Valkyrie Film is often used as a medium to portray important historical events that the common viewer can then experience themselves. The film Vlakyrie portray the events of WW2. Specifically it covers the 20 July plot and Operation Valkyrie. The 20 July plot was the plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler inside his Wolf’s Lair in Rastenburg, East Prussia and Operation Valkyire was originally a plan to continue the government after an emergency but was changed so that the conspirators would be able to take control of Germany after the assignation of Hitler. The plan was instigated by Colonel Claus von Stauffenburg (Played by Tom Cruise) who was recruited by conspirators to come up with the plan. The film also has many themes and uses a few literary elements. This movie is a pretty realistic portrayal of the actual event and has a pretty good story. The film Valkyrie takes place during World War 2. The film covers the events of the July 20 plot. The main character of the story is Colonel Claus von Stauffenburg. The story follows him from the beginning of the story when he gets recruited to the cause. He then meets other committee members such as Dr. Goerdeler, and Witzleben. There Stauffenburg comes up with assignation plan. Their first attempt at the plan fails but they get another attempt ot try again. The second time they try the bomb is placed and the plan looked like it worked with the bomb exploding in the meeting room with Hitler. They then mobilize the Reserve Army and attempt to take over Berlin. However their blast did not kill Hitler and he was alive. Their plan then falls apart and most of them get arrested. In the end they all end up dying of execution or suicide. The main purpose of this film was to inform people of failed assignation attempt on Hitler. Many people probably did not know of this before watching this movie like myself and this movie informed them. There were a few themes in the movie Valkyrie. One theme in the movie is standing up against someone or something when it or they are not doing something morally right. Everybody involved in the plot wanted to stand up against the atrocities of Hitler and they wanted to show they would that not all Germans are bad. They knew the risks of what they were doing but they needed to do what was right. Another theme of the movie could be not falling in with the crowd. There may have been other people who thought Hitler was wrong but they didn’t do anything or just pretended to like him because he was popular. The conspirators didn’t fall into the crowd and went their own way. A third theme could be that evil is persistent and difficult to put down. Hitler dodged many assignation attempts and was never killed except by himself Valkyrie uses some literary elements in the story. One element of foreshadowing in the movie was when the first assignation attempt didn’t work. This would be an example that the assignation attempt would eventually end in faluire. This film was also very interesting. The historical aspect of the film was intriguing to watch and the movie also has some good actors and visuals. Most people would be interested to see this thriller as well as young people. Valkyrie is based on the real assignation attempt on Hitler. The basis of the plot is correct and many events are actual portrayals of what happened. One historical inaccuracy in the film however, is the first assignation attempt was in Berchtesgaden and not in Wolf’s Lair. This change was probably made because the creators of the movie probably thought people would get confused. Other than that one inaccuracy the movie is very true to the original events. I have not learned about this event so this film could be used in the classroom to teach about the assignation attempt as it is an accurate portrayal. Valkyrie is a good, solid movie that did not have many things wrong with it. It had an interesting plot and very suspenseful moments to keep the viewer entertained. The film also has some pretty cool visuals as well. One problem with the film thou was that it could get boring sometimes. A lot of the time in the movie there was nothing going on so I could lose attention pretty easy. Valkyrie was an engaging movie about a cool historical topic. It had a good plot and many themes with deep meanings. The movie also is factually accurate and could very well be used in the classroom to teach. The movie also had its weaknesses but its strengths prevailed though. This is a movie anyone would enjoy writing. Works Cited

Describe the Three Basic Types of Music Heard in Original Scores During the Silent Film Era and Cites Specific Examples from the Birth of a Nation. (10 Points)

...Adaptations of classics are the borrowing of a substantial portion of an existing composition for use in a film score. The music should remain largely intact and recognizable, although it can be altered or adapted to suit the needs of the film. Arrangements of tunes are a new setting of a previously composed melody. Unlike an adaption, in an arrangement the film composer borrows only the melody and creates a new accomplishment. Newly composed are themes that represent aspect of the story. Themes can be altered to reflect changes in story. Adaptations are among the most prominent adaptations are passages from Weber’s Der Freischutz, Suppe’s Light Calvary Overture, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (the storm), and Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie. The last of these serve as a spirited leitmotif for the ride of the KKK. The arrangements of well-known melodies are used primarily to arouse emotions and set moods. Southern tunes, such as “Dixie,” “Maryland, My Maryland”, and “Old Folks at Home” express stirring patriotism for the South while reminding the viewer of the story’s setting. Other patriotic melodies include “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “America the Beautiful,” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” When the Southerner Cameron seeks refuge in a cabin with the former Union soldiers, their acceptance of each other is suggested by the playing of “Auld Lang Syne,” a song associated with reconciliation after the Civil War. For newly composed, the mulatto Silas......

...world, which compete against each other to get the contract. If you consider this, it does not make sense to have several distribution centers. 2.) Valkyrie Case Valkyrie outsources a part of their distribution to contractors. Those contractors are specialized in distribution and can do it cheaper. The costs for Valkyrie are also variable because they do not need their own distribution centers. Valkyrie lower their fix costs, while the total costs depends more on the amount of sales, which means lower risk for the company as well. The other part of the stock is delivered to retailers all over the world. In that case Valkyrie has only just a few distribution centers, more specifically three distribution centers, one for each region they operate in. There is one distribution center located in Denver serving the Northern American market, one in the Netherlands for the European market and one in Singapore for the South-Eastern-Asian market. Because Valkyries Distribution centers are located in countries, which are known for their big harbours (the Netherlands and Singapore), it is supposed that the products by Valkyrie go by ship. This is the best solution to transport lamps in the cheapest way. The most relevant source from the slides plus class discussion for the Valkyrie case I think the most important issue for the Valkyrie case is the transportation, because it is by far the biggest cost driver. About 66% of all logistic costs are related to transportation. The US......

Historical Sources

...types of sources on which historians generally rely: primary and secondary. Primary Sources Primary sources are firsthand accounts or records. Primary sources provide a view of historical events or people as witnessed by people who were actually there. Primary sources have not been interpreted by others, but use the words, sounds, or images of those present during a historical period. Primary sources often incorporate the interpretation or attitude of the individual who recorded the experience; different people may often record different impressions of a single event. Examples of primary sources include the following: • A letter written by Otto von Bismarck • A recording or libretto of a portion of Wilhelm Richard Wagner’s The Valkyrie • The recording or transcript of a speech given by Jacques Chirac • The transcript of an interview with an 18th-century factory worker • Property tax registers from Languedoc • A photograph of German troops moving through a devastated Polish town during the Nazi invasion • A reprint of a propaganda poster • The last will and testament of a Norwegian merchant • A print of Paul Nash’s We Are Making a New World • A translation of the diary Anne Frank kept during the German occupation of the Netherlands • A Punch cartoon lampooning Benjamin Disraeli Historians prefer to view original versions of primary sources—viewing the enormous mural Guernica or reading the original Candide may provide insights overlooked in photographs or......

...and others that there wasn’t a World War happening, Hitler ordered that Jews were a disgrace and that the Nazis were to send them to death camps and to murder any Jews that get in the way of the spread of Germany. These events became known as the horror called the Holocaust. From 1940-1945 over 6 million Jews and many others were murdered either at a camp or by Nazis just finishing them off. To stop the spread of Germany and to finish Hitler off once and for all, the United States teamed up with the UK, Canada, many Europeans, and even Greece to obliterate the Germans at Normandy. They shoved the Nazis and Hitler back to Germany in 1944. In 1944 then, a few Nazis planned to eliminate Hitler and free Germany which became known as Operation Valkyrie. The blast and operation killed 2 officials but Hitler survived unharmed and the conspirators were executed 1 week later. Later, in 1945 Hitler marries Eva Braun, then he figures out that the Allies have surrounded Germany and want to take him into custody. Then the following night on April 30th 1945, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide. ...Article Critique Paper on The Childhood Experiences of Incarcerated Male Child Sexual Abusers An Assignment Submitted to Dr. Karena T. Valkyrie for Orientation To Psychological Studies PSY 2230 4/03/13 Madeline Holberg Troy University Literature Linda Garrett (2010) sought to gain a more thorough understanding of the reasons behind children becoming sexual abusers as adults. Research indicates that childhood experiences contribute to one’s self-concept and the notion that one is either a good or bad person (Chen and Boucher as cited in Garrett, 2010). If the child is exposed to violence, constant threat, and psychological or emotional abuse, a distorted self-concept develops and contributes to the casual properties of the person’s adult behavior or functioning (Garrett et. al. 2010). Research has suggested children who experience violent and sexual abuse are at a higher risk to repeat these inappropriate behaviors as adults (Garrett, 2010). To begin to understand the extent of the problem, this study focused on the childhood experiences of incarcerated male child sexual abusers (Garrett, 2010). Literature Critique This article was empirical. I found the literature section to be long. Some of the references used were more than ten years old. However, the literature section was clearly explained and thorough. Methods Participants Participants were chosen from a Southeastern prison if the psychological examiner found they met certain......

...Short Essays 1) Describe the three basic types of music heard in original scores during the silent film era and cites specific examples from The Birth of a Nation. (10 points) There are three basic types of music heard in The Birth of a Nation. Each type serves it’s own purpose in the film. The first is adaptations of classical works. These adaptations are extended versions of the original classical piece of work. These adaptations are used for extensive action scenes. For example, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie is the leitmotif for the Klu Klux Klan in the movie. The second type is arrangements of well-known melodies. These well-known melodies are used for emotional appeal. For example, “Dixie”, a very popular song of the South, is used to express Southern patriotism. Also, these well-known melodies were used to set a racist mood. A scene shows slaves dancing to “Turkey in the Straw”. Lastly, the third type is original music. The original music is used to reinforce the characters of the movie. For example, Elsie has a sweet, playful leitmotif. This theme implies her innocence. The original music in The Birth of a Nation is the strongest of the three types, composed by Joseph Carl Briel. 2) What is the role of source music in Casablanca? ...of the weapons, which included brass knuckles, broken beer steins, brass pipe ends , knives, guns, and anything else that could be wielded as a weapon. This first instance was subliminally important because it was the first domino that fell, and it started creating the “untouchable” persona Hitler would grow to immolate. Though this was the first assassination attempt, it isn’t the most famous. By far, the attempt on Hitler’s life on 20 July, 1944 holds the spotlight. This came to be known as “Operation Valkyrie,” named after the mythological creature that determined who would live, die, or be brought to Valhalla. This operation was, in short, a plot to blow up Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. When visited more in depth, this is one attempt that made it past most of Hitler’s paranoid security parameters. Operation Valkyrie was led by Claus von Stauffenberg. He was one of the key individuals secretly plotting to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Valkyrie, didn’t just fail with the explosion in July, but there are many instances leading up to that where the circumstances just didn’t pan out. The group leading the attack could never capitalize on instances of when they were together. There were many plans to execute Hitler leading up to the 20th of July. Unfortunately, due to circumstance like in December, 1943, when Captain von dem Bussche, a member of the assassination group, planned to kill Hitler with a suicide bomb. The plan was to have a grenade on...

The medical records prove Laura’s multiple visits to the doctors, in which she expressed concern and fear that she had been infected with mold. Mrs. Michalik was confident that the cause of Lloyd Johnson’s death was not her daughter, but an old injury that never completely healed. Lloyd Johnson had hurt himself during a boating accident and a “piece of wood canoe paddle became lodged near his rectum” (Valkyrie). Since he was a diabetic, the wound was slow to heal, but it had eventually healed over completely up until two years ago. According to Michalik, her daughter was instructed by the hospital to take care of her husband’s wound. Laura was given permission to perform medical procedures on Lloyd; this explained the blood covered surgical supplies found around the house. The night before Lloyd was rushed to the hospital, Laura was tending to his wound, but both of them soon fell asleep. Laura woke up to a frantic Lloyd who was barely conscious and had trouble breathing. Also, his wound was bleeding excessively and Laura did not know what to do. “I was alarmed and shocked at what had come out of my husband and I scooped it up and......
