Managing Risks in Curriculum Activities

This document aims to assist staff undertake an effective risk assessment. The information presented here should be seen as the ‘minimum expected standard’ to manage risk, rather than the definitive list of requirements.

All the information presented should be carefully considered in respect to specific context, such as: 1. Which students will be involved? (age, maturity, experience, specific needs, number) 2. What will students be doing? (jumping, swimming, cutting, cooking, throwing, etc) 3. What will students be using? (hazardous materials, sporting equipment, tools, stove, etc) 4. Where will students be? (classroom, outdoors, pool, creek, at height, etc) 5. Who will be leading the activity? (experience, qualifications, etc). THE RISK MANAGEMENT PROCESS The workplace health and safety risk management process involves the following steps: 1. Identify the potential hazards 2. Assess the risk 3. Decide on the control measures 4. Implement the control measures 5. Monitor and review. Ideally, this risk management process should be integrated into routine lesson planning. Risk assessments are best completed by more than one person thinking about the hazards and controls. Therefore, you are encouraged to involve those planning and delivering the activity in the risk assessment process. By incorporating effective risk management processes into curriculum planning, staff will be taking proactive measures to minimise the risk of harm to all involved.

...Risk and risk management 1. Credit Risk – The risk of loss of principal or loss of a financial reward stemming from a borrower's failure to repay a loan or otherwise meet a contractual obligation. Credit risk arises whenever a borrower is expecting to use future cash flows to pay a current debt. Investors are compensated for assuming credit risk by way of interest payments from the borrower or issuer of a debt obligation. The higher the perceived credit risk, the higher the rate of interest that investors will demand for lending their capital. Credit risks are calculated based on the borrowers' overall ability to repay. This calculation includes the borrowers' collateral assets, revenue-generating ability and taxing authority (such as for government and municipal bonds). 1) Total loans to assets The loans to assets ratio measures the total loans outstanding as a percentage of total assets. The higher this ratio indicates a bank is loaned up and its liquidity is low. The higher the ratio, the more risky a bank may be to higher defaults. This figure is determined as follows: Loans to Assets = ( Loans / Total Assets ) 2) Nonperforming loans/total loans Nonperforming loans, or NPL, are loans that are no longer producing income for the bank that owns them. Loans become nonperforming when borrowers stop making payments and the loans enter default. ...Ms. Francis CJ261 April 13, 2011 Risk Management An asset is defined as “a useful or valuable quality, person, or thing.” An asset is also defined as “All properties, such as cash or stock that may cover the liabilities of a person or business.” Assets can also be defined as “people, equipment, property, business information, and professional reputation.” In this assessment the term people would include employees, visitors, and students. The equipment and property would include buildings, computers, books and all support equipment like televisions and video equipment. Student and employee information is the core of its business operation. What would happen if information from our students or employees is destroyed, tampered with, or even given to a third party for fraudulent use? Our assets are vulnerable through ways of the building being destroyed by a tornado, or files being destroyed by a hacker or even an employee that has been let go. This type of security can be fixed easily by changing the passwords frequently to prevent ex-employees excess to the computer network. If we change the passwords often then old employees would have a more difficult time getting into our computers to damage, alter, or even sell personnel information to a third party. Our computer equipment is inventoried by Teah Johnson every six months and the book are inventoried by Venus Jackson every quarter.
