in my room and because of that I have so many different songs that remind me and make me think of so many different things. Just the other day I was relaxing in my dorm when a new song came on my laptop. It took me a while to realize it was a remix of an old song from when I was younger. Thinking of the old song kinda put me down. Although it wasn’t a sad song, it reminded me of the time when my grandfather passed away. I was about to change the song but instead I decided to actually listen to the lyrics. They were very positive and uplifting, and the remix version put a spin on it that gave the song a happy and fun tone. Before I knew it, I wasn’t that down anymore. Instead, I found myself thinking of the fun and silly times I had with my grandfather. I believe in the power of music. I believe that music has impactful ways of altering our mood, motives, thoughts, and ideas. Music has the power to bring out the positive and negative emotions in us all. All of us have had the experience of being transported by the sheer beauty of music—suddenly finding ourselves in tears, not knowing whether they are of joy or sadness, suddenly......

What Does a Music Producer Do, Anyway ?

...trademark “wall of sound” was an early example, whereas in the 80s Stock Aitken & Waterman developed and instantly recognisable template for their artists. Of course a distinctive sound is only a good thing if the producer’s style suits the material. Paul McCartney was famously outraged at what Spector did with “Let It Be”. Dr Dre is a more recent example of a “golden ticket” producer – almost single-handedly responsible for the output of a vast swathe of the biggest rap and R&B artists in recent years. 4. The Remixer Many people think of the ‘remix producer’ as a recent development, but the origins are actually a fusion of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s dub remixes with Tom Moulton‘s extended disco mixes in the mid 70s. Artists like Grandmaster Flash pioneered the use of cutting and scratching, and midi and sampling took this to another level. Remixing has now become so much a part of the mainstream music culture that often the remix becomes the hit before people know the original song !...

...Tekken’s F1 Ultimate FX Mapping v2.1 This mapping can be used beside the default Kontrol F1 mapping. All the controls of the Remix Decks are still available. You can change between this effect mapping and the default F1 mapping with the buttons "Shift" + "Browse" anytime. Installation: 1. Load the .nckf1 file into the Native Instruments controller editor (not the controller editor in Traktor): Open the editor and choose your F1. Then click “edit” on the right side and append the .nckf1 file. 2. Backup your own Traktor controller mappings (if necessary), because they will be overwritten in the next step. Use the "Export" button in the preferences. 3. Load the .tsi file into the Traktor controller editor (not the Native Instruments controller editor) with the BIG “Import” button (at the bottom of the Traktor preferences). A window opens and you have to select both available boxes. It is important to do this import twice. Now eight new Tekken midi mappings should be in the Traktor controller editor (in the preferences under “Device”). Click each of these mappings and check if the “In-Port” and “Out-Port” are set to your Kontrol F1. 4. In the Traktor preferences, in the “Traktor Kontrol F1” tab, switch the “MIDI Mode Type” to “MIDI Mode”. 5. Restore your own controller mappings from step 2 (if necessary). Now use the SMALL "Import" button. (Traktor Preferences -> Controller Manager -> Add... -> Import) 6. Activate the mapping (see “Usage” below). 7. If there is a......

Creative Spark Talk Analysis

...Creative Spark Talk Analysis PHL/458 Creative Spark Talk Analysis The video I have chosen is titled “Everything is a remix” by Kirby Ferguson, who is also the speaker. The presentation takes place in the year 2012 at Edinburgh, Scotland. The premise is that all creative thinking is based on the work done by those who came before us. In Kirby Ferguson’s words “Everything is a remix”, meaning there is nothing new under the sun. Ferguson defines the steps involved in making a “remix” of a song as consisting of 1) copy, 2) transform and 3) combine. This consists of copying each part of the song, transforming each part into something “new” and then combining them back into something new but based on the song or songs from before. Ferguson goes on to say that these steps: 1) copy, 2) transform and 3) combine, are the basic elements of all creativity. He goes on to use Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie as examples of great songwriters borrowing from others to make something uniquely their own. According to Ferguson, something like 66% of Dylan’s melodies was borrowed from folk singers that came before him. The lyrics were, in most cases, his, which brings us to the legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie and his take on songwriting. Woody believed that it was perfectly acceptable to “borrow” a melody here and there as long as the lyrics were original. Folk singing is mostly about telling stories anyway and Guthrie realized there are only so many chord changes that you can go through...

...infringement is no pretty piece of music, and even if it was, odds are it's not something outsourced on the public domain without rights granted by the copyright holder. In Brett Gaylor's "Rip: A Remix Manifesto", he stands as a web activist in an effort to dilute this barrier put up between producers and music aficionado's like you and I. The main protagonist along with the narrator is Girl Talk. Girl Talk creates "mashups" which range from a series of digital samples of other peoples music with the twist of his own flair and remix on the original pieces. A reoccurring trend throughout the movie with the use and publication of sampled remixes is that the artists allow the public domain to not only recreate and share the music, but the ability to price them at their own discretion. Gaylor's overall theme and structure of his documentary, trail along this "Remixer's Manifesto". This would be the scene that epitomized the film by detailing what has come of the music industry beyond the studio and how copyright has influenced our resources on the public domain. The first step presented in the movie, "Culture always builds on the past", took us to a media literate era where the creative process shaped users into creators which aloud the change of folk-art into future media through remix. However, our culture that was remixed, wasn't rightfully ours. The second step in the manifesto, "The past always tries to control the future", led us into the archives of intellectual......
