Cultural Essay #2

The Hispanic Cultural celebration I have chosen to write about is Las Piñatas. Tradition is defined as the transmission of beliefs, celebrations, customs, ideas, legends, practices, and stories. These beliefs and celebrations are passed from one generation to another usually in oral form. Traditions help Hispanic cultures connect with their people, family, community, and friends. These traditions are practiced and carried out in both Latin American Countries as well as the United States. A piñata is a very high colored party ornament that is made from cardboard or clay. Most are made out of cardboard because once made with this you can make into any shape, flower, favorite animal, or superheroes. It is believed that the famous traveler Marco Polo witnessed the Chinese creating wonderful figures of animals that were covered in paper and then strung up with harnesses. These figures were then used by these people to celebrate the New Year. Then as a result Marco Polo brought the customs of these celebrations back to parts of Europe where the idea spread to many cultures vastly. When this form of celebration was spread to parts of Spain the celebration of lent was then turned into a “fiesta”. The Spanish then celebrated the occasion called “The Dance of the Piñata”. They then used a clay object for the piñata called the “la olla” which is the Spanish word for pot. The piñata tradition is highly popular in Central America as well as other Latin American countries such as Columbia, Ecuador, Porto Rico, Peru, and Venezuela. For children in Central America the “piñata ritual” a child would be selected to hit the piñata and then he or she would be blind folded. Using a stick or a club the child would then attempt to hit the piñata with the goal of cracking it open and getting the prizes that lay inside. These days in the Latin American culture the piñata is not attempted to be broken but instead opened by pulling the strings that have been attached to it. Piñatas are often used for birthdays but is also used events such as first communions and baptisms. There are many cultural celebrations that have been practiced by many Latin American cultures for a long time. The beliefs and practices that have been passed down from generation to generation continue to play an important role in these entire cultures heritage. The Piñata is just one landmark in Latin American Culture that continues to be used as a celebration to these people.

...Conversation in Spanish In many continents in the world, such as Europe, Northern Africa, Central and South America, Spanish is primarily spoken. In these various regions of the world, Spanish has a unique style, and is expressed in a plethora of dialects. In many ways the culture is incorporated into the language and it exhaust a lot of emotion in its morphological and phonological structure. Furthermore to clearly outline the Spanish language I will be comparing it with the English language. I will also like to focus in the region of Central America, in the country of Mexico. To generalize how diverse and complex Spanish can be, in this essay I will discuss, the six commonly used Speech Acts and give some examples, Language and gender, and cross cultural significance. In various aspects Spanish is very similar to Spanish. When we refer to speech acts we primarily focus on the ones we use daily. “Among the various kinds of speech acts, six have received particular attention:” Representatives, Commissives, Directives, Declarations, Expressives, and Verdictives. (Finegan 2008) Representatives in Spanish a.k.a. Representativos are quite often used in the language. For example: “Pienzo que esa camisa esta muy grande para ti.” (I think that shirt is too big for you) Another Speech act that is used is the Commissives. Por exemplo: “Si no te sales de mi tiera te prometo que te saco a balasos!” (If you don’t get out of my land I will shoot you) I may seem like an aggressive......

Celebration of Discipline Book Review

...Celebration of Discipline Book Review Introduction The Celebration of Discipline[1] by Richard Foster is similar to Spiritual Life: The Foundation for Preaching and Teaching[2] and The Spirit of the Discipline[3] but provides considerably more biblical support for the practice of spiritual disciplines. All three books, however, cite their practice as the solution for carnality and spiritual ineffectiveness of the church. All claim that spiritual disciplines are the means to bring God’s grace to bear on hearts that have become blind and dull of hearing. An implicit message of these books is that the practice of spiritual disciplines has been a hidden truth since Reformation days and that by going back to medieval days and exploring mysticism to find answers has merit. As pointed out in a previous critique of Westerhoff’s book,[4] mysticism, subjectivity, intuition and imaginative reflection weave their way through the descriptions of spiritual disciplines and this is also true, to some extent, in The Celebration of Discipline and The Spirit of the Disciplines. The apparent differences in style and emphasis appear to stem from each author’s religious orientation (i.e., Westerhoff functions as a priest in the Episcopalian Church and is oriented to Roman Catholic mysticism, Foster is a Quaker grounded in the mysticism and intuitive approach of the Friends and Willard is an evangelical Baptist who embraces the spiritual formation movement). They all seem draw heavily......

Holidays and Celebrations

...Holidays and Celebrations The book “All Around the Year” by Jack Santino is about the holidays and celebrations in America and how different decorations have different meanings. It follows the change of the seasons and the holidays that fall during those times. The books starts off by telling the reader that everyone views holidays differently and that everyone has their own celebrations besides the main ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have anniversaries and birthdays, ethic holidays and occupational celebrations. Depending on how you were raised and what religion you are decides some holidays you choose to celebrate or ignore and how you would decorate for the time of year. Chapter two is about holiday symbols and meaning. It talks about the kitchen being the center of the house, it is always decorated to go along with the seasons and the food that is created and baked to feed the family throughout the year. There are colors that represent different times of the year and you will always find the warm colors of changing seasons in the kitchen because the woman is customarily in charge of it. It talks about when they start decorating for different holidays and how long it will be before they come down. Neighbors compete against each other to have the most elaborate or most creative decorations for the holidays. It is a never ending battle to have the best of everything. Chapter three is about the winter and spring months. Winter has the shortest days and......

...Cultural Sensitivity and the Health Practices in Dominican Republic Manoucheka Chery Grand Canyon University: NUR-502 May 7, 2014 Cultural Sensitivity and the Health Practices in Dominican Republic The demographics of the United States is changing to one that is multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual. Culture is a vital component in the health and wellness of individuals. Culture affects individuals' beliefs, definition of health, treatments, and interaction with healthcare providers. These beliefs may affect the patient’s compliance with medication or therapy. In order to address the diverse beliefs of today’s population the advance practice nurse must be culturally competent. Barker and DeNisco (2013) defined cultural competence as a “compilation of the clinical skills and professional behavior of a healthcare provider focused on the cultural values, beliefs, and perceptions of the consumer while both are engaged in the therapeutic relationship” (p.486). According to Higgins and Learn (1999), the Hispanic population includes a diversity of subgroups. Although each subgroup shares a common language, “they differ in traditions and customs” (Higgins & Learn p. 1105). This paper will focus on Hispanics residing in rural Dominican Republican. Purim Celebrations

...Purim Celebrations: The Jewish Holy Day Introduction The Jewish culture considers its holy day’s as very scared days. The Jewish people are a people of celebration. The entire year long there are many holy days that the Jewish people love to celebrate. Seven of the major Jewish holy days are Shabbat, Purim, Passover, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, and Shavuot. Each holiday has its own customs, presentations, and services that make it different from the other Jewish holidays. Out of these days, Purim is the greatest day of the year. It is not only a day of happiness and merriment, but it also has within it a tremendous opportunity to come close to Hashem. In celebrating Purim it is in the twelfth month, Adar, at sundown on the thirteenth day (Sasson, 2005). It is a fun holiday, full of parties, drinking, and other celebratory observances. People give baskets of food to friends and the needy persons, and drink wine with the loved ones. Discussion Purim is the holiday that the Jewish nation was saved from Haman's evil decree of annihilation. This is a Rabbinical holiday as it took place thousands of years after the giving of the Torah. What is not exactly known is the strong connection between this glorious holiday and the Torah. The Jews say they have arranged a mass massacre of the Persians in these spring days, Jews celebrate an important Jewish holiday, Purim.  It is celebrated for two days: 14th and 15th of the month of Adar on the......

...The Taino and the Spanish Cristóbal Colón landed on an unknown island in the Caribbean on October 10, 1492. He planted banners in the beach claiming the land for the Spanish throne. Colón’s perceptions and interactions with the indigenous people, the Taino, sparked the events that lead to the colonization of the Americas. Colón’s perceptions of the Taino were misinterpreted by him. His misconceptions about the Taino were built from a compilation of his own expectations, readings of other explorers, and strong religious influence in Western Europe. The Taino also misunderstood the Spanish as well. Their false beliefs about the Spanish were driven by their religious beliefs as well as their mythology. Through misunderstandings backed by the religions, physical appearances, and the histories of both the Taino and the Spanish, the Taino believed that the Spanish were god-like figures that fell from the sky, while the Taino were perceived by the Spanish as simplistic, uncultured natives, that would be easily converted to Christianity and used as servants (Wilson, Hispanola p. 48-49).1 To better comprehend these events one must look at the preceeding events in both the lives of the Taino and The Spanish. Before the time of Cristóbal Colón, Spain had recently had several encounters with colonization. They had taken over the kingdom of Granada and the Canary Islands. These colonizations gave Spain their model for subsequent colonizations. The dominance of Christianity in the......
