Dangers of Texting

...Clivio 1 Thomas Clivio Professor Marie Salamone College Writing I October 17, 2012 Dangers of Texting With the advent of the cell phone came a new means of social media and communication called texting. But with all the benefits an emerging technology can offer, we can’t always predict what the impact will be on our society. This new form of communicating brought with it its own dialogue as well as its own dangers. We’ve seen an increase in accidents caused by distracted teen drivers who were texting, a new medium of bullying in our schools, and the newest trend that’s become popular with teens and young adults known as “sexting”. As cell phones become more popular, and the age of cell phone users gets younger and younger, so will the person who will be exposed to sexting. As our younger generation gets ever more influenced by the proliferation of sexually explicit images in the media and scantily dressed celebrities, the more difficult the job of a parent will become. How many more teens need to die from texting while driving or from committing suicide after sexting provocative images before we recognize this growing problem? With the introduction of texting to our youth and the impact it has on our society, we have been presented with a whole new set of concerns and it is clear that these concerns need to be addressed. The first forewarning of the dangers this new form of communication presented, came in the increase of distracted driver fatalities. ......

Dangers of Technology

...The Dangers of Technology Major advancements in technology, specifically dealing with health, are a dangerous thing. Whether it be augmentations, medicine, or reanimation there are serious consequences for advancing technology both on an individual, moral level and for society as a whole. When someone decides to make advancements in science it typically comes at the cost of human relationships. New technology drives people away from each other. New technology is always hotly debated in the news. In the end a society has to decide whether or not a new technology is moral or not. Advancing technology also advances power, which is the most dangerous thing of all. The novel Frankenstein and the video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution explore these dangers. Technology is a dangerous tool to society because it has the ability to destroy human relationships, it can be morally wrong, and it can allow certain groups and individuals to gain scary amounts of power. In the beginning of Frankenstein, Victor was social and communicated with his friends and family often. After Victor created the Creature, he ran into Henry who took notice of the effects of the creation on Victor. Henry said, “I did not before remark how very ill you appear; so thin and pale; you look as though you have been watching for several nights.” (Shelley 45). Victor worked tirelessly on making advancements to science and it made him sick. He did not talk or see his friends or family for a long time. The Creature......

Narcolepsy Dangers

...inconvenient but treatable disorder. There are many dangers in this disorder. There have been many deaths by someone falling asleep randomly behind the wheel of a car, some due to exhaustion or old age, a lot due to the driver suffering from narcolepsy. Others have had their social lives ruined, narcolepsy being a disease many can’t understand and so have been abandoned by family and friends. Without these essential social skills, life would become increasingly difficult in their future. While dangerous, narcolepsy is also extremely inconvenient to have. Finding out you have narcolepsy is a challenge in itself, from what I have read through personal stories and recounts. Then comes the bills from the doctor appointments, and the medication. When a person diagnosed with narcolepsy then tries to work to pay off said bills, they find themselves sleeping 14-17 hours a day, and then falling asleep at work. This begins a vicious cycle. However, there IS treatment for narcolepsy. Xyrem helps those suffering from this disorder get a better nights sleep. Amphetamine-like drugs are used to help get rid of all the symptoms as a whole, if only temporarily. Stimulants give users the energy to get through the day. While most of these are not the healthiest options, there is treatment for narcolepsy and it is not a hopeless cause. Even if narcolepsy is not the most dangerous disorder, it is still an extreme danger to many. The dangers of this disorder are too extreme to ignore. Many......

The Dangers of Facebook

...friends, but for others, its big business. In 2012, Facebook made over $5 billion in revenue, which isn’t too shabby for a free service. Of course, there are a lot of potential dangers to be had when dealing with Facebook. No website is perfect, and it’s important that people are away of the potential hazards that can be attributed to Facebook and the internet in general. The first danger is one that Facebook shares with pretty much the entirety of the internet. You never know who you’re really talking to. You never know who is on the other end of the internet and who is sitting at the computer. Facebook is pretty good about requiring a real name and valid email address and whatnot to make an account, but it’s still easy enough to make fake accounts. At the same time, Facebook always does their best to make it clear that you should only be friends with people you actually know. If you decline a friend invite, it will ask if you know the person. If you say no, and enough other people say no, then that account is banned from Facebook. So they are doing their best to make sure you’re only talking to people you know, but there are still a ton of people who just friend request everybody they see, and who accepts anybody that sends them a friend request. These people don’t seem to care about the potential dangers. What goes along with this is the need for privacy. Facebook has gotten a lot better with their privacy policies, making less account information visible by default. A......

Group Think

... What is Groupthink? Groupthink occurs when a decision is swayed within a group based on bias or opinions of particular entity or subset. Many decisions in an organization are made not by an individual, but rather by groups of individuals (Sauter, 2010). The goal of groups is to help make decisions within a company based on research, discussions and brainstorming various ideas to come up with the ideal solution based on reasoning. When groupthink occurs, members ignore limitations or impropriety of their analyses as well as possible consequences of their choice process (Sauter, 2010). Decisions become swayed towards the bias despite personal knowledge or feelings and in many cases simply because of an underlying friendship. Hoggs and Haines (1998) wrote that “research has failed to clarify the causal role of group cohesiveness in groupthink because of a failure to distinguish cohesiveness from friendship”. An example of this occurred recently in a decision support group. The group is made up of various department heads and some of their supervisors. The topic of what departments charge activity should be listed on the weekly flash reports was brought up by the billing director. She noticed that the report was missing a few departments and wanted to get the group to agree that the missing departments needed to be included. The billing supervisor even agreed and was very disappointed that three departments were not included on the report for the past year. As everyone......

The Dangers of Smoking

...The Dangers of Smoking You find that many of your friends have taken up smoking. It is affecting their health. Write an article for your school newsletter on the dangers of smoking. Smoke that kills A smoker can easily be identified in any group. Not only does he reek of stale smoke, he also has bad breath, much to the dread of non-smokers. However, the effects of smoking are far more insidious than the offensive smell associated with smokers. Cigarette smoke contains many toxic substances like carbon monoxide, nicotine and carcinogens that not only cause irreparable damage to the smoker, but also to those around him who inhale the smoke. Carbon monoxide reduces blood capacity to carry oxygen, thus causing fatigue and panting even with the slightest physical exertion. The lack of oxygen in the body acts as a catalyst that accelerates the aging process, causing wrinkles. Nicotine contained in cigarette smoke reduces the activity of the brain and nervous system. It also raises the risk of high blood pressure. Nicotine causes the contraction of blood vessels and decrease of blood supply. This ultimately leads to heart attacks. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing certain kinds of cancers because cigarette smoke contains carcinogens. Long-time smokers often develop cancers of the mouth, larynx and lungs. Smoking not only endangers the smoker himself but also those who inhale secondary smoke -- smoke exhaled y smokers. In view of the many dangers of......

Breaking Group Think by Dr. Bea Carson

...Abilene. They are engaging in as little motion as possible, drinking lemonade and playing dominoes. At some point, his father-in-law suggests they drive to Abilene to eat at a cafeteria there. Jerry thinks this is a crazy idea but everyone else seems to want to go, so he agrees that it sounds like a good idea. They get in their family car (which lacks airconditioning) and drive through a dust storm to Abilene. They eat a mediocre lunch at the cafeteria and return to Coleman exhausted, hot, and generally unhappy with the experience. It is not until they are back home that it is revealed that none of them really wanted to go to Abilene – they were just going along because they thought all the others were eager to go. Dr. Harvey used this wonderfully simple parable to illustrate what he believes is a major symptom of organizational dysfunction. He warns of the dangers of “management of agreement” – as opposed to management of disagreement or conflict. His unique perspective shows us how we do not engage in deep inquiry or self-disclosure when attempting to come to a consensus with others. If we are certain that everyone else is in agreement, we do not express our own conflicting opinion. Contrast that with the phenomenon of “groupthink,” where the members of the group all truly believe they are doing the right thing. © 2006 Carson Consultants 1187 Neptune Place Annapolis, MD 21401 410-349-1326 www.carson-consultants.com Avoiding Abilene Bea......

The Danger of Drugs

...The Danger Of Drugs “Road accident! Four killed! Driver under influence of alcohol”  “Boy killed father for not giving money”                      These lines often hit the news paper headings. These are mainly due to drug abuses. Many people think this is not of their concern and their family members are more good enough  that they won’t come across these experiences in their life. But the truth is opposite. Any person at any age can indulge in drug abuse. so all should be aware of drug abuse and drug addiction. In this article I am going to discuss a little bit about the danger of drug.                       Drug abuse refers to regular intake of substances which are hazardous to our health. These substances vary from prescribed medications, alcohol, cigarettes to narcotic drugs such as cocaine, hashish, heroin etc. The use of these substances also produces a craving or a physical addiction, which leads to regular intake of the drugs. These drugs can be swallowed, sniffed, inhaled, injected, absorbed through skin or dropped into the eyes. Reasons for people start using drugs: There may be many reasons to start up drug abuse by a person. Many  times the company or friends that a person keeps, may be responsible for his habits. Most of the time teenagers pick up these habits under peer pressure. Other than these, emotional  reasons  such as not being loved, depression, low self esteem, to escape from......

Prevent Group Think

...Various Ways to Prevent Group-think * Foster open climate for discussion ① Seating Arrangement Seating arrangement is important in creating an open atmosphere for discussion. Most organizations are hierarchical so that it is usually hard for subordinates to express their ideas directly to their heads. If members of an organization seat in orderly manner by their positions, there should be an invisible wall, which prevents from expressing their ideas. Thus, the climate is rather formal. All people would become careful on what they are saying. As a solution, a round table would be appropriate for making an open climate. It will also help reduce the distance between the heads and subordinates. ② So-called ‘Dosirak Meeting’ It means that members of a group freely speak with each other while they are having launch. In this situation, the talk will begin with small talk. Naturally, the less formal climate will lead to a brisk discussion. ③ Small group meeting A group is further divided into smaller groups. In a small group meeting, people might feel less pressure. People might freely talk in a smaller group. However, one thing should be kept that members should be rotated regularly because the same smaller groups will also lead to group-think. ④ Using Intranet, SNS(Social Networking Service) By using an intranet, members can freely share their opinions on a bulletin board. Sometimes anonymity is allowed if needed. I think it may accelerate more......

The Dangers of Society

...The Dangers to Society of the Drug Ecstasy The drug Ecstasy is dangerous for not only our people, but also a menace to society. With my own experiences in college and people I am closely bonded to, or used to be, I have seen this highly used club drug invade our campuses of America by leaps and bounds. I can tell you more than one story about young college friends that had 4.0 GPAs and promising careers ahead and now have nothing because of this drug. I remember a doctor telling me that 12 years ago this drug was not even known of and now it seems every other day we are reading in the paper of overdoses or reports on the cerebral damage it does. The concern is very high about the use of this drug by young people and it very well should be as for the fact of it has a no win situation when this drug is used. When Exstacy is used, it not only causes cerebral damage and stunts the ability of that user to learn, but it can also result in death. There are quite a few people I have met in my experience who were the definition of intelligent and were always just a little quicker to "pick things up" in the classroom, but after their experimentation of Ecstasy were not. After a while these users began to show signs degenerative cognitive ability: memory loss, inability to learn in class, and a "spaced out" demeanor. Not only can this drug cause learning problems, but also can throw a person into severe depression. If you talk to nearly 1/3 of the United States this disease is......

Group Think

...done in regards to group think. Group think helps you accomplishing task that individuals can’t. There are eight symptoms of group think. Illusion of Invulnerability, Collective Rationalization, Illusion of Morality, Excessive Stereotyping, Pressure for Conformity, Self-Censorship, Illusion of Unanimity, and Mindguards. When we think of group think, the eight symptoms will come into play. I think back on our desert survival exercise, and can recall where each of the symptoms was addressed. Illusion of Invulnerability you will take extreme risk that you wouldn’t normally do as an individual. In regards to the desert exercise, as a group we took more risk, and felt more secure with our decisions as a group. Collective Rationalization will make you come up with excuses about your decision, and be able to explain away any warnings someone would have about your information addressed. I remember discussing why we were picking certain items, and rationalizing our ideas in our desert exercise. Illusion of Morality means that you ignore danger and take risk. What usually happens in this step, the group does not consider all options, and they strive for agreement. I can see where this symptom came in play. At first, the group didn’t consider the dangers of traveling verses staying at the wreck site during the exercise. Excessive Stereotyping is basically having negative stereotypes about people outside of the group. Stereotyping others happens with group think, due to the......
